We’ve learned that Shouzou Kaga, the creator of the Fire Emblem series, is developing a new indie (doujin) game. The last Fire Emblem game he worked on was Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, which you can view pictured above.

He announced the news over on his personal blog, and that he was going to use the Sapphire Soft developed engine, SRPG Studio. Once completed, the game will be distributed for free, although he did make a point in saying this is also to show his support of freeware tools.

As Kaga’s resources are limited, he is opening up the floodgates to his fans to aid him in potential development resources, although he lists a few caveats for any assets he might use. For one, they have to be able to be modified by Kaga to fit the game’s style, rights will belong to Sapphire Soft, while the author retains all other ownership, must conform to Sapphire Soft’s T&C, must be open to be used in potential sequels, and finally – must not infringe on copyrights.

This is certainly exciting to see Kaga returning to developing games after a decade-plus hiatus – although what kind of game do you think Kaga will end up making?

Hmm, this seems to be a trend. Even Igarashi of Castlevania fame seems to be going indie to make a new Castlevania-like title.

I like it, it allows the creators to make their niche games now that publishers can't afford to take the risks on it. I hope this becomes a trend, I'd love to see more old hands make their love projects like this.

My favorite thing about this is that the names behind these games get a ton of prominence as a result of the effort. Normally no one gives a damn about the creator when they talk about old games, but then the creator comes up with a new game that's LIKE those old games, and everyone speaks their name.

It's a good side-effect.
