What Toshihiro Nagoshi would've done before games

Quote
"I graduated with a film degree, but at that time the Japanese film industry was in a shambles and work meant either being an assistant director for TV or a porno director. That's not why I came to Tokyo. I started thinking that video games were really interesting and wanted to make them." - SEGA's Toshihiro Nagoshi

Well, I'm very glad to see that Nagoshi made the decision he did! Now I'm getting weird crossover thoughts of his game ideas in the adult film industry. Super Monkey Balls, anyone?

Now that is just sad.

On one hand we have an ungraduated video game coding magician (Naka) on the other hand we have a toasted almost porno director.

Which would you prefer as the head designer at SEGA?

I like Nagoshi's games, but he isn't a designer. He is a director and producer.

Neither tbh. Naka should have never moved from the R&D and Programing side and I don't think Nahoshi san should have moved from the Arcade side . Would have much rather seen Yoji Ishii , Yu Suzuki or Masayoshi Kikuchi lead the consumer Teams.

It's pretty criminal the way SEGA have treated much less neglected Suzuk-san. I can understand no Shenmue III, but Yu Suzuki got another AAA racer left in him at least

Thats the truth, but I don't see why we can't have them all. Why do we need to pick and choose? Nagoshi does some great stuff on his own.

We are picking and choosing as out of the old boys only Nagoshi is running around juggling 2 ips with a third one on the way.

Where as Naka's last 2 games weren't even published by SEGA, which is simply WRONG.

So I guess people such as myself who aren't huge fans of Nagoshi kind of start a hate thing towards him cause he's pumping out games at fixed intervals where as others are barely blips on the radar.

Naka left SEGA because he didn't want to handle a big studio, which Nagoshi has  no problem in doing. Just different mindset. Why are you blaming SEGA for this?

You are acting like SEGA sat down and said "Yu Suzuki, fuck off because we like brown man better". Diffrent teams etc.

Nagoshi took a long time to get where he is. Instead of being a douche bag and crying about Naka, maybe you should consider why he is where he is.

So what happend to all the other heads?

Makato Uchida, Rieko Kodama, Noriyoshi Oba, Hisao Oguchi, Mie Kumagi etc etc.

How come we rarely ever hear of them yet Nagoshi keeps churning games at regular intervals?

Cube, sadly Ohba has left SEGA several years ago; earlier joining GungHo ent. where became director of newly created GungHo Works(already dead) and subsequently moved on march of 2010 into Premium Agency, a japanese studio where the CEO is another ex-SEGA employee who also worked at Shenmue.

Oguchi, after passing to the Sammy side of the Holding, was recently promoted, and now is Senior Managing Director, Representative Director, General Manager of R&D Group Div., besides being Director and CCO of the Holding.

Therefore, regarding these two "heads", you can put your mind at rest

Naka is an asshole who never even really wanted to work for SEGA in the first place and forced dozens of games to be canceled and so much great work to leave SEGA and form extremely high quality game development companies that are incredibly successful.

Nagoshi is a saint compared to him.

And just what games did Naka cancel?. Please don't say Sonic X because it wasn't Naka that stopped that one, but SEGA America cancelled that one, and NiGHTS II never got past the prototype stage for the DC, before the Sonic Team were ordered to make a On-Line game by none other than Isao Okawa.

And if people want to play the silly he canclled this and that game the games Lets remember than Nagoshi-sand cancelled Super Monkeyball for the DC (a true kick in the teeth for any die-hard SEGA fan) , and the 4 X-Box games Smilebit had in development all went bye bye when Nagoshi-san took control of the group

The way SEGA treated Yu Suzuki is a crime, Yu Suzuki put SEGA on the Map and more or less single handedly made the SEGA in the 80's and 90's , and the way that man has been pushed back to the side lines and left to rot is an utter disgrace. But the trouble is the likes of Suzuki and Nagoshi san or the old guard, SEGA needs to start to bring up the young producers now, like it gave Nagoshi, Suzuki and Hisao Oguchi their chance in their younger days.

I know there are a lot of "etc..." but just keeping an eye on someones:

- Makoto Uchida
He is doing a great job for Sega in China. He is also responsible for some titles we are playing or seeing these days; he is just not "creating" new things anymore. He is pratically the BOSS there.

- Rieko Kodama
Her newest game is 7th Dragon, and the game is beautiful and very well made. Yes, she still making games. I know that because she told us on the super special edition of P-SPEC.

- Noriyoshi Oba
He made good things when on Sega, but has him really made original things? I can't remember... From rumors, he left almost because Naka Yuji was a jerk. Also, his last works at Sega failed on sales.

- Hisao Oguchi
He is just a game designer and I don't like him. He is the responsible why Yu Suzuki is not working on nothing at Sega now. He was the president, he disliked Yu Suzuki, he managed to ruin almost everything Yu was doing there. That's why Yu almost left Sega. At least he is good at making pachinko machines.

- Mie Kumagai
Well, see the front page of Segabits.

The rest of the star cast we know that stills on Sega are working really hard there. Why we can't see new projects from them? Because the new policy created by the new president is very clear: if the project does not have 100% guarantee that it can sell at least 150k copies, it got rejected.

Last I've heard, Sega is rejecting a lot of projects from them ;p

About the topic, Nagoshi was Yu Suzuki pupil, and for me, all his games are just cheaper or different versions of Yu Suzuki productions and some Sega major titles.
He is selling, so it's okay for Sega. Also, Sega needed someone to show to the media, and Nagoshi was choosen. He is just a PR boy ;p Like Hideo Kojima does for Konami. It's just a face; an image.

 Some comparisons:

- Space Harrier(YU) X Planet Harriers(Nagoshi)
- OutRun(YU) X Daytona USA(Nagoshi)
- Virtua Fighter(YU) X Spike Out(Nagoshi)
- Shenmue(YU) X Yakuza(Nagoshi)
- Sonic(SEGA) X Monkey Ball(Nagoshi)
- Golden Axe(SEGA) X Slash Out(Nagoshi)
- Street Fighter(Capcom) X Burning Rival(Nagoshi)
- Panzer Dragoon(SEGA) X Panzer Dragoon Orta(Nagoshi)
- F-ZERO(Nintendo) X F-ZERO GX(Nagoshi)

He said on an interview that he hates GTA. He said recently that they showed that movie from Binary Domain because the foreign users would complain about an announce without it.

When in charge of the CS section of Sega, he said he would never allow a new game from a franchise that failed on sales in the past (that included Panzer Dragoon).

I dunno if I like him or not, but I know that he saved Sega at once.
