I gave archery a shot for the first time last night :D.
I've always been interested in trying it out, but really had no idea how to get into it. My great grandpa made me a makeshift one out of a twig and some twine, but it was just for messing around in the backyard, and didn't work all that great.
Anyway, a friend of mine (that I met through martial arts), is really into archery and she invited me out to a local shooting range. I got to try out a compound bow, wich was super intimidating, but pretty easy to aim with. It's one of those ones with the pulleys, sights, and a counterbalance.
I tried out a recurve one too, wich was super fun. It's basically just the curved piece of wood, and you rest the arrow on the back of your hand. It's a lot tougher to aim accurately, because you don't have sights or anything, but it's much easier to pull back on the string.
With the compound bow, I used this little trigger mechanism that would clamp onto the string, so it was easy to pull back, and release. I just used my fingers for the recurve bow, so my fingertips are still sore today.
