SEGA AGES 2500 series

I've always been vaguely aware of this Japan-only series for the PS2, but just recently started really looking into it.  I'm not as interested in the 3D "arranged" remakes of the games, but several volumes in the series look like wonderful collections of emulations -- the Galaxy Force II volume, for example, has all the original arcade and translated versions, as well as a vast gallery of promotional art, manuals and so forth.  

My question is... will these imports play on a 60GB (backwards compatible) PS3?

Only if your ps3 is ntsc/j.

That's strange that the PS3 itself is region free, but the PS2 emulation is regio-locked.   I've wondered this same thing, since I want the Panzer Dragoon remake.

I've seen a lot of these at my local used game store, but don't want to bother with making my PS2 slim BC. I always wondered why these haven't been made a monthly release on PSN and XBLA. Heck, treat is like a magazine or a club. SEGA AGES of the Month.

A few of them were repackaged in a Western collection for PS2 called something like Sega Classics Collection... but those are mostly the 3D "arranged" updated versions.  Which I'm not saying are bad... I've heard some people really like them.  But I'm much more interested in playing the original versions.

Isn't importing a japanese PS2 a cheap way of playing JAP PS2 games?
Or just getting a used PS2 and a boot disc?

The arranged version of Galaxy Force II is still 2D, it's just high resolution.

Some of the games are just direct ports of the Arcade games where the consoles of the time couldn't handle the graphics.

That's exactly what I want... direct ports of the arcade games.  And the extras included in at least some of the Sega Ages series, like scans of the promotional posters and such, are really interesting to me.
