I now own a Master System - suggest some games!
« on: June 30, 2014, 03:49:11 pm »

At Too Many Games (which went great by the way - AJ, Kori, David, and myself had a great time hanging out and hosting the panel) I picked up the final SEGA console that I did not own: The Master System

I guess it took me so long as I wanted to focus on obtaining games for the consoles I already have before getting something new. Thus far I own the above titles (that's After Burner cut off in the first pic), and I want to get others including Out Run, Alien Syndrome, Zaxxon, Fantasy Zone, Zillion as well as the early franchise games like Shinobi, Alex Kidd, and Phantasy Star.

But I know there are other more obscure games, like Ghost House and Quartet, which I want to own.

I wanted to know what games you all would suggest, what are your favorites or what obscure titles are worth picking up?

Shinobi, Virtua Fighter the Animation, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, and Alex Kidd in Shinobi World. Fun games to play and in Shinobi, you have a health gauge and more weapons in your arsenal.

You know what? I ask myself this question. Why couldn't SMS games in the west have beautiful Box art like the Japanese versions? I mean why, SEGA, why? They had to wait until the Genesis days to have something great???

The Master System is a joy to play with... and I happen to like the minimalist Western box art! Here are some of my favorites. Note that the ones that have 16-bit counterparts, the Master System versions are actually different enough and good enough to be worth checking out, and aren't just lesser ports of the same games.

Shooters: Power Strike, R-Type, Fantasy Zone, Fantasy Zone II, Cloud Master
Platformers: Shinobi, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Kenseiden, Master of Darkness, Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse, Land of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse, Sonic 1 & 2
Action with RPG elements: Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, Golvellius, Zillion
Two Player Co-op: Rambo, Time Soldiers, Double Dragon, Rampage
Light Phaser Games: Gangster Town (try it dual wielding Light Phasers in two-player mode with each one running through a Rapid Fire Adapter!)
3D Games: Maze Hunter 3D, Space Harrier 3D
Sega Cards: My Hero, Teddy Boy

Get alladin. Get through the first run and jump stages and you'll see what i mean. Unless nostalgia is playing games with me, i think it's better than the genesis game.

Also alex kidd the lost stars. One of the weirdest games i ever played but oozes with SEGA charm. That's what I love about master system. It's the console where all that SEGA charm started and it was great from day one.

Shinobi is great, and R-Type's fantastic as well.

I of course recommend the Sonic games, particularly Sonic 1. Enduro Racer is absolutely sublime too.
Rastan's also pretty damn good, and yeah I recommend Fantasy Zone too.

I don't get the 'hype' over Psycho Fox though. It's really shoddy in the control department and the mechanics feel way off.

Thanks for the recommendations all! I also have Spy vs. Spy on my radar, and I was wondering if anybody here has played Dynamite Dux?

Astro Warrior is a fun little shooter and should be relatively affordable. Definitely pick up Power Strike if you can, as that's based on the Aleste series of shooters and those are usually really good from my experience. Unfortunately, the better games are also typically much more rare and expensive.

Choplifter, Donald's Lucky Dime Caper, Double Dragon, and Fantasy Zone II: Tears of Opa Opa are all fun games. Not really exclusive for the most part, but fun. I really wouldn't recommend the 8-bit arcade conversions but you've already got some of the worst, so...

It's a fun, cartoony brawler that's probably intended for younger kids... it's quite easy. But it's got really nice graphics and some creative enemies. I recommend Ninjabearhug's Youtube series, The SMS Quest... he's attempting to play the entire SMS library while providing some commentary, Gamecenter CX-style. Here's his take on Dynamite Dux... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzteOrNDEHA

That is how I feel like, when I look at these box arts. If those box art was my opposite sex, I could frisk them. It looks like gold.  I could feel that airbrush.

Some of the more serious games, looks like they gave them a better art job. No equality in respect for game releases. Look at FANTASY ZONE......for example.
