Title: Vanquish Website Update:[New Footage, Characters, DLC, etc.]
Post by: Pao on July 08, 2010, 02:03:16 am
http://http://vanquish.sega.jp/

The website's been renew'd with new info and footage, the footage shows awesome (although short) gameplay:
[youtube:7jw3rdgo]0DAdGb_Uj_Q[/youtube:7jw3rdgo]
(^After watching this, I really cannot see how people still call it a gears clone)

PlatinumGames also announced some DLC plans for the game, and an event for playing Vanquish just like the "feel bayonetta event" last year:

Quote
Sega shared a final release date of October 21 for Vanquish today. The Xbox 360 an PS3 multiplatform shooter from Platinum Games and Shinji Mikami will be priced 7,980 yen.

Joining the date announcement, Sega shared some of its promotional plans for the game.

Those who pre-order will get a download code for the Vanquish Limited Weapon Pack. This pack includes three weapons: Boost Machine Gun, Laser Canon and Anti Armor Pistol.

Confirming that Vanquish will have paid download content in the future, Sega also said that these three items will be released as paid download content following release. The company did not provide price and release timing.

Gamers will get a an early chance at trying Vanquish via a demo event. The event, titled "code:VANQUISH 0807" will be held at Tabloid in Tokyo's Shibaura area on August 7. Sega will choose 200 participants for the event via drawing. Visit the Vanquish official site to put your name down

At the website, new characters were introduced under the character tab, one of them is called Professor Francois, who apparently belongs to DARPA (why do I get an Otacon vibe from this guy?)

The other is Elena Ivanova  (She really looks like a grown-up Olivia from Godhand... Just like how sam looks like an Old gene)

At last, but not least, the official (Japanese) blog and twitter of Vanquish are now running:

Loving it! I'm starting to get that Resident Evil vibe in the character art.

The look of the characters are my favorite part of the game so far. They also really remind me of Metal Gear characters too for some reason.

I really really hate pre-order only DLC, so I am glad that late adapters can still be able to pick up what they missed out on. I wonder if we will get any DLC for new levels or features and not just weapons though?

Pao, how much have you played Gears of War games? Everything in that video was extremely similar to stuff found in the games outside of bullet time.

Guns have gotta be the lamest DLC out there. I prefer environments and new characters.

Also, this dude looks like an actor but I can't place who I think he looks like:

Enough to tell me Vanquish is no where near a clone.
I don't slide at extreme speeds jump around kicking exploding robots then activate slo-mo in the middle of the air while I finish the last guy off in gears.
The pacing and the way the action unfolds is just different.

I spent most of my time in Gears behind cover (not saying Gears is not good or anything, its just different)

Vanquish encourages you to go out of cover and dash towards the enemy, at the stats screen in the end of the level, you will get penalized for how much time you spent behind cover, or so I heard.

I can't stand the whole extra content monopoly that Gamestop/EB games has.  The only times I've ever pre-ordered games from them, it's been for the extra content (Yakuza 3), or because it was a more obscure game that I didn't think would show up in local stores (Sakura Wars), and every time the game ends up showing up like 2 weeks late.
I'd rather pay the extra cash for DLC than set foot in Gamestop again.

Agreed! I swear, last time I was at a GameStop, I had to say no to about 5 offers. I don't want a preorder, I don't want a membership, I'm SURE I don't want one, I don't want a magazine, I don't want a protection plan and I'm triply sure I don't want a membership. Their upselling is worse than Suncoast.

It's Gears of War meets Wet. Could be fun. The Wet part anyway. I really want a demo.

One of the best known tactics for moving around in Gears' is sliding into cover, you do not kick, but there are attacks that are very similar and work in a similar fashion.

Did you see any of the bosses in the games or any of the level gimmicks? Did you play multiplayer modes in either Gears of War at all? You would not last long at all in it if you hide in cover for a few seconds, most of the people just flank you, throw out smoke grenades and hit you with a shotgun from behind. Literally the only thing different with Vanquish's pacing from every video I have seen is that there is 'bullet time'. Watch some high rated multiplayer matches on YouTube to see what I mean.

I'm always surprised to hear how bad places like this are for most people. I buy all my games from EB, and I wouldn't have it any other way. They always have the best pre-order bonuses (be it limited editions, DLC or whatever), their games are never late (They even call a few days before to remind you a game is coming, or in some cases to tell you about midnight launches) and the staff is almost always really nice, knowledgable and helpful. Last time I went in when they had a massive sale and bought the Fallout 3 Expansions I ended up chatting to the guy behind the counter about the old Fallout games and New Vegas. He brought up the Special Edition, and I was expecting him to ask if I wanted to pre-order, but he didn't, he was just telling me how cool it looked and that he was looking forward to the game.

Anyway... as for Vanquish. I think it does look fun, but also it does look a bit like Gears of War with Bullet time every time you get out of cover. I'll need to play it and see. After all, I thought I wouldn't like Bayonetta that much until I played the full game, now I love it.

I like the workers near my Gamestop . They are laid back and funny. Of course, they are forced to asked about gamestop card shit edge and if I want something for pre-order. It is store policy, I have no issue with saying 'no'.

Vanquish is to Gears of War to what Gears of War was to Kill Switch. Evolution.

Maybe it's just the EB Games stores I've been to. Either way, I'd rather avoid any of the Gamestop stores that I've visited so far in my life.

As far as the whole Wet thing goes, it's one aspect that I'm really looking forward to. I spent the majority of the time doing that slide in Wet, and can't wait to do it in this game too. It just looks so cool.

Less gameplay features, items, abilities, styles of play, even animations and characters somehow equals evolution? Bullet time is not that big of a deal, sorry.

I am not calling Vanquish a ripoff, but it is obvious almost all of the inspiration came from it. At one point the original Gears even had cigarettes set up for use the same way, come on.

I did not touch the Multiplayer, but I spent all my time on the SP, and yes, compared to how Vanquish was played, Gears was far more Cover based, I do get it out of Cover from time to time, but that's not what the game encourages, you are not supposed to tear inside enemy line and get between them.

And also, I understand that in theory, the sprint is similar to the Boost in Vanquish (even though The Boost is significantly faster and more intuitive from what we've seen) However, you do understand that the "Slo-mo" is a main part of the gameplay? You're saying it like if it was a minor feature "Except for the Slo-mo, it looks exactly like Gears"
That's just like saying Max Payne looks like a generic TPS, except for the bullet time.
The Bullet Time in Vanquish is as important as the Witch Time in Bayonetta, its a gameplay pillar, and another thing that makes this game different than Gears, combined with The boost and melee, you can make amazing combos like what we've seen in the last video.

I honestly can't see how someone can claim this is a Gears clone when you do batshit insane moves like the video with completely different pacing. The Developers want you to play it as an action game, rather than a cover shooter...

Err... I'm sorry but what?! I can understand what you mean by "features", lets just say that's the lack of the Multiplayer... but Items? Abilities? Style of Play? Animations and Characters? Really? I'm pretty sure no one played the full game to know how these lack in comparison to Gears... and Bullet Time IS a big deal, its one of the main pillars of gameplay, its something as important as the bullet time in Max Payne, even the developers said you wouldn't survive some boss fights without the bullet time.

Multiplayer sucks in Gears. Saying that the game has 'less items' than Gears is also incorrect.

Gears of War is boring and this seems to take the aspects that bored me and 'fix them'. The levels we have seen are already better designed than Gears and the pacing is better. No longer must you sit in cover every time you move up. Now its more frantic pace, something that Gears could have used.

Again, no one has played it yet. No need to freak out and defend precious Gears of War.

Gears of War is boring

Yeah, well thats just like, your opinion, man. (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsogswrH6ck)
Although I agree that the Multiplayer is sucky ('cept horde and co-op which is brill).

I think it's early to say whether Gears or Vanquish will be better than eachother, but they certainly look different enough now to me. At first I thought it was really similar, but it seems like theres more emphasis on bullet time stuff than 'stop and pop' gameplay. I'm curious as to why they even have cover at all if you're spending most of your time in the open and in slow motion though.

I'm still not won over by the videos or anything, but I have hope it'll be good. I'll need to play it first to really get an idea of if I'll like it or not. How you can use and match the moves and all that jazz will be important.

I'm not saying Gears is not good, on the contrary its a great game and one of the most influential titles out there, even PG admitted they took inspiration from it. (Along with CoD)

My overall point is; Vanquish is not a clone of Gears of War, is it worse or better? I do not know, but its clearly not a clone to me.

Clearly taking a mechanic from another game does not make it a clone. That is silly and only an idiot would assume that.

Well in the multiplayer of Gears games almost everyone uses just shotguns and runs in behind everyone fast. To me this is extremely similar to what I have seen of Vanquish. It is actually what me and a few friends think hurts Gears most in multiplayer, so I am really cautious of it in here.

What I meant was that you can actually slide in the Gears games. When you are like 3-5 feet towards cover and just tap the A button (not hold it to run) you slide into that cover. Something high level players do from what I have seen is slide into one, but move the analog stick in the opposite direction for a split second, then do the same to another wall near it making the character move much, much faster than the normal holding A running. Obviously Vanquish does it differently, but the execution is very similar.

With bullet time, the way I see it is just slowing down time to aim better, but if it actually effects the way bullets travel or how the levels react like in Viewtiful Joe, then I will agree with you for this.

My response to George was mostly trying to make him seem like an idiot how his point of it being an 'evolution' is because he likes it better.

By items I mean maybe not within the first game, but in the second there are all kinds of things you can use and pick up, different scenes for vehicles and stuff too. I know we have not seen the full game yet, but for Gears outside of the handguns you have all different kinds of uses for each weapon in the game, stuff like the chainsaw on the assault rifle is now iconic to videogames now.

Abilities and styles of play kind of are the same thing in that you need to use different kinds of techniques to beat your enemies. In Vanquish we already know you have to always run out to fight everyone, but with Gears, especially in the second one you are always doing different kinds of stuff.

Animations is something I thought we all knew was obvious. Even Sharky said the animations at some points were kind of lame. I mean, Sam does not even move his arms to change his weapons. It looks cool, but it is obviously done to keep the animation budget down.

For characters, I did not mean this to be related to story if that is what you thought, because as we all know it would not be too hard to beat Gears in this, but we already know you only fight different kinds of robots in Vanquish, in Gears there is such a crazy amount of variety in 2 and 3 looks to have so much to the point it is a bit silly almost.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am thinking I left the wrong impression. I did not really point out all of these as to what I thought made Gears of War 'better', but what I think makes them similar and to what I feel is going to be obvious to most people when thinking if they want to buy Vanquish or Gears of War.

Unlike George, who just went off on some kind of opinionated whinefest, I am pointing out things that are real. If I made a mistake on judging the bullet time wrong then I am sorry about that, but otherwise this seems like a very similar game in a lot of aspects, and that worries me as I do not really like the multiplayer of Gears too much at all.

If I were to bring up my actual opinion I would say stuff like I am worried the map system might hurt exploration and make most cover completely pointless. I am also worried that most enemies seem to have to take way too much damage to take down. I do however like how Vanquish will probably be longer, how it seems more point based and have faith Platinum can just make a really fun game, but I am pointing out my worries and things I feel most people will look at when wondering if they should purchase the title.

Indeed it does it like Viewtiful Joe, in Vanquish, you can actually shoot down enemy bullets when in slo-mo...You can see the shape of the bullets whizzing past you... You can see much of it if you download the 6 minutes HD gameplay from Gamersyde.

EDIT: You can also see it in the video on the first page here, if you concentrate you can spot bullets flying, Matrix style.

There are many weapons in Vanquish, including different types of Grenades too that opens way to combos (Throwing EMP Grenades, kick the robots and shoot them in the air)
Like I said, when talking about Items and Characters, I'm not saying Gears lacks that, I'm saying we haven't played Vanquish so we don't really know whats in there for us.

That is not true, in Vanquish there are many ways to dispatch your enemies besides running over them, you can play it like a cover shooter, or become a combo whore and juggle your enemies in the air, etc... I do not see how Gears offer more variety in how you play it, Vanquish got the boosting, bullet time, melee, those can be combined together to create combos like in the video...it opens many possibilities for play style, I really do not see how Gears have better ones.

The Animations is one of the best things I liked about this game, it looks awesome, but again, it have more variety than Gears, at least from what I've seen...
Quote
It looks like each weapon got a certain melee attack assigned to it.

From what I've seen:
http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvVer30n1UY

Assault Rifle: Punches 0:59
Sniper Rifle: Roundhouse kick 2:06
Shotgun: Strong Punch 1:00
Heavy Machine Gun: Launching kick  4:23
As you can see, It looks like each weapon got a certain melee attack assigned to it, and since this game apparently going to have plenty of weapons, I'd say the Animators are not really holding back with those moves sam does.

Heck there is even 3 animations for crawling, and for the Cover system, you can take cover over short barriers by lying down... thats something not even in Gears.

I do not mind people calling Vanquish similar to Gears, in fact, it IS similar, but my argument is that there is difference between "similar" and "clone"... Vanquish got other stuff to differentiate it from Gears, its different but similar. Since they share a lot of Main Aspects.

I do not think that is fair to compare an entire game to just one part of another. Multiplayer is probably the largest part of Gears of War games, just for the second game including DLC there are a total of 30 very large levels with different kinds of gimmicks and designs for each not to mention over 10 kinds of very different playing modes of play and customizable options to boot, this is a lot to ignore.

Yeah, then that is different.

A big thing about this is that I think with most people who buy these kinds of games are interested in playing with their friends or with people over the world. It would be impossible to add a feature like that in a multiplayer game without it turning into a really frustrating event for everyone not using it, so I can understand why they do not have it. This is most likely going to be the main criticism of Vanquish, and a big issue that will help it not sell too well, especially if it is going to have to go up against major releases like the new Halo or Call of Duty games...

I do not think I was the one to coin the phrase of Vanquish as a Gears clone, but I do not really think that, I just think it does not have many interesting to separate it from the crowds. Not saying it will suck, but I do not see how this is going to wow people as much as any of Platinum or Clover's other console games have and am pretty sure it will fall into obscurity fairly fast. I was also pretty frustrated when George said this was an 'evolution' of Gears when that is an offense to both of the titles in question.

PM or IM me if you want to discuss the rest of what was brought up.

Animations is something I thought we all knew was obvious. Even Sharky said the animations at some points were kind of lame. I mean, Sam does not even move his arms to change his weapons. It looks cool, but it is obviously done to keep the animation budget down.
While I do think that the game has some stiff animations, I was talking about one video where the character model turns oddly.

The gun changing is a poor example because I would argue its actually much better and has more animations. I think programing one gun to turn into another has more animations then that simple 'grabing another gun' animation you see in most shooters.

Which I actually hate because more often then not they don't animate the grabbing of the gun properly and often the gun even pops out of nowhere and appears in their hand because the character model isnt carrying it.

Vanquish's gun morphing system means he can hold multiple guns and can get rid of that ugly 'grabbing gun out of thin air' animation I see far to often.

I very much approve of the gun morphing.

In Gears of War 2 (might not be in the first one, I cannot remember) they all wear their weapons on them, so you can see them at all times. You can even place them differently on your body which is pretty cool too. For a multiplayer game I think this is almost necessary now (lots of games do it now, like Uncharted 2 and everything Halo after 2), but for a single player game like Vanquish it does not bug me at all.

I think the argument of "This different way is better because some people do the other terribly" is kind of weird. As far as I know, all of the Ratchet & Clank games have that kind of gun morphing, and last I checked those were not really advanced.

How many guns can you carry in Gears of War 2... I suspect its a low number. It would look bloody stupid to have a bunch of guns hanging off your character. And I just watched some gameplay the gun switching animation still looks very disjointed. He kind of reaches back and suddenly its off of his back and in the correct position in his hands... It'll never look as smooth as Vanquishs gun morphing animation.

The gun morphing is simply a far better way to handle the gun switching if you are playing a game where you can hold multiple guns at once. It doesn't look wonkey or odd.

You can carry five weapons at any time, one place is set for heavy weapons though. This makes sense in the more 'realistic' design they wanted for that series.

I am not going to argue your opinion, though - Especially when you are not really naming anything and just saying it is better. My opinion is that I think it was a lazy way to change your weapon without having to change the character's animation.

...But the gun morphing animation for every individual weapon is far more complex then the gears characters simply moving their arm back and forth in a disjointed way.

I can't see how something that clearly took more animation frames to do is lazy... It just looks better too.

Mikami answers fans questions:

Quote from: Clumsyorchid;30583
Hey all, I'm not dead, and more importantly, I have Q&A answers from Mikami-san on Vanquish!

Sooo, before we kick off, there was a delay, maybe you noticed.  It was due to some crossed wires and a mix up at E3 where we didn't get to sit down with Mikami-san.  After the show, we got the questions out and I'm happy to present them to everyone here! Questions are noted from the original authors and Mikami-san's responses are in blue.

Thanks for your patience on this and enjoy the Q&A!

Rikitatsu
What was the inspiration behind the style and setting of VANQUISH?
We based things on the Japanese animated series, Casshern. As far as the game goes, we really put an emphasis on speed during the gameplay.

How Important will the Melee combat be in the game? and how many melee moves are there?
We haven’t made melee the focal point of combat in the game, but it is an effective technique when you close in on an enemy. The focal point of combat in the game is shooting, so the melee attacks are really just to add to the combat repertoire.

Do you think VANQUISH will be able to successfully compete with other shooters on the market without Multiplayer?
Of course, the lack of multiplayer will probably make things difficult on the sales front, but what we have instead is the speedy exhilaration of Vanquish’s gameplay, along with the content you can really sink your teeth into. I think it will provide more than enough enjoyment for those who buy the game.

Darkking27
What was your inspiration to make this into a third person shooter and not first person?
I wanted people to really feel the action going on during the game, which means that we needed to show the player on the screen.

.
Casual   9amera
Will we'll see any characters from your previous titles making an guest appearance?
            Nope.

  Sonic THP

Do you think Vanquish represents a sort of attempt at making a very traditionally "western" genre and infusing it with a style that is centric to Japanese video games?
If that is how people take the game, I am totally fine with that.

  IR A IP T O IR
Will it be different color swaps for the suit? I want a black one!!
At first, we thought it would be fun to have a black version of the main character included in special edition. During production though, this plan fell by the wayside, but you are right, a black version of Sam would be really cool.

Will the Achievements / Trophies be difficult to obtain?
We arent making them insanely difficult, but you are going to have to challenge yourself to earn them.

Phoenix
-What is your favorite aspect of Vanquish?
I really love the boost system in the game, as well as the English voice for our main character, Sam. It is incredibly cool, and I’m hooked on it.

-Is aiming of the guns smooth and precise despite the speed and hectic atmosphere of the game?
We have tuned things so that the guns in the game are easy to aim, and that aiming is smooth.

ViewtifuljoeX
-How serious is the story going to be?
Basically, it is a serious story, becoming a bit dark at the end.

Shinji Mikami (From the Forums :))
-Can Shinji Mikami shed some light on some hidden parts of the game that make it special and different?
The staff decided to screw with me a little bit by hiding some rhinoceros beetles in the game. They did this without me knowing, so definitely be on the lookout for them in the game.

Phantasos
-Will be bosses be solely "Shoot and Dodge" or will there be pseudo puzzle challenges like environmental hazards?
The bosses are a bit old-school, in that there is a distinct process for defeating them, kind of like exposing their weak points and then firing upon them.

Facebook.com/Sega

Dan B.
Did you go to a gaming art school or a regular university?
I went to a normal university, Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan. I didnt really study, but I was somehow able to graduate.

Brian O’C.
-What was the inspiration for the visual style?
The backgrounds are influenced by a movie called Tristan + Isolde. In the end, the visuals are really the product of the individual tastes of the staff creating them, but I think the graphics in the game are something we can be proud to recommend to people.

James M.
Who will be composing the soundtrack for the game?
The soundtrack was mainly composed by our in-house composers; however, ex-Grasshopper Manufacture composer Masafumi Takada was also in on composing some tracks.

Tom A
-He never seems to stick with one game style for his projects, often doing something very different with each game genre he tackles. I'd like to ask why he chose the third-person shooter genre this time?
It isn’t really a question of why. There was a reason the game had to be a third-person shooter. To create a shooter with strong action elements, I felt the only way to pull things off was with the third person perspective.

Henry
-What is the main difference between an Occidental shooter and a Oriental shooter design fundamentals that makes the difference at all
The short answer is Realism. From the graphics, to the worlds, games created in the West tend to want to simulate reality at a very high level. On the other hand, there tends to be a great number of Japanese games going for distinctive styles of expression.

New blog about the voice actor of Sam:

Quote
Voice and Voice Acting
Hello everyone, time for my second blog.

I’m actually not even sure how many of these I have to write…

Anyways, I’ll give it my best shot.

In Vanquish, each territory will have all the voice played in the appropriate language in real-time, so when you are in battle with your enemies, you don’t need to worry about reading subtitles.

When I’m working through a Western game, even one I really enjoy, I don’t have that great a grasp on what is going on and has left me with some unpleasant experiences. (This mainly only happens with shooters though…)

I also wanted to share with you one of my favorite voices in the game. I’m really hooked on the English voice for our main character, Sam. He is voiced by an actor named Gideon Emery. He has an incredible smoldering quality to his voice that I find really cool. I hope you all get a chance to listen to his performance.

And don’t worry, we have Japanese voice in as well.

The game looks really really good... However I'm starting to get the feeling were going to be looking at a lot of grey tones and that's depressing.

That is also my biggest gripe with the game so far, most of the areas revealed are "same-y".
I do not want colorful lands with Rainbows or Unicorns, I just need some different color scheme, different lighting, etc...

I am not too worried about the level art, we had the same thing happen with Bayonetta, which certainly was no slacker in different styles once we could see the final product.

I think it's hilarious that Hillary Clinton is in this game.

Kinda like how Bayonetta is Sarah Palin. *shot*

It's from GTTV, but I ripped the Vanquish part and uploaded it on Youtube:

I'm sorry I hijacked the thread, I don't think it was worth creating a new one. Something I saw:

We also tuned the title so that if you play Vanquish on the PS3 or the Xbox 360 you should notice little to no differences. Even the developers on the Vanquish team have a hard time telling the two versions apart at a glance… So no matter which console you have, you have nothing to worry about!

http://platinumgames.com/2010/08/26/pro ... -vanquish/ (http://platinumgames.com/2010/08/26/programming-the-engine-behind-vanquish/)

What does this mean? Both versions are being developed in-house? Or Platinum actually had multiplatform in mind this time?

Yes, both versions of Vanquish are developed by Platinum, and the primary reference platform this time is the PS3.

Off-Topic: however , the much despised version of Bayonetta for PS3, was not directly converted by SEGA but instead by NEX Entertainment, the developer of Shining Tears/Wind.
