Title: Dreamcast News Reporting
Post by: cube_b3 on December 10, 2010, 11:46:08 am
Hello everyone,
[attachment=0:1kkpig26]Swiril.png[/attachment:1kkpig26]
I am new on the news team, I am not sure about my formal designation or title but I'm supposed to be the guy who covers Dreamcast News and Sega's Past (maybe George can tell us my formal title, he said all staffers will be getting titles soon, so let's see).

My time is restricted here as I volunteer at DCS, DCEmu, GSP & RSG.
Aside from the websites I have real life responsibilities such as an internship at a mental hospital (read asylum), regular classes at university and the household domestic responsibilities we all have to attend. That said, I am committed to posting at least one Dreamcast related news every week.

Now Dreamcast, it is a lot more then just a video game console, it is basically a computer and their are plenty of things you can do with a computer.

So I wanted to know besides new video games for the system, what else you all might be interested in:

Hot Topics Include

* SDK's: The Self Development Kits used by aspring game makers to program games for Dreamcast such as Sega's Katana or Cryptic Allusion's KallistiOS
* Operating Systems: Just like we have Linux & Windows, Dreamcast also has operating systems among other fun homebrew activities
* Dreamcast Hardware Development: new hardware for the system such as the Game Park Link cable or the SD card reader
* Dreamcast Online: Current games and servers
* Dreamcast Homebrew News: basically all the stuff amature coders do, apps, emulators, softwares, games (not to be confused with indie games)
* Dreamcast System Emulators

Here is a very brief list, I want to get a proper feel of the demographic here and what you would like (or not like) to see covered.

Fun DC related youtube video's. Japanese good/decent unreleased games that few know about.

That's kind of my suggestion.

According to 1up, the SEGA Dreamcast Collection is in fact coming out on disc. They haven't said when, or what games will be included:

That's great. I do prefer a 'disk' version of the compilation.

If it's just the same titles/ports that they've been releasing digitally, I'll probably just stick with getting the digital titles.

Why is Fast Striker in the December release list on the front page? SEGA is obviously not publishing it.

I am going to make a hack of Sonic & Knuckles and sell it on eBay. Will you put my game on the list too?

Oh come now Sanus, Fast Striker may not be an official SEGA release, but it is one of the few titles pertinent to SEGA fans in December. The folks at NG:DEV.TEAM and Redspotgames have been a great asset to the Dreamcast community and their titles are just as polished (if not more polished) than some official Dreamcast releases. None of the titles are hacks. Quit being such a scrooge.

Yeah Cory!

Also the game isn't available on ebay at the moment, but it was shipped yesterday from NG:Dev.Direct to consumers yesterday.

Further information, all indie games run on KallistiOS, an operating system coded from the ground up by Cryptic Allusion's Dan Potter et al, therefore no Sega Copyrighted trademarks are being violated.

Only love for the system is being shown by legally reverse engineering it and making it continue to do what it was meant to do.

More people here care about the new Shining releases than they do the new Dreamcast releases, and everyone has agreed the series is no longer any good at all.

But it is not published by SEGA, therefore not a game SEGA is releasing in December. I have nothing against the team developing it, but it literally has nothing to do with the company, not even an IP of theirs or anything. If anything, toys that SEGA makes should be a higher priority.

Altered Beast on iPhone is not on there, but this is? It just looks like you were paid to put it up honestly.

Have to agree with Sanus. This has nothing to do with SEGA, does not profit them in anyway and is not linked at all to the company.

Simply because it happens to be on SEGA hardware, does not mean we should cover the title, are we about to cover the arcade titles that run on SEGA hardware too?

I have been appointed to cover retro news (read DREAMCAST), and I plan on doing it through every available channel (that includes reviews, interviews, news, and release dates).

NG:Dev.Team hasn't payed us yet, although I doubt we'd object if they did pay us for advertising. On a serious note NG:Dev.Team is a very small team composed of 2 brothers. If we can help them sell a few more copies via the tiny bit of advertising in the release date section it should be something to be proud off as we are actually helping an indie studio grow and encouraging developers to continue support for the Dreamcast!

@Aki-at: If we can find someone to cover it, we should.
The Arcade scene is pretty dead, I don't think Sega gets a lot of 3rd party support as there isn't any advantage on working on Sega Arcade Boards anymore, it isn't like they will get ported easily to Sega's Home Consoles.

We used to keep tabs on Naomi so we could file petitions and have those games ported to Dreamcast; last game I knew off came out 2 years back, but since Sega discontinued GD-Rom production they couldn't be ported to Dreamcast, and Nintendo really fucked those small studios. I don't know if Lindbergh or RindEdge have had 3rd party support but I think it is unlikely due to there PC architecture they have a higher probability of getting console/pc ports than original games, but I don't know for sure.
It would be nice if we could get somebody to cover it though.

@Sanus: If Sega iPhone games aren't on the release list you should talk to George about it, I don't find any reason for it to not be there.
Don't try and have my dc bits removed cause something that should be covered isn't, and I have to say I don't appreciate you trying to have my dc bits removed.

I'm hardcore into the Dreamcast Modding Community so I'm looking forward to seeing what you have to offer in terms of news.
Good luck, be good, stay in school, have fun.

Totally agree. But this is Sega bit's preoggative to cover all the sega stuff from the games to their sub divisions like Bakugan(which never get's mentioned and sega has a big stake in that franchise, as well as other things most people consider obscure in the west that's being released by sega. It's no point attacking cube on this one you need to direct it at the main staff that allowed it to happen.

We try to cover as much as we can, it isnt easy to cover everything. Sometimes news will get past us... After all we are only human and this isn't actually our job. In fact we're paying out money to keep this place going in our free time.

As for the non-Sega news, I can't say I'm a fan of it either... but it brings in hits and there are members of the community that do like to hear about the Dreamcast scene... I suggest if you don't want to read it, skip over it.
