As I said on SNN (A Sonic wiki I am an admin at), I believe if they made a Sonic game with at least some MMOG features it would made that games shelf life last more longer than it's market.

My idea would be for the next Sonic game to have a "side game" called Avatar Battle Mode. It be like Battle Mode from Shadow's game but with Avatars and wispons. As long as it has more than three stages and more types of competitive modes then Avatar Battle Mode would carry the whole Sonic game for years.

Don't believe me? When Fortnite was release, it was released as a game with it's own story mode while the battle royale was a free seperate mode. In yet the free battle royale of the game has pretty much taken the entire identity of Fortnite and been keeping to it's audience interest for years!
If a Sonic game could copy what makes this MMO games so popular it too could make a Sonic game that's marketed for 2-3 years last for yeard on end.

Would love if the Avatar Battle Mode was expanded to be like PSO2 in layout.

I dig your idea, it will make people checking their game often.
Simple version of this also exists in Sonic at Olympic Games - Tokyo 2020 mobile game.
Used to play the game daily just because of this feature.

About adding new thing in PSO2, SEGA could also still feeling bitter about Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution.
It has such a good idea for a spinoff but the general reception wasn't that good.

I've got ideas on how the "Avatar Battle Mode" could work. I've jotted down all my "fan game ideas" I've had for years. To sum it up if Avatar Battle Mode is a Sonic-copy of PSO2, I can imagine the new Restoration HQ being like the ARKS ship for Avatars. Or the very least the town center of Sunset Heights/Park Avenue be made as the shopping district for Avatars. I can imagine a brand new Avatar customization with "Speed, Power, Fly and Technique" serving as a class system for Avatars. Haven't decided if certain coloured wispons are limited to your Class-type or grants unique functions with them.

And like traditional Battle Mode from Shadow's game, Avatars can be pitted against one another in arenas, but I'd rather expand it to be like Team Fortress 2 with a variety of competitive modes to choose from.
Other than competitive matches there is also racing matches, with virtual hedgehogs substituting Sonic.

Factions might be a thing. Players could probably make their Avatars join the Sonic Resistance or the Eggman Empire. Kinda like World of Warcraft with the Horde and the Alliance.

I never played PSOe3 but I've seen clips of it which looks like Sega were trying to copy the Yu-Gi-Oh craze at the time. I agree it did look good but it looked better off as a side-game than the need to be the main game.

Like Triple Triad in FFVIII or Tetra Master in FFIX.

They could of still give C.A.R.D. Revolution it's own story episode... just accessable in the Casino area while Episode III had a more proper story. (Did PSO1 had a Casino? I can't remember.)

I doubt it could be implemented smoothly in Sonic Rangers since the game looks like it isn't as serious as Sonic Forces in term of story.

It isn't. Sonic Forces had the chance for DLCs or Expansions that could of expanded use of Avatars, but they didn't. I would of loved to see a Sonic version pf 2fort and have groups of Avatars defend their flags over it.
There could still be a chance for Sonic Rangers to have Avatar Battle Mode even such a battle mode has little to do with the game itself. (Just s Secret Rings had a Party Mode that was almost an entirely independant project from the main game.)

Can you imagine what PSO2 would be like if you made a brand new character and you can choose to side with ARKS or Falz? And that each faction had it's own series of episodes and characters to meet with? The ship being all dark and twisted but still has everything ARKS ships have.

I just figure I can imagine a Sonic Avatar MMORPG doing the same. Players can make a brand new character that could side with either Sonic or Eggman.

But let's face it. They're not gonna.
