Guess we @ SEGAbits forums should jump on the bandwagon as well.
http://sonic.sega.jp/20th/ (http://sonic.sega.jp/20th/)
Let the speculation BEGIN!!
I think it's pretty cool how they finally put that oldschool monitor back, with the succesful classic nineties sonic in it.
Some would say that the picture looks degrading towards classic sonic. Others think that this picture is a hint to the direction of the game. That they might mash classic and new school together(which would be awesome)
I personally am skeptic as the picture shows they really love what they have putten down character wise in s4e1. Yeah it's hard to miss that it's the s4e1 model, which I despise. Just to clarify, I have nothing against the newer model, I am judging from a sort of objective standpoint. I just think they should put more thought and care into into sonic's character apeal. Sonic's looks have never been consistent and I have no problem with change when it's actually good. In the 90's you could see the progression from sonic 1 to even sonic R. The sonic fighters model looked great too(the one from shenmue's capsule toys). But from sa1 his model looked either decent(sonic unleashed/colors) or kind of crap (sonic heroes, sonic 06. s4e1).
Modern sonic can look GREAT too (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYXGXKNcnyo)
Anyway, there's not really much to get out of the picture. In short I like the monitor with classic model in it, which might hint to something nice. But dislike how they do not make modern sonic look a little bit better, instead just use the hideous CG model from s4e1 with a different animation, giving the impression that nobody at Sonicteam thinks that something's off about him, in my opinion.
Share your thoughts. What sort of game do you expecT? What do you think about the picture and what it's presenting?
-
And some people need to get over it...
This whole character model debate is as bad as 'will sonic marry amy' dude, sonic fans... Apart from that weird shit in 'Sonic 06' The Sonic model hasn't changed THAT much in the past decade. They're still using a Sonic that looks basically like the Sonic from Sonic Adventure.
In Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic had freaking trainers (soap shoes or what ever, a marketing gimmick for real shoes...) That's probably the biggest ever change to his look, bar the green eyes. But suprise suprise nobody gave a shit... Because even that, which I would consider the most jarring change to the character ever... Is pretty damn trivial.
If anything the Sonic model used in Sonic Colours, Unleashed, Sonic Episode 1... Which btw is basically the same model to everyone except the most hardcore mouth-breathing nerds... That is PROBABLY the best model so far and has the best of both modern and classic Sonic.
Mario had a very similar redesign like Sonic did... You don't see the Mario fans shitting their pants over trivial crap like green eyes, slightly darker shade blue or an inch taller.
Is the above image disrespectful to classic Sonic?... No, anyone that suggests it is anything but a cool throwback to the past is a complete and utter twat.
Happy 2011 Sonic fans.
-
I would prefer them keep the older model, I like it way more for some reason.
(how can you hate that?!)
Whatever it is, I hope it has a classic model Sonic unlockable. Not too much to hope for.

@sharky
I agree on the last part. I just saw it somewhere so I listed it.
But I just think sonic can look more apealing if someone actually gives a damn about his looks at sonicteam. I am 100% sure that his character apeal was one of the big reasons for sonic's succes. It wasn't just because of the good games, but also the way he looked so great which caused interest. I am sure i'm biased on this subject myself but sonic here in holland is overall a laughing stock, they think he looks like shit and the whole franchise to be overall childish. Sonic looking more grown doesn't make him more apealing to a wider audience than just kids if that's the idea behind the whole change. It actually makes him less apealing to older people. The whole cutesy behind the classic sonic's attitude was much more apealing than what we have now. Tell me that you don't feel prouder and more confident wearing a classic sonic shirt instead of the newer model shirt. The general reactions from others towards the former would be much more positive.
I'm basically one of those fans that would really love to see sonicteam aknowledge that there are still a lot of classic sonic fans around that didn't find the change nescesary. It'll never do bad to just cater to us for once in a while, and "not fail" in doing so, if that's even possible seeing how s4e1 turned out (physics). I believe sonic would only become more succesful this way. This way they'll only appeal to more people. They allready got a lot of fans that would buy anything no matter what, count in the people they'll attract back and the new people they attract and we have a winner. I honestly don't get why sonicteam still haven't done anything. Either it's their ego in caring what they want themselves or misscomunication. With the better communication lately i'd have to believe the former, but it could also be that the community managers themselves are opposed to the idea.
Some just have to realise of how succesful was back than. It wasn't just the 6 million people that bought sonic 2. Sonic was a globally liked character and was one of the cool things to like back then.
Anyway, I personally interpreted that out of the picture but I don't want this whole thread to be about his looks. I hope there will be more speculating about the game directions too.
I would like to know what you'd like to see for a sonic game.
-
My biggest issue with Sonic's newer look has more to do with his and the other characters personality changes. I think things like Sonic's "Toothy grin" where he is smirking with teeth showing like a retard and the Shadow-like characters who are usually seen with Dragon Ball Z-like poses are some of the most embarrassing things SEGA does, I really just do not like to be seen around images of these things.
To be fair, they probably did that stuff more during the Dreamcast days, but the overall quality of the series was not in question and the marketing campaigns were not aimed at toddlers. Plus that was all happening when I was like 12, everyone knows all 12 year olds only enjoy stupid shit.
-
I am sure i'm biased on this subject myself but sonic here in holland is overall a laughing stock, they think he looks like shit and the whole franchise to be overall childish.
BINGO! Give people in Holland a prize of some kind... Sonic, IS for children. These so called 'OLD SCHOOL FANS' are a tiny minority of horrible mouth breathing nerds making a big stink on the internet.
Sonic has changed with the times, just like Mario, Ninja Turtles, Spiderman, Mickey Mouse and most other things for kids. They have changed to appeal to the kids of today. You think people in Sonic Team don’t care about Sonics look? Wake up... The REASON the character has changed is because they do care.
Frankly I don't blame them for not wanting to pander to one of the worst fan bases I've ever come across... Sonic fans are fucking horrible, whiney shitbags... Extremely ungrateful and will find something to moan about in even the best situation.
Sonics looks RIGHT now is the best it has ever been, I do LIKE some versions of classic Sonic but the little fat Sonic on the Sonic 1 box isn't appealing to me and it wont be to kids...
I'm fucking irritated that the 20th Anniversary thread has been hijacked by this fucking stupid shit... RIGHT from the start.
Surely... SURELY there are other forums to discuss this crap.
-
All I can see from the picture is they are showing Sonic's first outing (Japanese boxart you know) and showing his latest look as celebration of how he has changed. I think thinking about anything else would be over analyzing things.
Anyway, I really do not see anything wrong with his current look, fix the quality of the game and bring back classic Sonic elements (Spindash, badniks, art direction etc) and ditch certain elements (Speed boosters, boost button etc) and people will forgive easily.
Basically build on everything on Sonic Colours. Hopefully a fully 3D adventure next time round.
Offtopic but: The original Turtles were changed to fit the original cartoon actually. There was a mass departure from extremely violent ninjas who cut people up to extremely child friendly cartoon characters.
They've only just started to make them go back to their original style.
-
^Exactly my point about the Turtles, they were redesigned to appeal to the mass market at the time... Children.
The point is, characters that stand the test of time HAVE to change with the times.
Now I wouldn't be apposed to the classic Sonic being optional in new Sonic games. But the current Sonic is actually a lot more appealing to the target audience and honestly... It has been this way for a decade now.
Some people need to get the fuck over it.
-
I am not sure why you are getting so bent out of shape about this Sharky, it is established that the majority of Sonic fans are freaks.
My point was that Sonic stuff is just embarrassing. Even the worst of Mario stuff now is not annoying for the majority of people to look at, except maybe the soccer games, but that is only because they tried to make it look like a Sonic game... Everything else you posted except MAYBE Ninja Turtles is not hard at all for many older people to get into, even when characters like Mickey are dark (Epic Mickey) it still does not detract much from what he has been like in over 80 years. Leaving Sonic's model design alone, the worlds that Sonic visits are nothing like they were ever in with his first 10 years.
Obviously people are going to complain, the series completely reinvents itself every other year. You would find it hard to be a Shenmue fan if there were dozens of releases a year that had little to nothing to do with what people liked about the IP to begin with.
-
But we arent talking about any of those things... We are talking about the character model. Which frankly I'm VERY tired of hearing about.
If you're going to make a 20th anniversary sonic thread... Don't START right out of the gate with this nonsense.
-
While that particular picture doens't look great, I don't think Sonic looks too bad in his current incarnation. Some drawings of him are just horrendous though (like Sanus said with his big shit eating grin especially).
And yes, Sonic fans scare the crap out of me.
-
I don't know, I've met some very nice Sonic fans. Especially over at TSS. I guess with a franchise that is so old and broad in its range of games, comics, cartoons, art styles, etc, you're bound to run into fans that seem rather crazy. I get along with the ones who play the games for what they are, talk shit about the bad ones are are optimistic about the ones that seem to be striving towards being a quality game. Oh yeah, and those who like to reminisce of the good ol' days in the 90's. They're fun.
However, SatAM fans and those who stuck it out with the Archie comics from issue 1 until now scare me. I jumped ship at issue 100 when I realized it was becoming a furry romance series filled with some f-d up Mushroom Kingdom run by chipmunk-squirrels. Them and those who take physics and coding a little too seriously.
-
@mademang
Lol yeah, but in the end we´re just fans. Caring about the characters design seems to become a taboo around the fanbase. Always someone throws the ZOMG green eyes card trying to make you look like a fool.
We do know nothing about the game itself but I hope the picture kind of references the direction of the game even though the classic sonic is just in the monitor. Or maybe it´s just a random picture made to celebrate his 20th :D
I'll just go with what Aki said
-
Or maybe it´s just a random picture made to celebrate his 20th :D
Bingo... It is kind of obvious it has nothing to do with the upcoming game.
If they are using old renders its very probably the whole thing was made by the webteam or something and has nothing to do with what ever game they are making.
-
When I say Sonic fans scare me, I don't mean you guys, I mean the nutters like Barry described.
-
When I say Sonic fans scare me, I don't mean you guys, I mean the nutters like Barry described.
And in 2011 the nutters will be coming out of the woodwork to celebrate the 20th! So so many shitty fanmade tribute videos are incoming... I'm quite afraid.

Lol. I maybe shouldn't have done that :P. I loled hard when I read that article.
Aside from the giggles. Someone translated the website. It's nothing extraordinary.
In 2011, Sonic meets his 20th anniversary.
This year is met the 20th anniversary since "Sonic the Hedgehog" have been released as an action game for the Mega Drive (brand name for North America: Genesis), on 23rd June 1991. Since the release of the first work, many series have been added so far, a total of more than 70 000 000 units have been sold in the whole world as software for home consoles, and aside from home consoles, now too he is loved and enjoyed by everyone around the world in various fields such as mobile computers, anime and cartoons, clothing or sound.
This year where the 20th anniversary is met, it is planned to carry out projects and events all around the world in order to get many people to have fun, and transmit them through this site, including gratitude to all the fans who have supported [Sonic].
In 2011, please expect that Sonic participates actively on various scenes!

There is actually a really funny story behind this. Kogen came in contact with the guy who made Robotnik for Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and asked him to draw him in a bikini again (there was one episode where he tried to be a model), and the guy thought it was extremely funny and really got into it and made it like that.
It is too bad the site is not open still, it was really hard to tell who was serious and who was not. The woman who ran it all had pictures of Sonic [spoiler:3pbhfmz8]on vibrators and various other gadgets[/spoiler:3pbhfmz8] and claimed that she married him. Also she made constant claims all over the site that she wanted Sonic to puke in her mouth and stomp on her face.
This is the kind of stuff I discuss with Kogen almost every day, we are big fans of these people, and that site was far, far from the worst.
What a wonderful way to start off the 20th anniversary discussion indeed!
-
Oh yeah, Milton Knight is awesome (dude who drew the above pic). I had him do a Robotnik painting for me a while back, it's excellent! He used gold paint on the jumpsuit. I recommend any AoStH fans, or Robotnik fans, ask for a painting from Milton. http://www.miltonknight.net/ (http://www.miltonknight.net/)

^ I like his art and then again I don't like his art. He seems like a good artist, but I was never into that old 1950's Disney style stuff... Also, why so many misshaped boobs/woman.

Couldn't Sega hire platinumgames to work on this enw Sonic?
I mean, Sonic Team is not so reliable...
-

:S
-
Why are you confused? My idea is brilliant.
-
PlatinumGames are not a retarded group of developers, so no matter what way you look at it, they would make a better game.
-
I'd think PG would make a better sequel to Streets of Rage or Golden Axe. The team behind Jet Set Radio should have had a crack at a Sonic game. Would have been loads better than '06.
My opinion on Sonic Team is that it stopped being a "team" after the release of SA2. After that, there was really no solid "team", mostly it was some guys from here, some guys from there, thrown together to make a game starring Sonic. Sometimes they had a good combination, other times they had a bad combination.
Around 2003, despite not truly knowing who worked for Sonic Team or which devs made which game, I remember having the distinct feeling that no two Sonic games were developed by the same team and that whoever was making the better games at the time were the real Sonic Team and the shitty games were made by pretenders falsely acting under the title.
-

You're not the first to suggest this idea, and every time it's just as brilliant as when I last heard it.
-
I think Platinum Games would like to work on more than just trying to help a series that was in freefall for pretty much the whole of the last decade ie Make their own original IPs.
I'm sure if you offered Kamiya Shinobi he'd bite someone's hand off for it though.
-
This is weird... *Checks Watch*
Sharky should be flipping out about the Sonic Team bashing by now...
In any event, AM2 should make a Sonic game. In fact, they should make every game ever. Then they should make a game based on them making games. I would buy it.
What was this thread about again?
-
Flip out? Me?... Until Sonic Colours, I hadn't baught a 3D Sonic game since the Dreamcast days. I'm the last person to flip out, if anything all I've ever said is that Sonic Team have made some great games recently...
All I'm saying is that the people that tarnish Sega with the 'Sonic sux so Sega Sux brush' aren't much worse then the people that do the same thing with Sonic Team.
I dont think I need to flip out, Sonic Colours has spoken for itself in my book and PSO2 will do the same.
-
I didn't mean flip out, but usually you don't like it when people bash Sonic Team. Kinda like how I flip out when someone bashes... I dunno Splinter Cell or something (you probably can better say what I defend).
Anyway, I still haven't played Sonic Colours. I'd best get onto that pronto.
-
It is so weird hearing people suggest PG to make Sonic games, very weird. I remember Inaba or someone from PG's reaction when somebody jack ass asked him to port After Burner: Climax to XBLA.
He was like wtf, I can't it is AM2's game, how about I make a request with you for them to port it?
I'd think PG would make a better sequel to Streets of Rage or Golden Axe. The team behind Jet Set Radio should have had a crack at a Sonic game. Would have been loads better than '06.
I think the best sequel to GA would be by the guy who has already make the best sequel. Makato Uchida.
The best guy to make SOR4 is Noriyoshi Oba with Ayano Koshiro as character designer, they made the last 3 games it would be blasphemous to suggest anyone else have a crack at their game.
JSR team got their chance with Sonic Riders, and I think they did a functional if not an awesome job.
My opinion on Sonic Team is that it stopped being a "team" after the release of SA2. After that, there was really no solid "team", mostly it was some guys from here, some guys from there, thrown together to make a game starring Sonic. Sometimes they had a good combination, other times they had a bad combination.
I apologize for questioning your opinion as you are entitled to it, but they were fine until AstroBoy (followed by Shadow 05, Sonic Riders, Sonic 06 etc started happening) came out.
While I haven't played Sonic Heroes for more than 15 minuites on PS2, for all intents and purposes it is one of Sonic Team's finest work as it was the first game they simultaneously developed for 3 systems and they did a great job at it.
Are you sure your not confusing the years, as in 2003 only Sonic Adventure DX, and Sonic Heroes came out for home consoles. Sonic Team also released an update to PSO and a new Puyo Pop, but that has nothing to do with Sonic.
AstroBoy came out in 2004, Shadow came out in 2005.
-

He was like wtf, I can't it is AM2's game, how about I make a request with you for them to port it?
This is wrong, Kamiya personally requested that AM2 to request Afterburner Climax to be ported onto the consoles as he felt it was one of the best games he ever played. He even made a tweet about his excitement when ABC was announced for consoles and another tweet about how he feels its the best game of the generation.
While I haven't played Sonic Heroes for more than 15 minuites on PS2, for all intents and purposes it is one of Sonic Team's finest work as it was the first game they simultaneously developed for 3 systems and they did a great job at it.
It does not matter if they managed to develop over three systems when the game itself is terrible and the ports from the Gamecube version are mostly terrible. In no way the team's finest work.
-
I said or someone, I don't follow PG.
Also all the known critics would disagree with you. Sonic Heroes was critically and commercially very successful.
The Gamecube ports have also been praised for the extra content, game boy advance compatibilty etc.
I am not disagreeing with your opinion, if you think they are terrible then you think they are terrible indeed.
As far as the gaming press and sales are concerned the games were critically and commercially successful, very successful on the other hand Sonic 06 is a terrible game, a critical and commercial failure. My opinion and admiration towards it doesn't change anything.
:)
-
So, besides platinumgames, which company could work on this new sonic project?
Oh, and let's suppose the Sonic Team is retired...
-

Critically very successful? Are you having a laugh? The game was panned by many critic, if you go to Metacritic, the highest rated version is the Xbox version at 73%, hardly "very successful"
Commercially is a different matter but Ben 10 is a very successful video game, so that is a moot point.
The Gamecube ports have also been praised for the extra content, game boy advance compatibilty etc.
How is the Gamecube the port when it's the lead version? The PS2 and Xbox are the ports and the PS2 port was terrible.
As far as the gaming press and sales are concerned the games were critically and commercially successful, very successful on the other hand Sonic 06 is a terrible game, a critical and commercial failure.
Commercially Sonic Heroes was a huge success.
Critically don't kid yourself, Virtua Fighter 5, Valkyria Chronicles, Bayonetta, these are critically successful, I wouldn't call the flagship franchise of SEGA get mostly under 8s and 9s considered very good.
-
I'd think PG would make a better sequel to Streets of Rage or Golden Axe. The team behind Jet Set Radio should have had a crack at a Sonic game. Would have been loads better than '06.
I could not disagree with this more.
Just because Streets of Rage and Golden Axe are action games does not mean they are right for PlatinumGames. They are completely different styles and game types than stuff like Bayonetta and Vanquish.
The people who made Jet Set Radio are all over the place now, many have left SEGA entirely. The main group works on the sports games in Japan now. This would be a terrible group for a Sonic game I think.
A SEGA IP PlatinumGames would be wonderful with is Space Harrier, and that might happen, Kamiya has said it is the game series he wants to make games for most on Twitter.
So, besides platinumgames, which company could work on this new sonic project?
Oh, and let's suppose the Sonic Team is retired...
AM2.

Just because these people were there when the franchises were created does not mean they would be best off in their hands. In many cases it can be the worst, look how everyone that split from Sonic Team just makes crap now, all of their good ideas are drained entirely.
A somewhat strange example in comparison would be that arguably the best work to come out of the Walt Disney Corporation came after he died. I am not knocking down his work at all, but I am pretty sure things like Aladdin and The Little Mermaid are much bigger and much more loved than Bambi or Cinderella, which should not be able to happen because those movies had around a 50 year start!
-
Here's an idea I just had now, and something I think would be really awesome.
For Sonic's 20th anniversary, they could make a game where each level is made by a different developer.
Sonic Team could make level 1
AM2 could make level 2
Creative Assembly could make level 3
etc etc
Just get some wildly different developers all together and have them make just one level with as much freedom as possible. Let them decide the art style, the layout of the levels, the music could all be the individuals choice. Obviously there would be some guidelines, but I think giving them lots of freedom would lead to some really awesome variety.
-

So like title it "Sonic SEGAmix"? I could see it working better as a mini-game compilation, rather than a progressive game where you go from one stage to the next. Or maybe all the stages are selected from a hub, where a classic Sonic is controlled.
The hub would be a lot like Sonic Jam's hub world (hey, why not an HD remix of that world?) and you can view everything from commercials, artwork and character bios. Then you also access the many developers takes on the franchise. Sonic Team would most likely feature modern Sonic in stages reminiscent of Sonic Colors but sans Wisp, and add in the spin attack. I could see AM2 being more of an insane arcade game, super fast speeds. Sort of like Black Knight (the concept, not the execution) meets After Burner Climax.
With all the bonus features included, and maybe even roms of the many Genesis/Master Mystem/Game Gear games, the release would feel like less of a game and more of a celebratory release. I would love to see that.
However, we will never see that.
-

The main people who made JSR and JSRF are still inside SEGA . Ueda-san, Kihuchi-san, Kawagoe-san, Hosokawa-san ECT.

LOL! What!? Can't remember it... XDD
I hope that Sega makes some original items for Japan too. Recently they are just importing Sonic items from other countries... -_-

That box shot is new though, I believe. Cool to see the logo in use!
