I don't know much about politics, but if I would want anyone taking care of anything, Barroso is the best man I can think of. An intelligent and wise man. A natural leader.

Too bad he's governing at the EU. He could be really useful for Portugal.

That was such a job well done he ended up running away. He's got the stones of a leader!

Comparing two and half years of right wing government seems unfair...to the rightists. I mean, if the leftists fucked up so bad before what prevented the rightists to set things right? It makes no sense to me. The power was there, the majority was there (albeit with non elected people).

The rightists took their time, but they finally elected someone who wasn't attached to a lot of progress, true, but also to ten years of mismanagement of European funds.

I like him, he even apologises.

He was prime minister before running away, excusing himself with the prosecution of a high position among the European Union. If that would make a difference for this country. What the fuck are you on? And the sentence that sank his ship was:

O país está de tanga!

Never forget.

"Fucked up so bad", is the understatement of the decade.
The imminent collapse of the portuguese economy is what Sócrates is aiming for and PPC better damn well do something about it.

Of course, unfortunatly(if that's where you're getting at), the problems in Portugal's mindset go way beyond the Left vs Right battle:

Apart from the far-left parties (which have an electoral weight of close to 20% and hold radical anti-capitalistic views) there is a large social-democratic consensus in Portuguese society favouring Keynesian  views that is shaken only by the prospect of imminent financial collapse. The Keynesian consensus pervades most political, media and academic contexts and leads to a dangerous state of denial and to blaming external agents (greedy faceless speculators, the US, the ECB or even Germany) for the crisis.

Update: And another thing, if PPC is apologizing now, then he shouldn't have the agreement with Sócrates in the first place. Now he has blood in his hands.

I never said things were good and that I agreed to our PM's delusional state of mind. There are unemployed people inside this house. I know the drill. I said the right wing did nothing about the overall state of affairs and that is true. When they got to power in 2002 all they did was blame the other party for everything that was going on, acting as if they were still opposition, instead of, at the very least, show an optimistic view towards the future. It helped sink their ship and gave Durão Barroso a good excuse to run for the EU Commission. It will be prestigious for Portugal, people said at the time. Yeah, right. Shove the prestige. The only thing I saw them do right was hunt down tax evaders.

I'm not sure if PPC is starting the right way. He did agree to the tax increase (leading to his apology) however something tells me it will be very hard for next year's budget to be approved.

Please. I took it from your "f***-ups of over 14 years of PS dominated government" expression. Not everything was bad since the current PR left the job of PM. If you really can't see any good done in so long... Heh, there's nothing I can do about it.

Sorry to hear.
But true for PSD-PP blaming each other, but playing the blame game and "the country never advanced because of pessimism" became Socrate's slogans and he became severly hostile towards people who dissagreed with him, oppostion, journalists and bloggers.

And true, Santana Lopes was also a total jerk for getting Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa out of RTP.

Again, truer words have never been spoken.

Consider yourself lucky, no one is as bad as the Conservatives.

Cancelled the third runway in Heathrow, announced they will build nuclear power plants without spending any public money (Despite there not being any power plant that wasnt made without public money...) 70 odd million cut in police and far less employed, 22 billion pounds to help line the pockets of the well off and rich, the Olympic budget being cut, Home Information Packs abolished which has already taken away 10,000 jobs and trying to pass a law that means you can only vote a no confidence against the government with a 55% majority, instead of being able to vote no confidence with a majority of just one. All within two days of being in power.

The age of Austerity is well and truly back for Britain. I expect far worse in a week or two times.

Let's not forget that the Tories still believe that unemployed people simply do not wish to work.

Also expect the BBC to be destroyed, wonder what promises Cameron made to Murdoch a few months ago? (apart from in exchange for his soul of course, but he has Clegg's as a back-up)

seconded holy shit. What are the chances??

I have a request:
the next SEGAbits Swingin' Report Show needs a segment that kicks off with the above song and then features just Sharky & George discussing a SEGA mystery. Just needs to be 5 minutes, it would be hugely entertaining.
