Lets keep with the title topic please Happy Cat. If you guys want to talk about Sonic or the deal between SEGA and Nintendo do it in another topic, maybe in the sonic boom topic, but not here. Thanks.
This is about Segasammy and sonic is part of that as he is the premiere character Sega used to make a deal with Nintendo. So its hardly off topic. Its part of the bigger picture of inter company relations.

A mutual screw lol. For someone who was excited with the anouncement and validation of my console purchase when sonic lost world and the deal was anounced, I feel more burned by SEGA in this. By now it just feels like a franchise on a leash doing its owner a favour by force. Doesnt matter if backed by other's money or not, it gives a horrible impression to me as a SEGAfan of what value they see in their assets. Which looks mostly like $ I Assume. And none of <3


By now they might as well sell off the IP since it aint gonna be worth **it in a couple of years. Far from what it used to. And since they've made losses plus downscaling, it doesnt bode well for anything I thin. Well except  for nagoshi's child yakuza. I still like you nagoshi, but you gotta step it up with the other franchises. Reform sonicteam please!

I think Nagoshi and Iizuka will have something great planned for next gen consoles. Probably been working on it for a long time now considering how many years it's been. Nagoshi is a smart man, I'm sure he wants the Sonic franchise to be quality, too.

The fortunate thing about Sonic Boom is it's limited to the Wii U, a console barely anyone owns, and won't harm Sonic's name too much. If you haven't noticed it's already kinda of been forgotten about aside from the occasional discussion about it on GAF and Sonic communities. The mainstream media doesn't even care about it anymore after their initial reviews. Really easy for SEGA to just sweep the game under the rug and pretend it never existed. It's not like Sonic 06 where everyone is talking about it. SEGA was never expecting the game to sell much anyways according the latest SEGA Sammy Financial report, only estimated 300k Wii u copies to sell.

Well considering how protective Iizuka is over the Sonic brand or at least his ideal vision of the Sonic brand, I think there is plenty of care. If only for what Iizuka feels is the right way forward for Sonic.

The Sonic the Hedgehog brand has sold/downloaded over 150 million times, this figure does not include titles with Sonic as part of the cast (IE Mario & Sonic, Sonic and SEGA Allstars Racing etc.) which would probably push it over 200 million if included. Other notable achievement is Sonic Dash has been downloaded over 78 million times, probably more downloads than ALL of SEGA's mobile offerings combined and more than most successful mobile games, this brand is far from being "worth shit." it's probably the second most valued brand behind Mario in terms of platformers.

SEGA's consumer division didn't make a loss, you are wrong in that assumption, they managed an operating profit of 900 million yen and seems Alien is selling more than expected. Forecasts are down but due to the Sonic Boom fiasco.

SEGA's development workforce was 1,500 in 2005, currently in 2014 it sits at 2,600+ they've downsized their publishing capabilities not their developing capabilities as they look to digital for the future.

They still hold multiple major franchises, it might not interest you but;

SEGA West
Total War Series (2 million+)
Sonic the Hedgehog Series (2 million+)
Football Manager Series (1 million+)
Company of Heroes Series (1 million+)
Spiral Knights (?)

SEGA Japan
Yakuza Series (500k+)

Yeap estimates/based on first year results.

Company of Heroes 1 for example has sold over 4 to 5 million I believe? But for the second one I do believe that the only figure we have is 680,000 units for a 9 month period.

The Sonic the Hedgehog titles easily sell more than 2 million in it's first 6 months of sales, it's not hard to guess that the series probably shifts 3 to 4 million in total (Maybe 5 million at a push.) but with no additional figures from SEGA I can't say that with utmost certainty. I do know however that Sonic games tend to sell for a long time, Sonic Generations for example is still selling in America and Europe (Infact Amazon.com has it as their 430th best seller.)

Total War number comes from the top 100 best selling Steam game list a while back, I remember seeing multiple Total War games having over 2 million users attached to playing them.

Football Manager is probably closer to 1.5 million, maybe 2 million. I'm not even including the iOS version which sold an additional 500,000 for the 2013 edition.

Ok was just curious.

The COH 4 million number is series total, before Sega acquired relic. Post acquisition the 1 million number isn't unreasonable.

The TW number I just wanted to revisit, because, Empire alone did 810K in it's first year, and Rome 2 did 1 million in 3 months. This isn't counting Napoleon, Shogun 2 or Shogun's 2 major expansion packs. Not to mention Medieval II.

Not sure about FM, but I imagine it too has racked up a few million if it consistently tops the charts upon each release.

The report states that their games consumer divison which covers many different companies to TMS and Monza..or whatever they are called animation to Sega Toys and Sega networks, package games/ PC. They all had good results. SAnd that's not including the new company Atlus which had a good return this year also..unlike a few others i can mention...

It doesnt have to be nintendo. Thinking about it, maybe sumo digital should be given the chance. I got steve lycett on steam and he told me some time ago that he'd love to. Aside from character design and animations they seem pretty capable of implementing ideas. With sonicteam I get the feeling gameplay wise they do have the right idea, but they lack critical thinking towards mechanics and skill of implementation. The spammable spindashes in both lost world and classic sonic in gunyrations are great examples of terrible design. and then there's the effort and fail in trying to get the feel of pinball physics. This is just bad imo. Someone else should be able to do it much better.


I wish they got a chance instead of big red button. What a waste


To keep it ontopic. Since quantity has declined, it would probably be the best if SEGA focussed more on quality

Crazy T...i'm talking about company buy out and mergers..not who should make the next Sonic game..you got it twisted. Even though i agree that Sumo Digital should be given MORE Sega contracts...they're responsible for two of the highest sonic games in recent times and their games for Sega have always sold well.

Seems we got the right idea there. Selling the IP seems like stupid suggestion now when its as simple as letting a great team have their hands on it for a change. Its because so far most of the chosen teams have been crap is why i unconsiously forget that it can work out well. Not gonna lie tho, next time there will be another partnership id rather have SEGA give nintendo the permission to let one of their teams to prove or disprove itself. Would at least put the curiosity to rest.

I'd like to ask something else. How well do the kid demographic games perform on ps4 and xbox one? Seeing as Aki is saying thst a sonic multiplat could still easily do 2 million, i kind of doubt that at the moment. The installbases are not very diverse. I think a good indication would be how well little big planet 3 is performing on the ps4. Because if not than i expect the next sonic to be a cross gen game for the 360 and ps3 as well

I've noticed a decline in that type of games sales on consoles in general. It could be that the whole "mobile took a huge chunk of market share from consoles" could be true in the case of these type of games. Unless you're minecraft

Sonic could do well PS4/Xbone for sure. I'd say the less family-friendly games are avaible, the more will the plattformers stick out and have a chance to do well.

And the audience still wants more good Sonic games, loads of people on Steam want Sonic Generations 2. No need for Nintendo, which is never gonna happen. They aren't the kind to take someones franchise, and show them "how to do better".
Hell Miyamoto and Naka met in 2005, right when the Franchise was in the dumpster with Shadow the Hedgehog, and Miyamoto wasn't in "disgust" or something similar, when the 2 franchises collaborated, with pretty much a contrast in quality at that time.
