All those Sakura Wars anime DVDs, any worth watching?
« on: January 25, 2011, 01:00:46 pm »
So I've been really getting into Sakura Wars 5 on the PS2, and hit wikipedia to read up on the series. I discovered this list of OVA and TV series DVDs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sa ... television
and in turn checked to see what was on Netflix. They have quite a lot of DVDs, but since I can only get one DVD at a time, I wanted a recommendation as to which are worth watching.

Here's what they have:
Sakura Wars Broadcast Series - 2002

Sakura Wars TV (6 discs) - 2003

Sakura Taisen: Vol. 2: Ecole de Paris - 2004

The Sakura Taisen series is really hard to recommend, but it is safe to assume that if you liked what you have seen already you will probably like it all.

I did not watch too much of the animated series, but I really appreciated the quality of the animation, some of the best I have seen in Japanese-made stuff.

Even though it takes place way later in the series, I think the movie is a good way to start off, and I liked it the most. It leads up to the fifth game anyways, so that could be cool for you.

Cool, thanks for the info! Yeah, the fifth game kicked off with Shinjiro briefly talking to the woman from the previous games and I felt totally lost. I was hoping in lieu of English versions of 1-4, hopefully the animes could help fill in some of the backstory.

I did note that an anime sequel to the fifth game was released, so that'll be cool to see after completing the game.

I actually watched all most all the ST anime series. For myself I prefer the Sakura Taisen OVAs by ADV Films because I felt that the characters voices fit and great side story telling from the games. Oh and how [spoiler:3c2bl49x]Sakura saved Maria's @$$ from being shot by reflecting bullets with her sword in the 2nd OVA[/spoiler:3c2bl49x]

And I guess Sakura Taisen 3 OVA was decent too and the Movie was great, but I didn't like the characters voices in it though since I was use with the VAs from ADV Films.

I hate to say this as well but, I didn't like the TV series because of the quality and you will laugh when you hear Kanna voice and I'll let you find out yourself.

So I recommend the OVA/Brodcast series.

Sakura 5 is the worst on the series, and has the worst story ever! They made a semi-sequel to that, but only in anime, and the American team has to beat the evil, now, from Egypt.

Shinjirou's mother makes a cameo on it.

I have really not watched all the animes made, but if you want to follow the story, you really need to begin with the start... err... the first one XD

 They are pretty old now.

By the way, my favourite characters are the Italian girl and the French heroine, Erica Fontaine. :P
