There must/will be alternatives, George.

For instance, I REALLY wanted an iPod Nano. I installed iTunes to see what I was up against, as it's mandatory to use it to transfer content (as far as I know anyway). I started hating iTunes. I really HATE iTunes.

I ended up getting an equivalent player from Sony for less money, more functionality and connectivity on any operating system (it acts like a USB stick). The proprietary port still sucks though. I'm pretty happy with my purchase. The irony is that Evil Dogma makes it.

I'm curious, what do you hate about iTunes?  I've heard this before from other people.  I actually paid money for iTunes back when it was shareware, before Apple bought it, it was Cassidy & Greene's Soundjam MP, back in 1999.  It was quite a bit different then, but I've owned every permutation of it.  The only issue I ever had was just getting used to the idea of playlists.  I wanted to find the actual file, in the folder and organizational system that I set up, and play the MP3 file.  Once I learned to let go, that I have better things to do with my time than get OCD with my files, I have enjoyed it.

 I think the current iteration is pretty bloated though.  It could use to be re-written from the ground up.  I've heard the Windows version is faster, because it's not as old.

What I used was the Windows version. I found it ridiculously slow. I'm a foobar2000 user, that might have something to do with my impression... Which is funny, because iTunes seems to run quite fast (or fluid) on my friends' Macs. The interface felt clumsy, I don't like the concept of a music library at all and the program seemed to force me to do so. I prefer simplicity, when I want to listen to an album I usually look for its directory using the file explorer and then load that album's playlist onto the player. The speed was my main issue though. I understand my computer isn't that new but I wasn't expecting a music player to behave so slowly. Ah well.

I'm using Zune software, only cuz i'm lazy to set up Foobar like I used to like it. But  I agree, Foobar is the best media player out there.

I use iTunes on my mac. iTunes on PC always screws up everything with me..
It's fast, organized, and I like the automated playlists. I also absolutely LOVE the new Genius playlists!

There are other programs to manage iPods, but I don't like them as much.
Though I think iTunes is needing a reboot.

Hench, Flash is good, but I think that Superman is a better hero overall.

I like iTunes,but then again I have been using it since I got my iPod mini in 2004 so am probably just used to it and have never tried any alternatives.

The only thing I don't like (which is more about the store itself) is that I bought the first season of the Ricky Gervais show audiobook on my iPhone, nwhen my phone was downloading it I lost internet connection at work and the download corrupted.
When I got home I tried to re-download it on my Mac but I was informed that doing so would involve being charged again.

Customer support was great and added a free version to my download queue in iTunes but it shouldn't be so awkward.

I've got 3889, organized by artist, then Album release date.  I really like the coverflow view.  You have to spend some time making sure they all have covers, though.

I have "over" 60gbs of music.

I don't like how it does not let you organize it via Artist only. I have too many albums to go through each one. It has songs, which is worse. Maybe I'm not used to iTunes, but as a organizer, it needs more choices and options.


Cover flow is a nice 'look' but does not make organizing easier. Its just cotton candy.

I have 14,785 files, all organized of course.
