Open World is a very vague and broad term. The ability to freely travel around the cities in Shenmue II and play mini-games, practice martial arts and talk to people however you wanted could easily be considered 'Open World'.

I'm sure Yakuza is considered open world despite different areas opening at different plot points too.

"Open world is a term for video games where a player can move freely through a virtual world and is given considerable freedom in choosing how or when to approach objectives, as opposed to other computer games that have a more linear structure"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_world

Would be considered open world.

"Open world" sounds kinda odd to me. It doesn't quite have the elegance of "Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment."

Eh, I always thought "Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment" sounded awkward as fuck. FREE on the other hand is a nice acronym.

It's just semantics at this point.

Was Shenmue really the first 3D 'open world' game? Trying to think what else was around at the time that could compare. Possible a lot of PC RPGs?

So many people are talking about Sony making it possible...the root of it all is Sega and Yu Suzuki's relationship IMO. Everything came on top of it afterwards.

So, the Kickstarter is running a little slow today. It's sitting on a comfy 3.5 million is of right now.

Still I wonder, SEGA did give him permission to use the Shenmue license, but doesn't Yu Suzuki have to at least pay some licensing fees?

My guess is they gave him the license for free but they get a cut of the profits.

They really need to bring new tiers and fresh excitement to keep people talking. Even quick interviews from staff would help as they talk about the project and the last 2 games etc.

Jim Sterling has spoken about it too: https://youtu.be/8TTdFNQz_xw

He said he coudn't prove any disclosure on business deals, like if Sega gets cut from profits.

Suzuki said they were supportive in providung assets...and I guess Sega woudn't give that away for free.

EDIT: Another great interview

So Yu Suzuki doesn't play videogames. That's so fucking brutal.

I like the car comment in regards to mobile markets. You need impressive and representative games for your brand even if it isn't as profitable.

He's never been a big video game fan.

This is why I'm not worried about games like Sonic going mobile only. Only a problem with smaller series.

Problem is Sega has zero big series in the West.

Yakuza doesn't reach a million.
PSO is nowhere to be seen.
Alien has 3 games and 2 are shit.

Aside from Sonic, we have fucking Spreadsheet Simulator 20XX (which I love). It's not enough.

You forgot about Persona, Total War and Company of Heroes!

(Company of Heroes 2 is at 1,441,946 and Rome II is at 1,958,522 according to Steamspy.)

They definitely need to up how big their Japanese games are in the West and I feel Phantasy Star Online 2 would have been massive but what can you do.
