Oh, I didn't realize that this game wasn't a portable title.

Very cool, then. ^__^ Perhaps I'll give this game a try, since I missed out on PSO the first time around.

They could announce other platforms later on, right?
But I wonder, if they might be trying to not do the same mistake as in PSU, that is, releasing it for a console in the end of its life (PS2)?

bah, the trailer shows nothing :(

I reckon the reason they didnt name consoles yet is because they're probably still trying to work it out with MS (like the problems FF14 had) and dont want to just say PS3 yet for fear of fanboy warz

Congrats for the scoop!

I'm not so excited as everyone of you... they announce PSO2 after many years and then it's on PC?! C'mon... ARE THEY DRUNK?!

Microsofts and Sonys keynote are already over, so it won't be announced for those consoles now... let's hope hardly the game will also be out for consoles. PSO2 exclusive on PC would be a epic fail.

IF Microsoft lets it be, 360 too?

Very awesome! Thanks to Sharky for hitting me up on 360 chat to give me the news. Also cool to be referenced by 1up, joystiq and TSS. Everything is going to plan, muahaha!

Now to wish for a console release (360 and PS3). If all else fails, looks like I'll finally be using Boot Camp on my Mac.

Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!

Has PSU been successful on the 360? Also, how well connected are Windows games and 360 games in terms of cross-platform releases? These might be good indicators of whether it comes to consoles or not. Hell, with PS3 getting FF online, MS should partially fund a console release.

edit: Spong and scrawlfx cited SEGAbits! ripten did not and thus they are losers.

Doesn't a SEGA fan work at Spong? I always see his name pop up in big SEGA related articles. Mostly stuff we already posted before, though we also got it from a different source.

There are a couple of Xbox games that will let you play with their PC (read "Games for Windows") counterpart. How successful that is I have no idea. Of course, this would mean locking out other platforms.

SEGA japan abuses the 360 PSU servers.

They consider them SEGA west servers and don't touch them, and rarely give SEGA America anything to update them with.

360 site
http://xbox360.phantasystaruniverse.jp/home/ (http://xbox360.phantasystaruniverse.jp/home/)

PC/PS2 site
http://phantasystaruniverse.jp/home/ (http://phantasystaruniverse.jp/home/)

you can see which one gets more love from the sites alone

the only reason the 360 version is still open is because of the west.  otherwise it would closed.

According to EspioKaos in the PSUPedia forums, this is what says in the background text on the trailer:
Quote from: "EspioKaos"
http://www.g-heaven.net/topics/2010/09/100917c.html

From Shougai PSO, here's a list of all of the text scrolling across the background in the trailer.  First, phrases that relate to the game's new components:
* "Action" and "RPG" re-connected
* Increased variety of client orders
* Map functions changing in real time
* User-created story
* New interface for environmental interactions
* Global support
* Thorough racial balances
* Full-user participation events
* Seasonal changes
* New chat system
* New mail functions
* Drastic item synthesis overhaul
* Even wider variety of ways to raise your character
* New direction of event scenes
* Approach from NPCs (New approach maybe?)
* Silhouette changes by add-ons (Not too sure what they mean here.)
* New photon arts (This was partially obscured in the video, so may not be 100% accurate.)
* Community support content (Again, slightly obscured in the video.)
* Additional customizations when you create your character
* Category-based weapon training system (Slightly obscured.)
* Implementation of asynchronous communication
* New party system
* Consideration of enemy cooperation
* Limitless content
* New approach to the game client
* Implementation of a new "life work" (Partially obscured.)
* Daily surprises
* "Trump card" system
* Mutual interaction functionality for new and veteran users

And now for words and phrases that give hints at the world of the game:
* Awakening
* Sealed stone monument
* Pure Dark Falz (Partially obscured.)
* Apostles of _____ (Partially obscured.)
* Camp ship
* Arkz
* Why is darkness born?
* Why is the Great Light no longer here?
* A world in ruin

The SEGA forums have a PSO2 forum up now.

They said that it's only announced for Japan so far but they wanted a place for people to talk about it.. I don't buy it =P

I figure SEGA West will be announcing a release date soon, otherwise they wouldn't put up a forum for it.

I'm assuming you never played the two games. The style of PSU is quite different from PSO and has a different storyline. From what I've gathered, most fans who have played the two would prefer they go back to the PSO style and story, myself included. Our wines have been answered =]

But it's that type of RPG that I don't have the strenght to go back and do a second time.

The problem with PC is that I spent 8 hours a day on the computer, so it would hardly be relaxing to move from work iMac to home iMac. Would much prefer the couch and the big ol' tv. However, I have been looking into getting PC on my Mac if PSO2 remains PC only.

I'm hoping for the battle mode to make a return as well as lobby soccer. Oh, and SEGA themed mags.

Question: How much did PSO change after Version 2? I remember seeing cards and they followed it up with four episodes. It all got hard to follow.

Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution was one of the worst games Sonic Team ever made, and by today's standards that is a major achievement.

All Points Bulletin (that "GTA MMO") was just announced to begin preparations to close it down now. That game was only out for like, two months. What a disaster. The MMO scene is now completely different, especially when PSU came out they did not even need to worry about WoW (which came out around the same time), everything has changed since then with major release and minor ones. SEGA has the weight of the world coming against them with this title, so I am worried to think how this could turn out in the end.

PSO isn't a MMO it's an online action game. It's not like you can go around with 39 of your e-buddies and blow up stuff.

Barry, PSO didn't change much after version 2. Everything that came afterwards (Episodes 1, 2 and 4) were expansions. More areas, items, weapons and story lines. CARD Revolution was set 20 years after the events in PSO, personally I quite liked the game but ultimately it's a bit unbalanced when you're starting your deck (decks created in the "Hunters" side feel a lot weaker than decks from the "Arkz" in the first levels).

I'll honestly be surprised if it isn't announced for PS3

Japanese gamers don't seem like gaming PC's.. and well.. you see how SEGA Japan treats 360 PSU.. LOL, plus it wouldn't sell in Japan on the 360.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!

I think it will do well on 360, I hear that the 360 version of PSU had the most active players? I'm not sure if that is true.

What will most likely happen:
- PC/PS3 server
- 360 server

I think the reason will be that MS likes control over games and cross game chat wouldn't work with PC/PS3 gamers.

well, in the west 360 was most popoular

but in Japan, the PC/PS2 server was and still is far more active in terms of Japanese players.

there is no 360 PSU server for Japan, Japan is just lumped in with the west for 360 PSU.  SEGA japan really cares about it that much that they won't even separate the disgusting foreigners from the Pure Japanese players.  :afroman:

i really hope for PSO2 that SEGA Japan isn't going to abuse the west servers lol, i think thats the reason they didnt bother making 360 a Japan server, that way they could ignore the 360 version because it wasn't considered Japanese.

Does this mean this site would turn from a fansite to a news site over night. Actually this is off topic (how Nintendo news site is OK, cuz they have a console, but a SEGA news site is a fansite etc)

Man, I would love a new SEGA console. Fuck... don't give me hope or I won't be able to sleep at night.

That would be the worst business decision ever at this point.  I have a theory bubbling in my head as to why this is PC exclusive.  Sega doesn't have the resources or the time to make this game a AAA next gen HD title so they are developing it for the PC where the standards are lower and they can create something comfortably in between this generation and the last one.  just a thought.

In a perfect world though this would be coming for either 360 or PS3 (exclusively, doesn't matter which.  I say this because when a game is created for both consoles, the development is guaranteed to suffer some how.  It's always best to optimize a game for a single console.  They could port it later though.) and would be powered by the hedgehog engine.

I'm pretty sure the reason they havent announced consoles yet is because they're trying to get MS to agree to merged servers and it'll either be merged or nothing like FF14.
and if they announced it for ps3 now then 360 later there'd be fanboy bullshit about "lost exclusives" or if they announced it for PS3 and 360 and the 360 version got cancelled there'd be complaining too. they probably did right to just steer clear of that shitstorm for the time being. This awesome news doesnt need to be tainted with console warz crap

The core idea behind the original PSO was bridging the gaps between continents, and I think the mission of PSO2 should also be that as well as bridging the gap between platforms. PSO spanning PC/360/PS3 would be awesome. Though I'd gladly play it even if it was limited to each platform.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!
Post by: George on September 17, 2010, 11:36:42 am
I think there will be an issue with Microsoft's 360. The console has exclusive features that won't be supported on the PS3.

You will either have to make a server PS3 - PC or 360 - PC (Games Live)
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!

umh maybe i'm wrong but when SEGA closed the PC and PS3 servers it wasn't because "we need it to get ready for the 10th annyversary"? So i don't think it will be just for pc. (maybe, i hope lol)
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!
Post by: Happy Cat on September 17, 2010, 12:14:50 pm
I personally hope it stays PC exclusive =P So sick of fanboy wars.

but realistically speaking, I don't see it being PC/360.  SEGA Japan only cares about Japan.   If anything it would be PC/PS3.

Most likely though it will be on all 3 platforms.  Hopefully unified servers, but if Microsoft won't allow it then it will probably be PC/PS3 and 360 for the west.  Just like PSU was.

Edward@SEGA said on the SEGA forums that PSU on the 360 has a long life ahead of it.  Maybe that means PSO2 isn't coming to the 360.

I can't see SEGA ignoring the potential sales of a stronger 360 Phantasy Star fanbase. If anything, they could be keeping them hooked to PSU until late next year when PSO2 would presumably arrive. Then shift them to their new addiction.

Best opinion to take on all this is "we shall see", because at this point anything could happen... plus we won't know anything until 2011.

Back to arguing about Sonic 4! ;)

Yeah, that would be good too.
that's not going to stop sites from comparing the 360 and PS3 versions though.

I do not mind the camparing, I like to know that I'm buying a good version of the game.

Fuck about servers. How about this. Every fucking console/PC has their own server, PSO2 ID can be used on more than one console.

Say I play on PC, I can bring all my info, character, to the PSO2 game on 360 and then to PS3.

If they all can't play nice, at least allow this. No?
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!
Post by: Happy Cat on September 17, 2010, 01:19:25 pm
It won't work that way unless Microsoft would allow it to.

on PSU all your character data is tied to your XBOX Live gamertag.

If you are gonna do that then you might as well have unified servers.  They are both basically leading down to the one thing Microsoft won't allow.  Communication with non-proprietary servers.

Did you know Microsoft gets a nice chunk of the PSU monthly fee on 360 even though they don't run the servers? That's probably the main reason they don't want games sharing servers with other platforms.

I see XBOX 360 limiting a game like PSO2.  Microsoft hates free content updates, and PSO2 is gonna have tons of those if PSOBB is anything to go by.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!
Post by: George on September 17, 2010, 01:32:52 pm
Not really, all SEGA will have to do is make a copy of your same character and pull up data (what xp you have, weapons etc) and synch it with the other servers.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!
Post by: Happy Cat on September 17, 2010, 01:45:09 pm
I don't think it would be that easy... -.- lol
The 360 PSU servers don't use a SEGA ID because that would be considered communication with outside servers.

Everything on the 360 PSU servers is handled by XBOX Live and Microsoft.  Thats why to cancel your PSU subscription on 360 you have to call Microsoft.

on/off topic: I hated how you couldn't copy certain DC files, such as PSO saves. Back then it made sense I guess, but now I have the files stuck on the VMU. It's either keep it or delete it, no way to move it to another VMU.

I'd love the idea of using the same file between platforms with PSO2, though I'd bet copying of files would be an issue.

Now I only wish they found a way to transfer PSO saves to PSO2. :P

I dont think there's any technical reason why the servers cant be combined, FF11 and a few other games did it
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!
Post by: George on September 17, 2010, 02:34:26 pm
FFXI did, but Microsoft is not letting FF14. So, who knows. Policy changes?
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!
Post by: Happy Cat on September 17, 2010, 03:57:33 pm
I never said it wasn't technically possible.  Of course it's possible.  but only if Microsoft allows it... that is, if 360 is even being considered for PSO2 =P

I just think the whole idea of transferring characters between servers is well.. stupid =P

If they were going to do that then they might as well just have unified servers.  It's almost the same thing, except with George's idea you wouldn't be able to play with people on other platforms.

now if it was his idea, and it was setup like PSU is setup  PC/PS3   and the 360 on their own servers, then I could see that character transfer idea working...

but each SKU having their own server? -.- sounds like a waste.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!
Post by: George on September 17, 2010, 04:02:06 pm
Yeah, we should pay monthly if we want to play on 360. Sounds like the best way.

But you don't understand, if MS says know to unified server, it won't happen. I rather get the game on 360/PC (if PC can play with PS3) or PS3/360. If we can all play together, the better.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves, its a PC game only so far.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!
Post by: Happy Cat on September 17, 2010, 04:10:40 pm
If Microsoft says no then it's going to end up like PSU if it's coming out on all 3 platforms..   If it uses games for windows live that means PS3 version wouldn't be included and well.. SEGA japan isn't going to cut off their native japanese audience like that =P

but yeah =P we should really stop talking about this. Just going in circles.  Only announced platform so far is PC.

I made a "what if" comparison with sonic 4 about this game.

What if this game turns out having a lot of phantasy star universe features and kind of ending up looking more like a phantasy star universe HD instead of a sequal to pso.

Like how sonic 4 looks a lot like new modern games instead of sonic 3 and knuckles.

Now I don't want to bring the thread off topic but I just wondered what you guys would think if pso2 ended up like that. Would you like that?

Phantasy Star Universe wasnt a terrible game, it just launched badly with not enough content... Although there were some problems like samey dungeons.

Frankly Phantasy Star Portable 2 and PS:Zero tell me that they know what they are doing and since Sakai-san took over they have been doing nothing since improving.

Exactly, which is why i'm fully confident about pso2 meeting it's expectations.

I didn't say phantasy star universe is terrible, but I think people would hate pso2 if it were like psu. I mean why would you anounce a pso2 in the first place.

Why would you anounce a sonic 4 if your not making it a sonic 4.

With out turning this into a topic about SOnic 4.

I think they feel like they ARE making Sonic 4, by the end of all 3 or so chapters you are looking at a pretty big game focusing soully on 2D Sonic with pretty much all of the trimmings of the classic series.

Zones, checkered levels, badniks, robotnik the main enemy, special stages, no cheesey music, no talking, no other playable characters.

This is easily the closest too a classic Sonic game in many years dispite some of the 'short comings' some people feel it has. I liked Sonic 2 more then Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles but they are still classic Sonic games. If by the end of Sonic 4 I still like Sonic 2 the most it wont have changed much and it can still be a good game even if it isnt exactly what everyone wants.

if it takes a lot of the gameplay improvements from PSU to PSP2i then great. Dodge roll, first person aiming with guns and photon arts all make the game more fun. I also want to see "My Room" make an appearance. There really isnt much in PSO that PSP2 doesnt do better. all I want is red boxes and ?SPECIAL WEAPON

There is a LOT from PSU/PS:p2 that improved over PSO. I also loved features like Photon Arts, My Room, Dodge Roll, Shields and so on...

My main problem with PSU was lack of content and level design was really monotinous and boring which is very off putting.

I think the reason Phantasy Star Universe was put on Games on Demand on the Xbox 360 with the expansion pack being free is a bit of a clue that they are at least testing this market.

I would be very surprised if it is a PC exclusive, but we know nothing as to how the game will even look. It might be a PC/PSP game even.

I just got psp2 and the game is just brilliant. It's the first phantasy star universe style game that's actually good in every way. Literally everything from psp1 has been made 10x better or changed to something better.

It kind of changed my opinion on the whole psu style because the game proved that it can be done right. I'd love some of the good aspects to make way to pso2 like the controls, side rolling and all that stuff that has been mentioned.

I really wonder how their gonna handle this though, surely they wanna keep pso unique but at the same time up to date, I really wonder what theyre gonna make of it.

All I ask for in PSO2 is to have my cheese needle again!

Three way repeater with three shots per direction per fire. A three shot combo = 27 shots spread across the entire area. Each shot had a 50% chance of paralyzing. I fucking owned the game with that baby.

"No spread plz". I cannot count the amount of times I've seen that text bubble. I only used it offline, it was good for leveling. I can see them bringing it back albeit in a much weaker form (as it was since version 2 onwards I think).

Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!

I'm thoroughly convinced there won't be console versions of this.  Why wouldn't they have announced them as well as PC?  You can create as many crackpot theories as you want, but I think they'd have announced it.  I think they've enjoyed the flexibility they've had with the PC versions of PSO and PSU.  One platform that everyone should own, one billing system, no dealing with Microsoft or Sony, no custom crafting patches and updates and expansions for each system, and everyone can play together.

I'd love to boot it on my PS3 or 360 as much as the next guy, but I don't see it happening.

Also, they really needed) to release more info about the game.  They hit everyone with this huge announcement and have given us almost no details. I'm kind of hoping they're silent now until E3 as to not dilute the impact of the announcement.

Also, most people would prefer playing with a controller.

I don't think his point was that the game wouldn't be suited for consoles.  I think he meant more that logically, it's a good decision to keep this on PC from a development point of view.

Time to invest in a USB controller.  Recommendations?  It'd be super rad to get a DC adapter for your PC and use the classic dreamcast controller to play PSO2.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!
Post by: ezodagrom on September 26, 2010, 02:14:14 pm
In my opinion, the online PS series don't really have a place where they belong, their releases were always inconsistent.
PSO - Dreamcast
PSO ver.2 - Dreamcast, PC
PSO Ep 1&2 - Gamecube, XBox
PSO Ep 3 - Gamecube
PSO BB - PC
PSU - PC, PS2, XBox 360
PSU AotI - PC, PS2, XBox 360
Started on a SEGA console later with a PC port (I think that PC version was only released in Asia though), went to Nintendo and Microsoft consoles, then just Nintendo, then PC, and in the end PC, Sony and Microsoft.

Anyway, I'm fine with PC only, but would be nice if it was PC/PS3, and maybe XBox360, if Microsoft allowed their players to play together with PC and PS3 players (but seeing what happened with FFXIV, that's not gonna happen)...
But, if being PC only means that the western servers may keep up with the eastern servers in terms of updates, then I'm all for PC only. :>

For those that prefer playing with controllers, there's some fine gamepads for the PC, including some new ones that Logitech will be releasing soon, somewhat similar to PS3 controllers and their previous "Rumblepad 2".
(http://http://blog.logitech.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/F510_TOP_300_dpi-300x199.jpg)
Since this new controller supports Xinput, that means it'll work in any game that works with the XBox360 PC version controller (it also supports DirectInput, to work with older games).

There's 3 versions of this controller, a cheaper one without vibration, a mid priced one with vibration, and a more expensive one, which is wireless.
They haven't been released yet though, apparently they're going to be released sometime in the next few weeks.

What makes you say that? If it has the same kind of scale in levels as every other action based Phantasy Star and the graphics are around as good as PSU (could happen, many PC games nowadays aimed for huge audiences do not really push the graphics as much as they could) then it is completely possible on 3DS.

I mean, why would they not want it on the followup to the most successful game platform of all time?

How keen Nintendo is to create a proper online service for their next console generation is yet to be seen. Not being on the 3DS is very plausible. I mean, right now Nintendo rule the online world with their friend codes and lack of patching (essential for a game of PSO's nature).
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 announced!

Nintendo has said they are going to change many of their online works in the future, and I think them taking WiiWare and DSiWare more seriously are somewhat of a baby step towards this. They are also very aware of the money Microsoft is making with Xbox Live, and I am certain they would love a bit of that pie.

I personally do not think it will be on the 3DS, but I think it is very possible, all things considered. Just think we are all jumping the gun thinking it will be on HD game consoles and already considering buying shit like a Logitec controller. I do not want anyone to be disappointed, we all hold PSO very highly, after all.

Sure it will come to the consoles, SEGA is most prob in talks with both MS and more so SONY- Given that PS main userbase is in Japan and that means consoles.

Well all know most of Japan is light years behind the west for Online, but I'm just hope for an improved PSO with stunning next gen graphics, that will be enough for me
