I think he is talking specifically about SEGA Japans output, SEGA Europe are doing pretty well all round.

I think this is one area I struggle to see from America's side. Here in the UK you see, I think there's still a lot of love for SEGA. Sure, there's been some flops across the board, but no company gets it completely right.

I think SoA needed a leash earlier on, I understand they needed to do their own thing, but they were responsible for a number of major projects that failed and it costed them.

I know the Western branch wasn't receptive to Phantasy Star, Virtua Fighter, Binary Domain and Hatsune Miku, they only complied because Japan wanted those games to be released here.

Sorry I don't have any vidoes at hand (Go figure with it being Japan only) but you could research into it, the whole game is set in the red light district.

Sure but there's a lot of revisionist history with stuff like Yakuza (Let's not forget, a reason for the delay was also getting it past Sony who didn't allow Japanese dub only games on their platform) and Virtua Fighter I feel.


This is disheartening to hear, especially with the history/value of both PS and VF to SEGA Worldwide, I don't understand how they would react that way, especially since both have active communities always hoping for more.  Binary Domain, is tricky one, especially since again it's a big title, why not work together to make it succeed (or is because they wanted to be more autonomous?).  Miku is the biggest surprise consider it's basically printing money for them for relative low work?


But boy, I sometimes looks at the VF group on Facebook and they are particularly nasty at SEGA a number of times, some of it kind of unreasonable.


Then what would the point be of giving an interview to Famitsu, especially when he could have just said "Look we're really awesome, see that Chain Chronicle, over $100 million, $100 MILLION!" it's one thing if he was hyping up his own products, it's another to say they haven't been doing as well and they need to improve on what they're capable of.

This isn't a random interview given at E3 about Sonic going back to his roots but something about the sort of direction the company is going in. Definitely we will see further expansion into China and maybe thanks to Atlus' involvement, further localisations.


I do admit I like that he of all people came out and said it. Sort of refreshing when any company comes out and admit to an actual problem.  Again, I hope it's not just lip service.


Just keep your expectations in check, don't expect Crazy Taxi 4, Shenmue 3, Skies of Arcadia 2, Streets of Rage 4 etc but maybe a few more localisations like 7th Dragon and a few C tier franchises/IPs and you might be happy.

Yep I'd love to read it, I'm sure there was a lot more than just a few snippets like we're getting.


I'm always open for more localizations and yea, it's obvious that this will take some time...I just want more great games, whether it be a new IP or a fan favorite one coming once in a while (which would definitely be appreciated) and of course they give it a good marketing push.


That and I want them to finally bring out PSO2.  I'm this close to just find a VPN and try the English patch again.

Kind of surprising, as Sega did put in the hard yards for Final Showdown. They did a fair bit of work to promote and support that game.


Which Facebook group for VF are you a part of? Bear in mind a lot of internet VF fans are just crazy.

UK (And Europe to an extent) loves SEGA, its their strongest region unsurprisingly. Infact Atlus did an interview saying how surprised they were with how successful SEGA is here.

I guess their problem was they considered them too Japanese, I mean I wouldn't be shocked.

The kicker was SEGA America/Europe were more interested in Alien: Colonial Marines than Binary Domain. Absolutely awful thinking from the top people at the company.

To be honest, the hardcore of the hardcore fanbase is always crazy. It's unfortunate but I think most regular Virtua Fighter fans won't spit such bile.

I'm always open for more localizations and yea, it's obvious that this will take some time...I just want more great games, whether it be a new IP or a fan favorite one coming once in a while (which would definitely be appreciated) and of course they give it a good marketing push.

Same here, I've always said even in 2013 that it would take time for SEGA to get their house in order again. 2013 was a massive drop in quality, but 2014 was a big improvement and I feel 2015 will be another step up.

It's no surprise really. Nintendo didn't give a hoot about the UK in the early days. It wasn't intill SEGA came did they stand up and notice, but it was to late by then.

My current issue with Sega Japan isn't bad games, it's non-existent games.

I think he's talking about the bad licensed games and certain Sonic games...again, sadly we don't have the full interview. I'd imagine he question was about the Sega America layoffs

Well, yeah the arcade and 3ds version.

I'm not sure how much the arcade differ from the PS3 versions.

Which I find to be a dumb/silly excuse on their part as they at least had global appeal until they dropped the ball in the later years with the lack of support.

No kidding, it sounds to me like they wanted their own shooter to succeed, even when they kept sinking money into that project which later turned out to be mis-managed.  I don't know, maybe instead of working against one another and the West had the interest of working together, things might have turned out differently.  Did they also not care about Vanquish?

Maybe I mis-interpreted things, but when news broke about SEGA shifting focus to Digital/PC/Mobile, I saw a lot of anger (in the comments at least) towards SEGA...then again, this was coming from the RocketNew24 article.

My current issue with Sega Japan isn't bad games, it's non-existent games.

Honestly he could be referring to Sonic 06 for all we know.  The point is the brand isn't what it used to be.  Whether that refers to a dearth of releases or low quality in general.  They've lost the trust of the consumer; that much can be felt all through.

Pretty sure it also means how they do business with their outsourced projects and quality of released products. Atlus as a developer doesn't put out much titles, but they go around looking at indie games and pick them up for publishing and have become profitable this way as well.

Atlus has been really good at reconizing talent and games that could get a good following. For example they published Demon Souls in America, 3D Dot Game Heroes (300k in America alone, Yakuza does 40kish?) and a few others. There is a lot that SEGA can learn from Atlus to make their core fans happy, ask Atlus fans if their happy right now and most will rant about Persona 5 for hours.

Seems to be happening across SEGA now.

Alien: Isolation (4+ years of development)
Sonic Next (3+ years of development)
Total War: Warhammer (3+ years of development)
Dawn of War 3 (? but I'd imagine this has been in development or at least production since they purchased Relic.)

Really hope it pays off.
