Preparing for Phantasy Star IV
« on: December 26, 2010, 10:56:54 pm »
I just recently started up a new playthrough of Phantasy Star IV. I have always wanted to beat the game, but for some reason I just never have. This time I am really motivated too though, and I want to make a three part article on my site about the whole thing, because that is the kind of weird guy I am.

Now, the game is a bit on the hard side, so any help or opinions on how I should go through the game would be much appreciated. I am playing the Xbox 360 Genesis Collection version this time instead because I have no idea how strong the battery on the Genesis' version's cart is and if I lost 30+ hours of work I would be devastated. Also, save states might come in handy, but I do not want to take too much advantage of it.

I have two fairly major issues so far. Firstly, the menus are kind of a mess and the items, armor and magic are not described when you scroll over them, meaning you have to buy them or use them just to find out what they do first. Good thing I played so much PSO and Phantasy Star I or else I would be totally clueless when it comes to Monomate, Dimate and stuff like Foi.

The other issue is that apparently the only item that revives people is an incredibly rare and expensive Moon Dew, worse yet is after a fight is over when someone dies, they are still dead (most RPGs restore them back to at least 1hp). Is there a magic ability I can learn that brings people back to life or anything? It seems like it is going to be a major, major issue for me later on.

I am enjoying the game so far, even with the pretty rough difficulty. The game has a pretty crazy amount of content in some ways, and I totally forgot about the SEGA references! Golden Axe and Sonic stuff is common, but maaaaan did my face light up when I saw the Ecco reference!

Thanks for any help!

I haven't read your entire post but good for you!

I played it on an emulator (it was my first rpg discovered accidentally), and the 2nd one was Arcadia could it be more convenient?

Advice: on the emulator I played at 4 times the actual game speed, and basically did hundreds of easy random battles. That is what I recommend.

I'll read the rest of your post later.

I promised myself that I would do this a long time ago. Still haven't sadly. Last time I came pretty far but it's always that my save gets lost somehow. -_-

Good luck man!! It's a great game, that's for sure.

Wouldn't it be pretty easy to replace the battery in the cartridge?  Or is it a type of battery that doesn't get made anymore?

Excuse me for not clarifying. I was talking about emulation on PC. I never owned the game originally.

Dont let nothin stop you from your goal, from this point on my friend, your only goal and meaning to life is to beat that game.

IF you dont, I'll hunt you down, and slap you with a rubber glove packed with babypowder.

Thanks for all of the advice!

I think I have a good system down now, where I use Chaz's escape ability to leave a dungeon anytime things get too rough. I was mostly just worried about characters dying in boss fights, especially someone who heals could be devastating.

I am about 7 hours in and am enjoying it so far, although some sections feel like they should be a bit shorter. I love how the androids heal too, that is a very unique spin on normal RPGs. I love how I will actually have to use my brain for every minute I play this game, very rare in RPGs, especially ones this old.

Does anyone know of a list somewhere online that tells what each ability and technique does?

Stolen Property from a dear friend of mine from GameFaqs
The Tome of Techniques is designed to list and describe each of the
techniques that are used in Phantasy Star IV.

*  Please note, although this section is complete, I did it almost
entirely by memory, and some values may be incorrect.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

                                 * * * *
                               White Magic

Res                TP Use: 3
---
This technique is the equivalent of a Monomate early in the game. As you
progress, this technique gets stronger. It starts out healing about 30HP,
but if you get a high enough level, it can heal over 100HP.

Gires              TP Use: 6
-----
This technique is the equivalent of a Dimate early in the game. As you
progress, like the Res, it gets stronger. It starts out healing around
90HP, but can get as high as 180HP.

Nares              TP Use: 9
-----
This technique is equal to a Trimate earlier in the game. As with the
other techs, this one gets stronger as you progress. It starts out healing
around 300HP, but it can get around 400HP.

Sar                TP Use: 12
---
This technique is a little weaker than a Res, but it affects all humanoid
party members. This technique is a very costly TP user, and should only be
used in dire times.

Gisar              TP Use: 24
-----
This technique is weaker than a Dimate, healing only around 60 or 70HP
when first learned. It is a hog for TP and should rarely be used.

Nasar              TP Use: 36
-----
Nasar is a weak version of Nares that affects all enemies. It is the best
Sar and should be used the most out of the three. Make sure you either
have Raja along, or lots of TP available.

Anti               TP Use: 2
----
Anti is the technique equivalent of an Antidote. It basically cures
poison. If you ever get poisoned, and the chance of that is very rare, use
this instead of an Antidote.

Rimpa              TP Use: 8
-----
Rimpa is used to cure paralysis. Use this only during battle, and only if
you are facing a monster that could actually paralyze you. If your entire
party is paralyzed in battle, you're done. If you're outside of battle
though, don't use it unless you are healing up before a boss.

Rever              TP Use: 12
-----
One of the most useful techniques, Rever is learned by an elite few party
members. Rever is the tech equivalent of a Moon Dew, and much less costly.
Use it whenever needed (i.e. Someone is unconscious).

Regen              TP Use: 36
-----
A good technique indeed, as it heals all status and gives the character
full HP, dead or alive, but I personally think it uses too much TPs. You
can get the same effect with a Rever and a Nares or two.

Arows              TP Use: 9
-----
For you who think this has to do with arrows, it doesn't. Notice, only
one R. This spell arowses, or wakes up, any sleeping characters. Useful in
some cases.

                                * * * *
                             Assist Magic

Shift              TP Use: 7
-----
Shift is a technique used for a strength increase. It seems to only be
temporary, and the effect varies from character to character. Chaz-level
attackers won't get much of a boost, but Rune-level attackers will get a
hell of a boost.

Saner              TP Use: 8
-----
Saner is a technique that is more useful than it initially seems. This
tech is used to temporarily increase your quickness in battle. This is
used best when you have a bunch of slow characters (Rune, Raja) in your
party against quicker enemies.

Deban              TP Use: 5
-----
Deban is one of the most useful techniques in the game. It is basically a
shield of light that cuts damage very considerably to all members in your
party. This technique is especially useful against the Dark Force series.

Hinas              TP Use: 4
-----
Hinas isn't really an Assist-type magic, but it fits best into this group
out of the three, so that's why I put it here. Hinas is your basic
Escapipe technique that lets you escape dungeons upon usage.

Ryuka              TP Use: 10
-----
Ryuka, like Hinas, isn't really Assist-type, but it fit best into here.
Ryuka is the technique embodiment of the Telepipe, at a smaller cost. With
this technique, you can warp to any town you have previously visited.

                                * * * *
                              Black Magic

Foi                TP Use: 3
---
Foi is the basic fire tech in the game. With this one, a small ball of
fire erupts on the enemy. A basic damage of around 30HP can be expected,
with a few exceptions.

Gifoi              TP Use: 6
-----
Gifoi is an upgraded version of Foi in which three fireballs erupt on the
enemy. A basic damage of around 60HP can be expected with the usual
exceptions.

Nafoi              TP Use: 9
-----
Nafoi is a highly beefed up version of Foi in which a wave of fire attacks
the enemy. A basic damage of around 260HP can be expected with the same
exceptions as before.

Wat                TP Use: 4
---
Wat is the basic water-based technique in the game. In Wat, a small icy
chill attacks the enemy. A basic damage of around 40HP can be expected
with some exceptions.

Giwat              TP Use: 7
-----
Giwat is an upgraded version of Wat in which three chills attack the
enemy. A basic damage of around 120HP can be expected in some cases.

Nawat              TP Use: 10
-----
Nawat is the best version of Wat. With this technique, towers of ice
appear on the enemy and causes around 280HP of damage, with the usual
exceptions.

Tsu                TP Use: 6
---
Tsu is basically the light energy-based technique. It is only used by
Chaz. A wave of light streams from Chaz's hands at the enemy, causing 40-
60HP of damage.

Githu              TP Use: 12
-----
Githu is a better version of Thu. A thicker beam of energy streams at the
enemy in this technique. Damage can range from 180-280HP of damage to most
enemies.

Nathu              TP Use: 16
-----
Nathu is the most beefed-up version of Githu. The beam of energy emitted
is about the same thickness as Githu, but it has much more vigorous powers
within it. Damage usually ranges from 250-400HP of damage in most cases.

Zan                TP Use: 8
---
Zan is the basic wind-type technique in the game. In this technique,
around 45HP of damage can be expected, and basically, whirlwinds appear
around the enemies.

Gizan              TP Use: 12
-----
Gizan is an upgraded version of Zan. A few larger whirlwinds appear and
the enemy suffers around 100HP of damage.

Nazan              TP Use: 16
-----
Nazan is the highest version of Zan. In this one, a giant whirlwind
appears and whirls around the screen for seconds, devastating all enemies
with about 200HP of damage.

Gra                TP Use: 10
---
Gra is thebasic gravity technique. In this one, gravity pulls enemies
down slightly at a very rapid pace. Basic damage is around 80HP.

Gigra              TP Use:15
-----
Gigra is an improved version of Gra. The same gravity pool pulls the
enemies down more, but at a slower pace. Basic damage is around 150HP.

Nagra              TP Use: 19
-----
Nagra is the best version of Gra. The same gravity that Gra and Gigra uses
pulls enemies to the ground at an even slower pace. Basic damage is around
200-250HP.

Megid              TP Use: 36
-----
Megid is possibly the most damaging technique in the whole game. Chaz is
the only one who can use it, and it cannot be learned by simply leveling
up. Waves of anger explode at the enemy, causing anywhere between 300 and
600 points of damage.

Brose              TP Use: 16
-----
Brose is a technique that distorts enemies, and in some cases, destroys
them. Chaz and Gryz are the only ones who learn it. It's not all that
useful, as it is only a one-hit kill type technique, and rarely works.

Vol                TP Use: 8
---
Vol is a technique, a one-hit kill type, that destroys the enemy's
nervous system. Only Hahn can grasp this powerful technique. Very useful
against biomonsters as its rate of effectiveness is high.

Savol              TP Use: 16
-----
Even more useful than Vol, Savol is the more savage version of the two.
Savol attacks all enemies on the screen, and by the time you get it, it is
highly effective.

Gelun              TP Use: 3
-----
This attack reduces enemy attack power. It is pretty useless, because the
rate of effectiveness is very low. When it does work though, it has a good
effect.

Doran              TP Use: 4
-----
This technique reduces enemy agility. It, like Gelun, isn't very useful,
as its rate of effectiveness is also low.

Seals              TP Use: 9
-----
This technique decapacitates enemy technique usage. It could be useful
against Tech Users and the such, but again, its rate of effectiveness
isn't very high.

Rimit              TP Use: 12
-----
Rimit is basically the opposite of Rimpa. Rimit paralyzes enemies. It
isn't very effective, and don't even try it on a mechanical monster.

                                * * * *

This set of tables below shows the level at which each character learns
their techniques.

                                HELPING SKILLS

Recover
-------
Recover is a skill, used only by Androids. The skill automatically
recovers android HP by about 300.

Medice
------
Medice is a skill used only by Kyra, and is very effective, healing a base
HP of about 170 points on any character (yes, this WILL heal androids
too).

Miracle
-------
Miracle, used only by Raja, is basically a powerful form of Sar. It's not
quite as potent as Nasar, but it's better than Gisar. It restores 130-
170HP to all characters (like Medice, this will heal androids).

Medic Power
-----------
This skill is used only by Demi. It's not a real bad skill, and can revive
every single humanoid in the party if they are dying. The only bad thing
is, it only gives them 1/4 of their total life.

Ataraxia
--------
This is a great skill, used by Raja. Ataraxia is the only way to recover
TP, other than staying at an inn or touching a floor symbol thingy.
Ataraxia recovers about 1/4 of the total TP.

                                ASSIST SKILLS

Barrier
-------
Probably one of the most useful techniques in the game is Barrier, used by
Wren and Demi. Barrier cuts damage done by techs very low, and will save
your butt in many cases.

War Cry
-------
The second out of three skills gained by Gryz, War Cry helps attacking
power. It's not all that powerful, but good to use against bosses.

Blessing
--------
Another useful skill is Blessing. It is basically the same thing as Warla
and Deban, and helps cut enemy attacking damage down. Use when needed.

Warla
-----
This skill, like Blessing, is an attack blocker. It cuts enemy attacking
damage down low, and is useful. Use against bosses.

Vision
------
Often overlooked, Vision is a little more useful than generally thought.
If you want to get a battle over more quickly, use this, because it
increases Dexterity, and therefore, critical attacks.

                                ATTACK SKILLS

Crosscut
--------
This is probably Chaz's most useful skill. Chaz goes to the enemy and
slices the enemy twice, in the form of a Cross. Damage dealt depends on
what weapon he has, what level he's at, and what enemy he attacks.

Rayblade
--------
A nice alternative to Crosscut for Chaz, but not all the time. Rayblade is
powerful, but in some cases, Crosscut can be more powerful. This attack
generally deals out 320-450HP of damage.

Double Slash
------------
Probably Rika's best skill is the Double Slash. She attacks an enemy twice
with this skill. Damage, like the Crosscut, depends on the enemy attacked,
weapon used, and level Rika's at.

Flaeli
------
This is a fire skill learned early in the game by Rune, and later on by
Kyra. A bolt of fire hits the selected enemy, usually doing up to 90
points of damage.

Flare
-----
This skill is used only by Wren. A spout of fire shoots from Wren's chest,
and deals about 160 points of damage, with some exceptions.

Vortex
------
Probably Alys's most useful skill, Alys throws her projectile, and it
slashes around the selected enemy three times, usually dealing about twice
as much damage as she would normally do.

Astral
------
Probably one of Hahn's most useful skills is Astral. Hahn summons energy
from the Astral plane, and directs it at the enemy, usually dealing about
180 points of damage.

Airslash
--------
This is Chaz's hit-all skill. Chaz sweeps the air with his sword, and a
vacuum is created, suffocating the enemies. Damage is dependant upon his
weapon and strength.

Disrupt
-------
Disrupt is Rika's hit-all skill. Rika divides into enough holograms to
attack each enemy, and does so, dealing out about as much damage as she
usually does.

Hewn
----
One of Rune's more useful skills early on in the game is Hewn. It is a
wind attack, with a wind spiraling upon each enemy, and usually does 60
points of damage or more.

Tandle
------
This is one of the best skills for killing mechanical monsters. Lightning
attacks all enemies, and usually does at least 250HP of damage, a lot more
on mechanical monsters.

Efess
-----
This is probably THE most useful skill in the whole game, and it is
learned only by Rune. Energy from another dimension attacks all enemies on
the screen. It is only good against dark monsters (see the monster section
to find out who is a dark monster). Used against a non-dark monster, it
will do 1 point of damage. Used against a dark monster, however, it will
do 350-400 points of damage.

Legeon
------
This is one of the coolest-to-watch skills in the game. Blue and white
lights appear and explode all over the screen, and each enemy takes about
300 points of damage. Learned only by Rune.

Burst Rocket
------------
Only Wren may use this skill. It is not learned, and you have to find it
in the Weapons Plant on Dezolis. When Wren uses this skill, four rockets
burst from his shoulders and hit the battlefield, causing an average of
about 120 points of damage to all enemies, and as high as 230.

Positron Bolt
-------------
Just like the Burst Rocket, only Wren can use this skill. Again, it must
be found in the Vahal Fort. Using this skill causes Wren to carve a line
of destruction across the screen, causing around 300HP of damage to all
enemies.

Sweeping
--------
This is a duplicate of Chaz's Airslash, used by Gryz. Gryz sweeps his axe
through the air, striking all enemies for about the same damage that he
normally does.

Phononmezer
-----------
This is a skill that is found, and can be used only by Demi. Waves of
supersonic sound pulse from Demi, and all enemies take 100-200 points of
damage.

St. Fire
--------
This is Raja's only attack skill, other than Holyword, and it's a good one
at that. If used against a non-dark monster, will cause 1 point of damage.
However, when used against a dark monster, it will cause over 300 points
of damage.

Corrosion
---------
This is a Dark Force-type skill, used by Seth. Enemies are blasted with a
corroding substance, and usually take 100-200 points of damage.

Explode
-------
This skill is Chaz's form of Astral, with more devastating results. Chaz
summons his anger, and explodes it upon the chosen enemy, and the result
is usually an instant kill.

Eliminate
---------
This skill, learned by Hahn and Rika, was designed to kill enemies. When
used, the character appears by the chosen enemy, and the enemy is killed
on some occasions.

Diem
----
Rune's Diem skill is somewhat useful, and kinda cool to watch. Rune
commands his forces and shuts down the enemy's vital organs, resulting in
a kill.

Spark
-----
This is the androids' form of a death-inducing spell. A spark is emitted
from the android, and if used on a mechanical monster, often fatal.

Death
-----
This skill is one of Alys's coolest. Alys throws her slicer, which flies
to the selected enemy and instantly kills them. Not to be used on bosses.

Holyword
--------
This skill is basically Raja's death-inducing spell. It works only on dark
monsters, and is neat to watch.

Deathspell
----------
This is the Dark Force-type skill, used for a one-hit kill. It is used
only by Seth, and does the same thing as Holyword, only it works on all
organic monsters.

Negatis
-------
One of Rune's kill-all skills, Negatis is a fun one to use. A vacuum
pocket appears on each enemy, depleting their air and killing them by
suffocation.

Illusion
--------
This skill is used only by Rika, and the intended purpose is to lower
enemy agility. I, however, find it much more useful when Alys learns
Death..

Telele
------
This skill, used by Kyra, decreases enemy attacking power. It's not the
most useful skill, but it might become that if you are in a pinch.

Shadow
------
This skill simply lowers enemy agility. It is used by Seth.

Earth
-----
This skill, used by Chaz, has the power to put enemies to sleep. It's not
all that useful, because if it works in the first place, the enemy will
usually only stay asleep for a round.

Hyper Jammer
------------
This is another one of those skills that must be found. It can be used by
Wren only. Jamming waves are emitted from Wren's shoulders, and mechanical
enemies are stopped momentarily. It doesn't work all that well, so I just
use it with Tandle.

Moonshade
---------
Just like Earth, this skill has the ability to temporarily put enemies to
sleep. It really doesn't work very well, so I would just stick with the
other two skills.

Crash
-----
This is Gryz's one-hit kill skill. He takes his axe, and hits the enemy
pretty hard, and many times, the enemy will die. Can work on any enemy
other than a boss and a bully (Sandworm, Prophallus).

Stasis Beam
-----------
The Stasis Beam, used only by Demi, has the ability to paralyze an enemy.
It doesn't work all that well. Use it only against organic creatures.

Bindwa
------
This spell puts enemies to sleep, and is used by Kyra. Again, it's not
very useful, so stick with the other skills.

Mindblast
---------
You guessed it-another spell that puts the enemies to sleep. Since it's
Seth's skill, feel free to use it, but it still isn't the most effective
skill.

at which they learn them.

Oh wow, thanks for posting that here, that will really come in handy! I cannot believe how deep this game is, moreso than even some RPGs coming out now!

I am right before the part where [spoiler:3kno1gop]Alys dies[/spoiler:3kno1gop]. For anyone who has played it enough, how far would you gauge I am in? Aki said I was not even 20% of the way there!

I played Phantasy Star on an emulator and the game crashed while we were on the quest to find Alys the cure, I had to wait 2 years before I could resume my game, I thought the game would end with us saving Alys, then I thought the game would end by killing Rio (I hope I have that assholes name correct, I still hate that mother fucker for what he did to ****)
[youtube:5y0qkwts]86DCFJLuUbg[/youtube:5y0qkwts]
Never in my life have I ever want to hurt someone this bad, and to think this bastard is only fictional, I swear I would pick up a sword and fight him if I ever saw him PS4 style.

I remember the fight, every attack I made and I physically felt every attack he hit me with. I was scared and angry and wanted revenge so bad. Wow, lol.

Yeah, the game is just starting. Your still a boy you have to become a man.

Trying to maintain the spoiler free thing, I hope my censoring was adequate.

Oh, fun fact this was the first game that made me cry, I got quite a few tear drops out fortunately I was alone.

Phantasy Star oh Phantasy Star, damn.

I have a heavy heart just listening to these tunes
[youtube:2sw35suv]SN-EDLRLU58[/youtube:2sw35suv]

I have an acoustic rendition of Thray (Rune's Theme) on my hard disk.

Phantasy Star took me to such an emotional journey, I don't think I ever was so introjected into another video game character, Chaz was me I thought like him, he responded like I would've responded if I was him.

It was so amazing he would say what I wanted to say, he felt like how I felt.

Cory, thank you for taking me back.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The difficulty of the game was starting to get to me, and I was not sure if the game was for me anymore.

[spoiler:3s9u9tjj]I remember the death of Alys very well, but not what came after. I entirely forgot that you had to actually kill Zio, I assumed it was way later in the game. I could not believe how hard he was, he could kill literally all of my members with one hit... But I grinded a bit and I eventually beat him. It was so satisfying, I had not been that motivated in an RPG this old ever.[/spoiler:3s9u9tjj]

So yeah, I am really excited to finish this game. It is going to be a wild ride for sure. I am going to start the first article soon.
