Aliens meet Metroidvania in WayForward's upcoming DS game.

A couple a years ago, footage of a then-rumored to be canceled Aliens DS game emerged on the internet. The game was being developed by WayForward alongside Gearbox, the developers of Aliens: Colonial Marines. Now, the game has reemerged as Aliens: Infestation, a Metroidvania-style game for the Nintendo DS.

The game begins on the cruiser the U.S.S. Sulaco and then expands to other environments from the Aliens films. One of the main features of this game, as is the case with all games in the Metroidvania sub-genre, is exploration. In order to explorer further into the environments, you will first have to find different items and upgrades to remove many of the obstacles that stand in your way. These items range from key cards that are required for special doors, to the power loader, a personal mech that allows for the movement of heavy crates that block your way.

Unlike other games in the genre, the lives of your comrades become rather important to your own continued survival. You will be able to recruit up to twenty Colonial Marines, all with distinct traits of their own, to help you on your journey. However, once a member of your team is killed, there is no going back, leaving open the possibility of complete and utter failure if you do not ensure your recruits’ survival.

Death is not the only fate waiting for your marines. They may also be captured and cocooned to await an even more gruesome death in which they become hosts for the aliens. If this does happen, they can be saved, but only if they have not yet been impregnated. Just like in the Aliens movies, if you save a comrade that has the parasite within them, they won’t survive for very long until a new alien hatches from their corpse. The marines that you recruit and that die even affect the story’s progression, leaving open the possibility for a new experience with each subsequent play through.

The game also includes a wide array of weapons from the Aliens series that can be cycled through and upgraded by using the touch screen. The more weapons you can find, the better, as the game's combat is leveraged heavily on the player’s skill, being that your main enemies, the aliens, are both powerful and fast.

WayForward’s Aliens: Infestation is being published by Sega and will be infesting North America this October.

Aliens first proves to be the inspiration for Metroid only for Aliens to end up making a game inspired by Metroid. *head a splodes*

Apart from the fact Konami did their own Aliens game around the same time they unleased Super Contra to the arcades.
I like the way Sega is handling the timeline for their version of the aliens license. This game is a prequel to the events of Aliens colonial marines. So far we have,
ALIENS:infestation set after aliens
ALIENS COLONIAL MARINES set after the events of aliens and after infestation
ALIEN 3:THE GUN a sidestory set during the events of alien 3
ALIENS VS PREDATOR. 10 years after the events of alien 3.
