Relevance of Sonic 4?
« on: June 10, 2011, 01:32:54 am »
Sonic 4 while marketed as 2D, is infact 100% 3D just like Rush, Unleashed, Colors and Generations - Neither game use Hand drawn sprites or backgrounds, they are all digitally rendered, so at this point what is the relevance of continuing with Sonic 4, if you already have Generations aside from the fact that Tails will be playable which I think Generations should simply include and save us some money.

Because of these 2 series running simultaneously we are actually not getting a fully fleshed out Sonic experience, we all complained about excessive characters, no body said remove every other playable chareacter and start dividing Sonic into different characters (Werehog, Classic, Modern, What's Next?).

This needs to stop!
It was back to the solo origins with Secret Rings but now it's like the 5th Solo adventure and I am sick of it, I want to Fly with Tails, Climb with Knuckles, hell I wouldn't even mind some short shooting miniquest with Gamma/Omega or Big fishing.

Sega realised that Sonic 4 was a piece of shit, so they've done Sonic Generations properly instead.

I hope that Sonic 4 Episode 2 is quietly swept under the rug and forgotten about.

Sonic 4 isn't 3D.

I stopped reading right there.

They should have made it 4D and then advertised it all like 'Sonic 4: This time there are 4 Ds.'

Or give sonic big boobies and made it Sonic 34DD.

So Donkey Kong Country wasn't a 2D platformer?

It's not "100% 3D" if you take a 3D object and flatten it into a 2D image, then use a series of 2D images to define your animation sets. Whether hand drawn or not, it's still a 2D sprite/pixel.

I'm almost positive Tails (and possibly Knuckles) will return for Sonic 4: Episode II.

I don't think Knuckles will come till the 3rd Episode, they are effectively remaking the original trilogy under Sonic 4.

I finally had the oppurtunity to play Sonic 4 last night, it looks amazing although Sonic's sprite is far to 3D - I'd like more hand drawn art please.

The physics aren't as bad as people said, but yeah he does stop immediately if you let go of the d-pad, seems like a relatively small bug to fix - I was playing on the iPhone so gameplay was bad as it is - but I've played the DS games and they really suck dimps for the most part have done a good job.

It's just weird seeing generations doing it better, I know generations is going through all the Generations and Sonic 4 is sticking closely to Generation 1 it still seems like a blunder.

Are they even still making more Sonic 4 stuff?
It's been a while since Episode 1 came out, and I didn't hear any E3 announcements....

I'm quite sure Episode II is still in development.

Seems a bit reduntant with Generations coming out now though doesn't it?
I mean the classic Sonic bits are pretty much what people were clamoring for in the first place. High def, really nice looking, 2d platforming Sonic.

I really enjoyed episode 1 personally. It just seems like they're moving on.

This is a big reason why I said SEGA absolutely should not have used the title of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. It was always going to fail in quality even if it had another year, the core elements were just too established to fix it enough. Now it exists forever and people are always reminded of it in the worst way.

It can be argued that in sales, it did not fail. However, I think it would have done pretty much as good regardless of it's name. The game sold because it was a 2D Sonic game that had basic gameplay with barely any story integration.

I still think Episode II is happening, and I think it will be a lot different in many regards, but that is going to make more people upset in the end most likely. Should just have made Sonic Colors the main series release and called Sonic the Hedgehog 4 something else entirely. This time, even Sonic Team knows they screwed up big time.

Only screw up I see up is timing... Sonic 4 was delayed 6 months right?

Then we have Sonic Generations had Sonic 4 all 3 episodes bundled together came out after Generations it might have should've worked, right now Sonic 4 is a bad remake of Sonic 1 with 3D polygons instead of Hand Drawn sprites.

I always planned on buying all 3 episodes bundled on a disk together.

"We named Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, so there will be an episode 2. Since this year is the 20th anniversary of Sonic we wanted to focus on Sonic Generations," Iizuka answered.

"It won’t be like Half-Life 2: Episode Three," I joked, but Iizuka didn’t get it. A bit embarrassed, I clarified and explained how there was a gap in years between Episode Two and Three.

"We don’t have a release date or anything," said Iizuka. "But, we can tell you it will be in the near future."
