I’ve been diving into a lot of indie games, and I can’t help but notice how many of them capture that classic SEGA energy — fast-paced gameplay, vibrant colors, catchy soundtracks, and that “just one more try” feeling.
Back in the day, SEGA games had a special kind of charm. Titles like OutRun, Sonic the Hedgehog, Jet Set Radio, and Crazy Taxi didn’t just rely on graphics — they were all about gameplay rhythm and personality. They had soul, speed, and a certain “arcade confidence” that’s hard to find in modern AAA titles.
What’s interesting is how indie developers are bringing that same feeling back, in their own way. Games like Freedom Planet, Pizza Tower, Hotshot Racing, and A Space for the Unbound show that it’s still possible to combine old-school design with fresh modern ideas. These games don’t just copy SEGA, they understand what made those classics great.
I’d love to hear what other people think, which recent indie games remind you of SEGA’s golden era?
Are there any Speed Stars (https://speedstarsgame.io) hidden gems that truly capture that old-school speed, challenge, or sense of fun?
Personally, I think we’re living in a small “retro revival” right now. Indie devs seem to care more about gameplay than spectacle, and it feels great to see new games that could easily sit next to SEGA classics from the ‘90s and early 2000s.
What’s your pick for a modern indie game that feels like something SEGA could’ve made back in the day?
