Was 2006 the worst year for gaming in over 30 years?

When I was making that list of games trying to remember back with what was released in 2006 I generally had a very hard time trying to think of any really great games. I could only think of like five that I thought that were all that good honestly.

I mean, it is understandable considering how early into the lifespan the Xbox 360 was, and the other consoles were just dying off or being made, but still... Any other year I can usually name more than five games I thought were pretty good. In fact, pretty much every other year I can name a solid ten or more, with something like 1992 or 1985 I could name dozens.

Sam and Max Save the World
Splinter Cell: Double Agent (worst game in the series IMO, but still very good)
Virtua Fighter 5
Virtua Tennis 3
Yakuza 2

Overall, seems pretty solid to me.

Not a huge amount, but enough high quality games to make up for it.
Even with just Okami, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Elite Beat Agents, and Yakuza 2, I'd call it a really successful year.

Guitar Hero II got plenty of play time from me back then.  I remember I'd run to Futureshop on my lunch breaks back then just to play 2 songs (all I had time for), and then running back. Good times .

Not really, I just meant in general.

Maybe I worded it wrong, but I meant that overall there were less great games than every other year around 2006.

Even many of the unarguably good sequels released that year cannot come close to how great some of their earlier releases in their franchises, like Twilight Princess, Medieval II: Total War, Virtua Tennis 3, Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, Splinter Cell and Sam & Max Save the World.

It had Okami, Oblivion, and Godhand... So it's probably one of the best years from last generation for me.

This entire console generation has been pretty awful, what with the way that the gramers and the casuals started to dominate the industry. True gamers were constantly left parched for more gamer games.

It was pretty barren. I remember buying Dead Rising and trying to convince myself it was actually fun.

God Hand and Outrun C2C are two of the best games of the last decade though imo, and they were released in 06.
