No need for Playstation Plus for the update, as speculated. Best Netflix player as of now.

Rejoice, PS3 owners, your Netflix streaming experience just got vastly better than anything else on the market. Starting October 18 Netflix on the PS3 will no longer require a disc, and it'll stream some content with 1080i 1080p resolution and / or 5.1-channel surround audio, while everyone else will be stuck with a max of 720p stereo for the time being. Oh, and you'll get subtitles on some content as well. Netflix is partnering with Dolby on the audio side, and the surround format will be Dolby Digital Plus, which is the same codec used by the VUDU HDX streaming service -- we're guessing it'll require a tiny bit more bandwidth but the results should sound pretty great. Netflix says 5.1 will come to other platforms "over time," so we'll see how long that takes -- and given that the PS3 is now disc-free and the company's eschewed the SRS surround features baked into its Silverlight-based platform, we're guessing Microsoft's exclusivity period has now completely run its course. Update: Though the official PlayStation Blog originally reported the service would display streaming video at 1080i resolution, they've since struck that out -- they say it'll do 1080p now. Much better.

I have a 1080p TV and a PS3. Just made me wish I had a badass internet connection.

Cool beans! Pretty much means 360 and other devices will be getting this in the future. Nice to know Netflix is moving forward. These Netflix updates are always leap frogging, one device gets it then a few months later it goes to the others.

What I'm wanting is Hulu Plus to actually have some decent content!

Sounds good to me, but my internet may be too slow for 1080.  It would be nice if you could choose high quality and just allow for more buffering in the beginning.  We'll see how it shakes out.

You live in Cali, right? Warner hasn't let me down with their internet cable service (well, twice, actually, but considering it's been 2 years for 17.99 a month).
Hell, I don't watch TV or movies anyway, but it's good to know!

Where I live, Comcast, Warner or AT&T ignore. I might get in apartment or even buy a house (since it might be the same as paying fucking rent) closer to town. You know, when I can find a decent, full time job.

So far it's been okay.  It stops in the middle to re-buffer, rather than adjusting the quality down or up like the 360 version does.  I also have a Mac Mini connected to the TV, so we're still deciding which one will be the main one.  Since we watch Blu Rays on the PS3, probably that one.
