What to do with an old VGA monitor?
« on: September 28, 2012, 08:33:43 am »
Hey, guys, this is something that I need a little help on what to do?

You see, there have been some changes in my bedroom. I retired my 14-year old desktop PC and repaired a somewhat usable Packard Bell Laptop to fill in it's place. My old PC had an Asus LCD monitor in which I used to play some of my 360 games through the VGA cable.

But after I got my 23-inch LCD TV with an HDMI port, it's made my VGA monitor seem redundant.
I've been pondering some options, namely getting a special VGA/TV box and turn it into a TV.

What do you guys think?

If you have a Dreamcast and some light guns why not use the CRT monitor as a dedicated Dreamcast unit. That's what I did when I had an old CRT lying around at my old place. I kind of wish I still had one now. :(

That's a good idea, except that unfortunately I never had a Dreamcast VGA cable.
I have plans to get a cheap PS2 or a PS3, if lightining strikes and I get one in a fire sale or something.

Right now it's just takin' up space...

Looks like I found a few interested customers on OLX.pt. I'm going to sell it.

Too late. I sold it to a Tech Support guy a few minutes ago.
This discussion is over!

I think we should leave this open in case any other members have old VGA monitors.

Why are we all afraid of giving up this thread? We could just sell it on OLX.pt

True, as useless as they are for entertainment purposes (ie. LCD TV being affordable and more commonplace and nobody plays with that massive VGA cable anymore), the regular LCD monitor still plays a vital role in tech support and other areas.

Tech Support:
Example, if you smash the screen on your laptop, it's going to be a bit of a problem to fix it, right, simple hook it up to an LCD screen via the VGA output and salvage the data.

Software Engineering
This is pretty common, a lot of big shot programmers require two or more screens to check various tasks.

Use it as a regular TV
Get a Set Top Box that has VGA input(which are quite rare these days) and a couple of speakers and you might get something good out of it.
