That Sega game you liked but everyone else...
« on: April 25, 2012, 09:07:33 pm »
So the topic of this thread is going to be about that Sega game you liked but everyone else either hated it or where critical on it. IE your buddies or the gaming community.
This is a tough choice for me between Sonic R and Sonic Adventure, both games suffer a lot of hate. I have to go with Sonic R though it suffered more hate and on a way larger scale.
I thought Sonic R was great and I clocked in a ton of hours back in 98; it was the Saturn Game of my Toys R Us. People complained about the controls I did not mind them to much. They way I looked at it was holy cow I can play a complete game with Sonic in 3D. The fact that there where multiple playable racers as well was awesome. The levels where all different also. The the secret racers brought it to a new level the robotic/evil version of the heroes was awesome. Metal Sonic who is a complete bad ass impressed me as well. And don't get me started on Metal Knuckles he needs to come back. The game gave plenty of reasons to replay with extras mode, and un-lockable's like Super Sonic and the last track. My eight year old mind was blown by wining poses of the racer's as well because each racer had a different pose. For a closing point I don't care what any one says the sound track was awesome, living in the city for the win.

So what is that Sega game you liked but everyone else did not?

I don't want to sound negative, but the thing is that I would have to name a lot or almost all SEGA games I played - only a selected few people I have met in my life care about them or are even aware of. SEGA's RPGs often get good reviews but nobody buys / knows them in the West.  ???

I never really got into Sonic R, but I enjoyed Sonic 3D back then. Sonic Adventure was somewhat disappointing. I loved the approach of Sonic Unleashed - even the Werehog - and the mix of extremely fast sections with slower platforming. And also the (action) RPG and adventure elements!  :D

I  would have to go with "Ecco The Dolphin" it was so bad that I found it good. I never got to beat the game but to me it was a fun game to play.  ;D

I think not many people love Gain Ground that much. To me it is still today a masterpiece. Both on the mastersystem and mega drive. Excellent multi co op game

I remember being verbally assaulted when I bought The Club. It's kinda weird. This happened when I was a regular on a major portuguese video game message board (it's offline now, though).

What's even weirder? I talked about Golden Axe: Beast Rider on there too. There were resonable arguments for and against, even though, it was largely considered a bad game.

Why I got crap over The Club is something that I'm still mulling over...

I think most people enjoyed Sonic Adventure when it came out. Game hasn't aged particularly well but I don't remember there being much hate for it at all back in the day.

Anyway I guess mine would have to be Sonic Unleashed. People didn't seem to like the game all that much but I loved it, better than Generations, to be honest, which the community seemed to rave over.

I don't remember much hate for the original Sonic Adventure and it's sequel on the Dreamcast. None that I can recall actually.

Even when Sonic Heroes was released (the one Sonic game that I really hate), there wasn't much hate for it. The tipping point was in 2005 and 2006.

It took Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 for the franchise to actually start to go under.

I think mine would be NiGHTS: Journey Of Dreams and Valkyria Chronicles II.

I had a really good time with Journey of Dreams. I thought the music was fantastic,  the gameplay was fun, and I really liked the idea of symbolism in the children's dream worlds.

I think Valkyria Chronicles II got a lot of flack from people who didn't have a PSP, and felt better about not being able to play it if they convinced themselves that it wasn't good.  The civil war story expanding on the big revalations near the end of the first game was a really interesting direction for the story to go. The gameplay was improved quite a bit from the first game, with the addition of the new character class upgrade system. I really hope SEGA releases the third game over here in some form.

Look at some of the recent reviews for Sonic Adventure.

Eh, I see it like people ripping on classic monster movies. At the time they were awesome and scary, now they're cheesy and cheap by comparison. Some think they're shit for that. Others love them for that AND can see them as they were originally seen with a bit of imagination.

Like, I totally get how SA1 could be deemed a bad game, but I look at it as a product of its time. I can still play it with the same eyes I had when it first released. Yeah, some stuff like Big and Amy are lame, but those aspects never overtook the franchise later on, so I can't hate on stuff like that. I love SA1 then and now.

I agree SA1 is great I have it on Dreamcast and 360. But I have to acknowledge that there is hate for it. So the point of this post is to defend games like it :D I do not want you all thinking I hate Sonic Adventure, (I love it) I just want to acknowledge the hate from the media and some of the gaming community....
