Title: Virtua Tennis 4 (complete with Move and 3D)
Post by: Orta on August 17, 2010, 11:55:48 am
Just spotted by Kotaku on a demo kiosk right before Sony's gamescom press conference.

Heh?

EDIT: It's actually called Virtua Tennis 4 and has Move and 3D support. Cool. Can we have decent models for the female players now?

Maybe some demo footage will leak to the net. This is exciting.

The return of AM3!

What game did they make after Virtua Tennis 3 anyway?

We don't know that yet. I sure hope they learned something from Sumo and don't bring the damn dives back.

I don't really get why its only exclusive for PS3. But at least that means its probably taking advantage of it.

They never used the word exclusive, so it might not be.

At the same time I would not be shocked because this series has always done best on the platform, for whatever reason.

I have my fingers crossed for a 360 version. And before I hear "baw the 360 fanboy wants his games!" let me state that I am ALWAYS hoping for SEGA games to reach as many platforms as possible. 360 games on the PS3 and vice versa. ;)

Not sure if motion controls suit the franchise. It makes sense, sure, but to me VT has always been lounging on the couch and playing the smoothest controller-based tennis game ever. VT1&2 are awesome.

The title is rather funny, as shouldn't this be the fifth game? But I guess the titles have been all over the freakin' place:

Power Smash/Virtua Tennis
Power Smash/Virtua Tennis2/Tennis 2k2
Sega Professional Tennis: Power Smash 3/Virtua Tennis 3
Virtua Tennis 2009
Virtua Tennis 4

Yeah, miracle dives are a staple of the series.

Also, PS3 exclusive? I hope not.

Orta meant the dives from Virtua Tennis 3. They were horrible.

VT2009 is an upgraded release of VT3 without them, also there was an original Virtua Tennis for the PSP. And before you say lolpsp... Well no, lolpsp indeed.

So was Superstars Tennis based off of the 3 engine or the 2009 engine? I never really played past 2. I think I demo'd 2009.

You've forgotten Virtua Tennis: World Tour in your list.

And no, Sumo Digital games don't count hence it was called 2009 and world tour instead of a numerical entry.

I am confident Sumo will eventually port this on the necessary systems.

Made the wiki page.

What!??

They just missed on the huge userbase of the X360.
Who makes these decisions?

Well, as Uranus said, they haven't used the word "exclusive" yet. This might just be a deal with the Move version being announced first, and then the 360 version casually announced after the show.

Or not.

Virtua Tennis has sold best on the Playstation 3 so far this generation and from the sounds of things sounds like a good coup on Sony's part.

Keep in mind Virtua Tennis strongest reigion is Europe and that happens to still be a strong Playstation 3 userbase with the exception of the United Kingdom (Even then, the PS3 version sold best their still)

In that sense, making this a Move exclusive and Sonic Riders a Natal exclusive makes sense.

There were far too many dives in VT 3. The player would dive so easily and often (at least with my play style) it wasn't even funny. VT 2009 (or rather VT 3.5) is definitely what VT 3 should have been.

Ana Ivanovic is in there, dammit! *dools*

AM1 + AM2 = AM3!

kidding. I'm actually really happy to see a Dreamcast era series get another title. It ain't no JSR or SC5, but it's something.

edit: holy crap! i forgot how awesome VT1&2's vmu animation was!

How Virtua Tennis 4 plays in Move motion controlled 3D
Quote
Sega offers a new perspective on the Virtua Tennis series for its next outing, a new title that touts two key PlayStation 3-specific features, stereoscopic 3D visuals and PlayStation Move motion controls. So, how's that work?

A lot like Wii Tennis, actually. Going hands-on with Virtua Tennis 4 for the PS3 at Gamescom today, I was surprised to see the game stripped down to Wii Tennis-like bones. Gameplay was purely Move-driven in the Gamescom demo. Matches started by flicking up the Move controller and swinging realistically at the tennis ball. There was no controlled movement around the court, an important consideration in Virtua Tennis games. There was simply swinging.

Serves and volleys were controlled by the angle and direction of the player's swing and, after a few losing rounds to a virtual Roger Federer, I started to grasp the intricacies of angling that swing. After losing handily to digital Federer, I came back in the second set, outlasting my opponent in fast volleys.

One aspect of Virtua Tennis 4 that took some getting used to was the switch from a third-person serve to a first-person swing, a disembodied translucent hand and racket representing the angle and rotation of the Move controller onscreen. It was slightly disorienting, as the camera panned toward that hand when the ball approached.

On the plus side, Virtua Tennis 4's controls felt accurate, the virtual racket mostly doing what my muscles were asking of it.

The game's 3D aspects didn't interfere with the gameplay, but they didn't add a whole lot either. It was a feature that I largely tuned out after powering on the 3D glasses, perhaps a good thing.

Clearly, Sega's latest arcade-style tennis game is still early and has plenty of room to improve. Virtua Tennis 4 will be ready to serve on the PlayStation 3 sometime in 2011.

Fast becoming disinterested...

Why no movment? and WHY would it go to a first person perspective... WHY.

I do not think I'll be purchasing this game if there is auto lock on movement, well I wasn't anyway since it was for the Move but I would not be too interested because of that, first person prespective is not really needed if you ask me.

I have my fingers crossed that this will turn out like Child of Eden, in which we initially thought it was a 360 Kinect exclusive and then later found out that it was multi-platform and that the motion controls were optional.

I am pretty sure all previous releases of Virtua Tennis that had additions like this let you choose what kind of controls you wanted. I cannot see this being first person only, either.

You should all stop being so nit-picky about this game. First Person view and motion controls are just like the Spin-Dash for Sonic 2.

Honestly you guys, such whiners.

That camera definitely needs some work.

I got to try out PSmove yesterday actually, I can safely say that the controls are very responsive at least, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Our brief hands-on with the title gave us the chance to take to the court in a match between Roger Federer and Andy Murray.

Walking onto the court--which appeared to at least for demo purposes be locked to clay and hardcourt surfaces--we looked around to admire our legions of adoring fans. The game’s 3D implementation looked reasonable with the net protruding from the foreground. Leaping straight into the action we spent our first game on the serving side, lobbing the ball into the air with a single wrist flick and using a quick downstroke to indicate we wanted it to rocket towards our opposition. Nothing in the basic service and returning mechanics should be foreign to anyone who has played Wii Sports previously. Faster wrist snaps from the peak of our arm arc put a bit more force into our serves, while an on-screen speed indicator gave us the chance to track how quickly we were getting it down the other end.

Our game included only the primary Move peripheral, with no Navigation (formerly called the Move Sub controller) attachment present. As a result, we didn’t manually move our character around the screen as we would with an analog stick, but the game did a good job of automatically shifting our character to keep us within striking distance without cramping our style. Returning the ball was as simple as swinging as you would in real life, though we noticed that while late swings were punished by usually missing the ball, early arm extensions were much more forgiving, getting it over the net, but missing the crucial power to make the other player really work for it.

Once we had nailed the timing, matches were slugged out from the baseline with neither player venturing towards the net. You will be able to get closer by simply taking steps towards the PlayStation Eye camera. Like previous games in the Virtua Tennis series, the action is from a third-person perspective, though in this title when you wind up for a shot, or attempt to return service, the game will drop into first-person mode with the racket becoming your only visible element as it hovers in midair.

Ironically, while the title represents a natural extension of the real-world abilities most people are likely to have experienced at some point in their life, the learning curve on returning balls felt a little bit steep. Advanced players will be able to add slice, backspin, and other tennis stroke mainstays simply by aiming in the intended direction and using the wrist movements associated with the shot

All of the gestures we used to play the game felt natural, though we are concerned about the potential to knock over household items around the lounge room or give doubles partners blackeyes with errant flailing. Virtua Tennis 4 is currently slated for a summer 2011 release.

Very good impressions from Eurogamer.

Quote from: "Eurogamer"
If you've never been convinced that 3D is going to change anything in gaming, Virtua Tennis 4 is proof to the contrary – the change in perspective from top-down tennis to player's-eye-view seems designed to show off the effect. Impressive as it is, though, I can't tell whether it helps you to actually play better; that judgement will have to be reserved for long-term play. And it's worth remembering that for the 98% of people who aren't even considering buying a 3D TV, it won't matter either way.

The Move integration is another matter. It changes everything, not only how you play the game, but how you'll want to play it. VT2009 felt like a half-step compared to this. Motion control is finally being applied in ways that work, and it's accurate enough now to be more than a novelty. It's a shame that such a lot of bad will has been built up around it in the gaming community, because it's got more potential for traditional games now than it's ever had.
