New Total War To Be Unveiled At E3
May 20, 2010 at 7:49 PM - Andrew Burnes -  8 Comments
The Creative Assembly sprung a significant pre-E3 leak today. From one source, EuroGamer was told of the studio's plans to create a 2012 Olympics title, and then, hours later, we received an email revealing that a new Total War title is to be announced at E3.
Though in possession of full details, our lives wouldn't be worth living if we divulged what we know, but let's just say that the new PC-only game eschews the gunpowder weaponry of recent Total War titles and gets back to basics. And if you need further reassurance of this information's veracity, check out this well-timed tweet from the developers.

And I was really hoping for some kind of follow up to Viking/Spartan!

Knowing its from CA UK then I have no doubts in my mind it will be awesome.

I think it will be Rome 2 total war... Seems like the logical step.

Or Medieval 3. Considering the pattern has been:
Make new engine (Shogun)
Use it to make Medieval Setting (Medievel)
Make new Engine (Rome)
Use it to make Medieval Setting (Medievel 2)
Make new Engine (Empire, Napoleon)

Although with Empire and Napoleon it kinda bucks the trend. And at this stage I would rather  see a new Rome since it's been much longer since we had that than Medievel. Would be great to see all the updates like night-battles, improved diplomacy and city building all thrown into the Rome period.

I just think it is very unlikely they would do Medieval 3 so soon after 2. It would be even more odd considering there is a large portion of the community that regard the Rome setting as the most fun.

Myself I would like to see a spin off in the style of Tolkens Lord of the Rings but thats another story.

Yeah I agree, Rome is more likely. Although from the sounds of it I thought Medieval was the most popular setting by developers/players.

Also as for fantasy Total War, you and anyone else who is interested should check this out:
http://www.kingarthurthewargame.com/main.html
It's basically Total War with a fantasy setting based on King Arthur.

I remember CA saying that When they released Shogun: TW (first TW) it was Revolutionary, and Medieval was evolutionary, and it they walked on this policy the whole series... a Revolutionary TW, followed by an Evolutionary one.

Shogun - Revolutionary
Medieval - Evolutionary
Rome - Revolutionary
Medieval 2 - Evolutionary
Empire - Revolutionary
Napoleon - Evolutionary
Next TW - Revolutionary?

I wonder what they will introduce to the series.

As long as it is not Future: Total War (think about it, maybe no gunpowder, but lazers!) or something like that, it should be great.

I was saying to Sharky a while back that Dune would be a perfect IP for a Total War game. Lasers (or Lasguns) exist, but they are almost never used in battles because the energy sheilds used by soldiers will stop bullets/explosions completely, but cause enourmous explosions when lasers come in contact with them. Meaning that all combat is done with Force Fields and close range swords/knives that have to be manuevered to penetrate the shields.

Not to mention you could have a stack of units consisting of the Fremen and Sardaukers etc etc, and of course the Sand Worms!

That doesn't sound very 'back to basics' to me!

And yeah, as mademan said, Dune would make a very cool Sci-fi TW.
