Preacher Movie now has no Director

I thought Sam Mendes would have done a good job.  :cry:
Now he's left to try and salvage whats left of the James Bond franchise after the Worse Movie Ever Made (aka Quantum of Solace) undid everything good about Casino Royale.

Now producer Neal Moritz (THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS) gives an update to Collider, pointing out that the director's chair is now unoccupied: "We now have a terrific script that John August wrote. We were originally talking with Sam Mendes about doing the movie
. Sam Mendes is going to go off and do the Bond movie, so there’s another director that we’re talking to right now."

"We’ve got a great script," Moritz continues. "John August wrote a script that I think is terrific. The hardest thing was with all the books-the Preacher books-was how to distill it down. And what he made the smart decision instead of trying to cram everything into one, there’s plenty of room for 2 or 3 movies. So that’s what he’s done and he’s done a really faithful adaption but made it probably more accessible to a broader audience right now. That movie’s definitely R-rated and it’s an amazing central character."

One thing scares me: More accesible to a broader audience... Not sure I like the sounds of that.

Hurm... I also wonder how he's chopped the series up to make a trilogy. I always felt Preacher was far too big for just one movie, but even dividing it up into three is a difficult prospect.

Hopefully someon on this forum has read this apart from me and George and has some interest in the movie. I know that Sanus is more of a 100 Bullets fan, but this might affect him as well, since I imagine that series would be equally difficult to transfer to another medium.

Eh, after Watchmen I'm in a different mindset. No movie can 'ruin' Preacher the comic, I'll still have my 9 volumes on my bookshelf and they'll still be as good as they ever were.

I would like to see them make a good movie out of Preacher for two reasons
1) It would only help the comic book increase in sales/popularity. Look at how many people read watchmen and how the sales shot through the roof. More recently, Kick-Ass has gotten a shot in the arm from the movie.
2) Who wouldn't want to see some of the great moments of the comic recreated on the big screen. It's just more of something I like.

I guess it could end up horrifically bad, like the King of Fighters Movie, but even then it won't affect the original material's quality (and will probably still make it more popular).

As for three movies being too long, really? Preacher runs for 75 Issues and theres very little that can be cut from it, I think it would be struggling to fit into even three movies myself.

Hmm, well. I think Watchmen was a terrible movie, I also think that people who saw it first, were put off the comic or were sceptical at reading it, I think the same can be said for Preacher.... its deep, and I think the movie will have to change certain aspects to keep the "regular" viewer wanting to watch it.

Kick-Ass was changed, some say for the better... I disagree... I even saw someone tell another person to watch the movie before reading the comic because the comic spoils the movie.... Thats bullshit.

I thought it was around 65 issues.... maybe I missed specials or something... but then I read it along time ago... I think it would be better suited to a tv show in that case.

From what i can see there were... 8 or so Story arcs?

a tv series could easily fit that into 4 seasons... thinking about it now, maybe 3 isnt enough movies... but then if there are 75 issues... in which case im guessing there are spinoffs I have not read... then they should not be included in the movie...

...I have 5 of I believe 9 books.... most people dont want to read 9 books :/ ... lets be honest.

I can't imagine this film coming out well.

1. I think they will try to hard for the fans, confusing new people to the series
2. they will try to hard alienating fans and starting fan boy rants the world over.

Watchmen was a terrible movie? I quite liked it, but then again I might have just been in awe seeing it at Imax for the first time, seeing the comic come to life.

Now, some people may have been put off reading the comic by the movie, but those people never would have read it anyway. If you look at the sales during the time, Watchmen shot up the charts to be Amazon's number 1 selling book, I even saw people reading it on the train. There were people who never read comics before picking it up and reading it as well. I have no doubt in my mind that the movie did far more good for the comic than harm.

I think it's probably the same with Kick-ass, I know that my friend saw a big display of all the Kick-ass books at a major bookstore the other day, I can just about guarantee that never would have happened if it weren't for the movie.

As for the amount of comics, it's 66 issues of the main story plust 9 One-Shots and a mini-Series. As you said you could probably cut out most of those for a movie, since they mostly give background but aren't really essential.

Have you read the full series though, or just those first 5 issues. As for people not wanting to read the 9 volumes, I disagree. The series has quite a big following it seems, and other series like 100 Bullets and Transmetropolitan ran for even longer.

Well anyway, as for a movie, I wouldn't mind too much if it didn't follow the comics to the letter, but so long as they capture that feel and style of it. I want to see the movie and get that feeling of a modern day western mixed with all that American legend and myth.

Errr what was wrong with Watchmen? I thought it did rather well. Sure some changes, but it was focusing on the characters and not really putting happy faces on them for kids. Look at the Batman and Punisher films, they either try too much to 'ignore' the characters and move on to action or tone it down like the Batman movies (with the nips).

As for Watchmen, I felt it was trying to hard. I found it boring and I loved the comic.

You should put a snooker ball in a sock, then go to your friends house and get them back!

Also, I don't think that 9 volumes of comics is really that hard to get through, it's not like reading 9 books. I find that you can breeze right through a TBP of a comic.

Great, more bad news for the DC Comics to Film frontlines...

So much for all that fan fare about DC Comics finally making it big to the big screen.

I mean Lobo is currently dead, The Losers and Jonah Hex did not impress Warner Brothers(according to this).

But then again, I think the problem lies with the producers, especially Akiva Goldsman.

The only thing that seems to be working out is Human Target and the upcoming Green Lantern movie.
