Man, that's just dreadful... my heart goes out to his family and everyone over there and all their loved ones all over the world.  It's such a big disaster it's hard to even grasp its magnitude all at once, it kind of effects me in waves.

Thats terrible... Terrible news. I really hope he can find her but in the area Suzuki is from, if his mother was still living there it was hit really, really badly by the Tsunami...

You can donate money to the relief funds/charities listed on the front page.

It's 100% more effective then prayer. (In my opinion...)

I'm not a religious man, but praying couldn't hurt either.

Thank you for posting those links on your front page--excellent job there, Segabits.  Everyone can donate something--and with cell phones and the Internet, it's easy, it helps, and you know that even though you're thousands of miles away, you've done a little bit to assist.

Is this Twitter page for real?  I mean, I know in the past people have falsified identities.  Just want to make sure it's not some jerk trying to stir-up something.  Terrible if true...

His Twitter is listed on the YS site, isn't it? And also, Shenmue Gai is following him. So, yes, it's real.

I hope she's okay, and my heart goes out to everyone in Japan...such terrible news. :(

Nothing is going to be done without physical actions along the lines of donations and volunteer work.

For Japan right now, things can get much much worse given the possibility of Fukushima nuclear meltdown and having faith, and prayers are essential.

Psychological testing have shown that people recover faster who pray and have people praying for them, than those who don't.

Comparing physical work to spiritual belief's is weird they both work in conjunction.

I've read plenty of studies that suggest prayer has no effect what-so-ever in any spiritual sense.

The only time prayer 'works' is when it induces the placebo effect... Similar to tests where people are given a 'placebo drug' that doesn't actually have any effect at all. If the patient feels as though they are taking something that will heal them they do slightly improve. If anything this demonstrates the amazing healing power of the brain, not anything spiritual or other worldly.

Likewise if someone believes prayer works for them and they know people are praying for them they will slightly improve.

I was very interested in the Placebo effect a couple of years back, but there is nothing spiritual about it I'm afraid...

It is my belief that if anything prayer is counterproductive, I mean, I bet there are thousands of people out there that think they can ‘pray’ and help people in disasters… Which is all very good intention but if they would instead do something practical… Something that actually works, I suspect there would be far more charitable donations, aid and ultimately the world would be a better place.

Quote
A major study of Christian intercessory prayer for cardiac patients has found no significant effect on reducing complications but patients who knew they were receiving the prayer had a slightly higher rate of complications.

Yeah, I avoided saying "pray" in my article mentioning the disaster since I think it does nothing. Consider this: we are way over here, they are way over there. Neither of us speak the same language. When I head home and say a prayer, is does absolutely nothing for them. However, a donation to the Red Cross actually does something.

I do, however, believe the term "keep them in your thoughts" is far better, as it means when you're going about your disaster-free day, remember that people elsewhere aren't doing so well. I kept Japan in my thoughts, and during my lunchtime I did some googling about the disaster and found that Capcom are giving their Street Fighter IV App sales to charity. Downloaded and a bit more money went towards the cause.

I personally like the term hope for the best, or hoping for the best. but "keep them in your thoughts" is a good one too.
