Aki and I have been discussing this a lot lately.
-
Some games released have similar art and concepts, FREAK OUT THINKING A MEDIUM IS DEAD.

@Orta: I'm really tired of 'shooters'. Platafformers should be the 'latest fashion'; the new black; the hit and the 'big thing' again.
-
I remember a time when I specifically said that the market was getting way too crowded with first person shooters(which looked and played alike) and I almost had my gaming credentials revoked for it.
Now who's laughing, motherf*****s?

16 bit - 2D Platformers
32 bit - Japanese RPGs
Last gen - 3D action/adventure
Current Gen - FPS
Every generation had that one genre that gets a bit overdone.
-
I don't really get it. Why does everyone live to whine about gaming industry and not just sit back and BUY games you enjoy. If people like playing the same old Mario game, FPS adventure. Good.
Why are we going to sit on our high horse and say "NO MORE CALL OF DUTY FOR YOU CHILD!"
-
This gen barely has games I enjoy. This gen barely has enjoyable games.
-
Maybe you are growing out of gaming. I think gamers now judge games way too quickly and think they hate them cuz of the internet. Seriously, as a kid I would just buy or rent a game due to the cover. Now everyone has to check a score or a opinion on the interwebs.
Pen & Teller is doing a episode on Martial Arts next week. Fuck. Now that is bullshit.
-
Actually, I don't have that problem. It's cool to have an opinion. I don't ride the internet bullshit.

The site from which I order games for cheap only has a list with the names of the games. I've bought games only because of their cool name, without even knowing what the fuck it was.
I like to try new things, so I don't care about Internet reviews. Ever.
I'm happy.

That sounds like fun. What games have you bought based on name alone?
-
Talking about games bought based on 'cover', I got Overlord 2. Just cuz it reminded me of 60's -80's horror comedy. Think Gremlins etc.

Well, Mass Destruction will arrive tomorrow.
Then there's Xmen mutant academy, Omega Boost, Starfighter 3000 (which didn't work very well on my Saturn :c), Die Hard Trilogy, Turbo Outrun (I did not know what it was back then), NBA Hangtime, Super Wrestlemania, Castlevania (for the N64, I did not knew how it was I had never played castlevania before), UEFA Striker, Sega Extreme Sports, Virtua Athlete 2k..
These are the ones I still have here.. There are more that I eventually got rid of.

I do not agree with this generation being mostly about FPS. The original Xbox had way more FPSs than the Xbox 360 does, which I would say is mostly made up of RPGs or general action games.
I guess it varies from console to console. Most people would say the 16 bit gen was mostly made up of platformers, but I would separate Genesis as more of an arcade platform and the Super Nintendo as more of an adventure or RPG kind of platform, the TurboGrafx-16 barely had any platformers to boot either - it was mostly shmups. For a good two years or so, the PlayStation 3 had twice as many FPSs as the Xbox 360 did, not sure why not many people ever really took notice of this.
3rd person action games are the ones I think are really taking over this gen. How many big FPSs can you think of outside of Halo, Call of Duty and maaaaaybe something like FEAR? Not too much that really does well or gets noticed.
But when you think 3rd person action games, you got everything from Uncharted to Gears of War to Dead Rising. I would say something like the Ratchet & Clank games are less platformers and closer to this now too.
-
You think the 360 is made up mostly of RPGs?
I don't think this generation is much 'FPS' anymore, just that FPS games are rising to popularity due to its online modes. This year is getting a TON of racing games, probably more so than FPS games.
Blur, GT5, Need for Speed, Split/Second, Mod Nation Racers, SEGA All-Stars Racing and a few others I missed. I think people aren't seeing the big picture and just take 2 or 3 games out of a period of 3 years and say "This is what is bad for gaming."

It's true. There is so much variety now on every platform, I don't see how anyone who seriously looks for a game they like can be 'tired of' a genre or feel that theres nothing for them.

What about my fast paced arcade first person shooters?
On the PS3 I have Unreal Tournament 3, but I already played it.. so.. I don't know if there's another one as awesome, mindless and fast-paced.

Aren't they porting Quake Live to Xbox LiVE? I know, its not helping you, maybe it will get a PSN release.

Thats a very specific genre though... hmmm. George pointed out Quake 3 might be getting a release, apart from that you might be onto something.
-
There was always a lack of that type of game. Really, outside two series of games, its pretty much 'dead'.
also, you can play Quake here free: www.quakelive.com (http://www.quakelive.com)
-
Bulletstorm sounds right up your alley.
-
Quake Live is a poor man's version of Quake III Arena, which still plays fine online..
But you see how in such a crowded genre there's a spot that isn't greatly covered?
What about fun FPS like Duke Nukem, Serious Sam, Soldier of Fortune? Where are they this gen? Duke is a joke, Serious Sam is receiving lukewarm ports of older versions (and I still don't get the great great SS2 anywhere but the original Xbox), the SoF on the PS3 was panned by the critics and not well received overall..not as fun as the original.
The problem isn't that there are many FPS. The problem is that they mostly cater to a single market (war-based tactical team co-op) bar the small dose of the other market (ambient-based story driven shooters, like Bioshock and F.E.A.R).
Have to check out Bulletstorm.
-
What about The Darkness for a fun FPS? I found it fun and it didn't have stuff like limited weapons or aiming down the sights etc. I really liked that game anyway, not everyone did though.
Ditto Prey, which wasn't great, but was still pretty fun with it's basic gameplay and some nifty stuff like Spirit Walking.
-
I played The Darkness once. I hated it, but can't quite remember why..
Prey was awesome. Too bad it's not on the PS3.
-
You liked Prey better than The Darkness? Wow. You and I are very different people.
Did you at least get to the part where you get the power in The Darkness? Early on it's just guns, but it picks up a lot when you can rip people's faces off and eat their hearts from the other side of the room.
-
The game wasn't mine. I remember having these black tentacle demon things in me that could attack people, if that's what you're talking about lol
-
There was a bunch of stuff you could do. You could skewer/throw people around at close range with tentacles, call in demons to fight alongside you (They would like, hacksaw people's heads off and stuff), send out a tentacle to explore small areas and stealth kill people, create black holes, use Darkness Guns. Sounds like you missed out on quite a lot of it. I would reccommend trying it again sometime if you get a chance to play it, you might enjoy it!
-
Solider of Fortune games are not that great.
But, Bulletstorm, like said before, might be up your alley. Its by the studio that did Painkiller, if you have not played that. Check it.
-
I am really surprised MadeMang did not like Prey and liked The Darkness, the only console FPS with worse controls than The Darkness is Perfect Dark Zero, and that says a lot.
Did you ever play Black on the PlayStation 2 or Xbox? It was made by Criterion (Burnout people) and has gameplay based around explosions and ricocheting bullets, single player only though. There is a sequel in the works called Bodycount coming out pretty soon too.
Maybe not exactly what you were looking for, but I would keep an eye on Brink if I were you. The controls, concepts and art especially seem outstanding, but it might be a bit too ambitious.
Also, for cheap I would highly highly recommend TimeSplitters 2 and TimeSplitters Future Perfect on last gen consoles. I am certain you would like these games a lot.

Eh? Do you mean you were surprised I DID like them? I didn't like Prey THAT much but it was fun for what it was. It was also probably the third game I had on 360, so didn't have much to compare it to apart from PDZ, which I pretty much hated.
But as for Darkness having bad controls, Double Eh? Really? I never had a problem with it at all, and found the game to be lots of fun. I had a blast wreaking havoc with darkness powers, wrecking everyone's shit with black holes and throwing cars at them with demonic tentacles from hell.
The Powerdrill scene is one of the coolest and best done cutscenes I've ever seen in a game too.

ok ok fluffy, here's something else: I did not sleep today. It's 8AM and I can't stop thinking about stuff.
I don't mind game discussion, I just don't think it should dominate a thread in a section that's supposed to be for "everything else". ^^;;; This has turned into like the "Random Hotel" of video game discussion in here.
-
I guy named Kogen in VF5 lol
I don't get why I need a different profile for each character. Or am I not getting it?
-
You make a profile for each one so you can carry over the items you win through different game modes.
-
But are the items exclusive to the characters who win them?
-
But are the items exclusive to the characters who win them?
Yeah. Each profile you make is character and award specific.
It is really not that hard to collect a very large amount of items you will want to use with your characters. You will have tons before you know it.
-
I don't remember this thread being here lol
Just tried out UMK3 on the Saturn. Nice stuff.
