Great topic, glad we have someone to make it. I'm not well versed in Puyo... But Puyo Pop Fever is still my go-to drinking game when I have friends over... Well, that and 4 player Chu Chu Rocket.

Wait, Am I having a senile moment... How can Sonic (1991) and Puyo Puyo (1994) both be celebrating 25 years? Do you mean 20th?

That was a typo on my end. It was October 25th 1991, a few months after Sonic's first released game. More specifically, the more obscure Famicom/MSX version that was a rather humble single player experience compared to the later more ambitious arcade version people are familiar with.

Do the stories ever feature any of the more unusual, lesser known creatures?

Also what is the general consensus among Puyo fans on the modern art style of Puyo games vs. the older, less stylized art?

I'm no huge fan, but I personally prefer the newer style... It's quite unique, like you could randomly come across new character art and without context know it's from the Puyo series. I like that.

There's no straight forward answer since Puyo Puyo is one of those type of franchises that constantly changes art styles. There's the deformed style used in Puyo Puyo through Puyo Puyo Sun, the more traditional dimmer style used for Puyo Puyo~n, the middle ground between the former two with Puyo Pop GBA, the "crayon/marker" look used in Puyo Puyo Fever through Puyo Puyo 7, and the modern look used for Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary onward. This isn't even getting into Madou Monogatari, spin-offs, or Discstation territory. The last one I will warn is an artist's nightmare.

Generally, people like the 20th Anniversary style, some people like the classic style, some people like Puyo Puyo~n. Again, it's varies on who you talk to. From my money personally I like the style used for Puyo Puyo 20th Anniversary onwards, with Puyo Puyo~n being a close second.

Collaborations for Puyo Puyo Quest, Puyo Puyo Quest Arcade, and Puyo Puyo Touch are in the works for 2016. Doesn't mention anything specific. Also briefly talks about Puyo Puyo Tetris, but only as a retrospective.

Must of been an update since last I checked it was ¥3218

EDIT: Actually, I was right, but it was added with tax.

There's a possibility that Puyo Puyo Tsu 3D Classics might get a global release since it was teased in the recent SEGA Central. I'll keep an eye out for any confirmations.

Good news. But I won't buy it since I already had it in my Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives 2, lol.

If have it in my Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection but I'd definitely buy this 3DS re-release because unlike Berto I'm a Sega Fan.

Updated with the recent news.

Also, no, this isn't the first time Puyo Puyo Tsu was released outside of Japan. The first time was with the Neo Geo Pocket version called Puyo Pop, and the second time with the Wii Virtual Console as an import title.

Of course you have to buy it.
It's different with the one in Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection.
This one is 3D !!!!  :P

Btw, had I known  Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives 2 would be localized, I'd prefer the NA version.

With the news of another Puyo Puyo game making it to the west it's made me want to get into the series again. I've played it in the past on various platforms but it's always just so hard I end up giving up. I'm gonna try and stick with it this time. Been playing the version that comes in Project Mirai DX currently.

This video really is something

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpGiG0v_irc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpGiG0v_irc)

They(the pros at this game) play so fast. It's so cool. You also see though that even they make mistakes, game just naturally gets complicated when you are making chains.

Puyo Puyo is comparable to a fighting game actually. There's a learning curve in order to get the most mileage out of it. Spamming two chains to beat generic CPU opponents is basically the equivalent of fireball spam, but against savvy opponents you'll need to do more then that. There's a sense of both offense and defense. Sometimes it's better to go offensive and slam your opponent with a barrage of weak chains to prevent them from recovering, sometimes it's better to be defensive and build up a chain that can endure garbage.

If you want a starting point, I'd recommend learning about stairs and sandwiches. They're the most basic way to understand how chains work. Practice through repetition, but remember that you'll also need to learn things like transitions, triggers, and audio and visual cues.

Thank you for the info. I've been reading and practicing, slowly getting better!

Stumbled upon this match on youtube of puyo puyo tetris. it's so crazy. one guy is obviously a pro at tetris and the other at puyo puyo. It's really interesting seeing how different their playstyles are. Game really gets intense. SEGA did a good job merging the two together.

Although I do know from personal experience with this game that you have to know what you're doing with Puyo in order to compete against Tetris, Tetris destroys puyo in terms of balance if you aren't familiar with puyo.

Heads up, but there's gonna be a Puyo Puyo NicoNico stream that will talk about the franchise's anniversary on the 25th.

Roughly 4 hours of discussion is gonna be a lot to digest.

A quick recap.

Well, frankly, the stream was surprisingly underwhelming. Despite the 4 hours, a lot of it was filler that focused on Puyo Puyo Quest and Puyo Puyo Quest Arcade. Some merchandise was confirmed though, a T-shirt and a doll loosely based on Arle. There was also a retrospective with every game released so far (well the major ones, sorry Puyo Puyo DA! you can piss off) and people playing some of the games for fun.

Probably the highlight of the stream was that Yuji Naka made an appearance actually. There's even an interview in Famitsu between Naka and Puyo Puyo producer Mizuki Hosuyamada http://www.famitsu.com/news/201602/25100038.html (http://www.famitsu.com/news/201602/25100038.html)

Will Puyo Puyo 25th Anniversary also make a wii game like 20th?
I wanna play the transitional Puyo game more than RPG game like Quest

I know puyo from Quest,I love the characters and musie but hate the game.
I have a wii at home, but last puyo game in wii is 20th Anniversary and I don't sure I can find it, as it release more than 4 years

Well, Wii has been done with for a while. Do you own any other systems? Interested in getting a new one maybe? The PS4, Xbox One, and Vita all have Puyo Puyo vs Tetris that you can import from Japan. It's a lot of fun!

Bumping this because of the recent news on Puyo Puyo Chronicles. Will update accordingly.

Doubting it will get a release outside of Japan, but it seems like staff at SEGA/Atlus are paying attention if my experiences have said anything.
