Not sure how I feel about movies set in space, especially with Sonic Colours in mind.
I'd rather have a movie set on Mobius instead.
Outer space adventure is cheaper to make than new world since the background setting is usually in the spaceship or limited area.
A whole new world that is not earth would requires a lot of CGI if the new world's very different from earth.

Why would you want to make a sequel of a movie that's failed to reach its break-even point.
True. But Sonic films are usually fighting something that belongs to WB or Disney.

Birds of Prey (instead of Batman), Morbius (instead of Spider-Man) and Mufasa (instead of Lion King).
Avengers is a different scale of level.
