Halo Reach Beta Discussion
« on: April 03, 2010, 11:06:09 pm »

Who is going to be playing it? It is coming May 3rd, so in less than a month!

What are you all most excited for? I personally cannot pinpoint one specific feature as I think everything really sounds outstanding so far.

Here are some new details on the beta that were just revealed yesterday, describing some of the new items and weapons. A lot of reading, but it really really got me much more excited for the game than I was before.

And every other bit of news you could want about this game is on this site: http://www.haloreachbeta.com/

I am pretty certain now that this will be my GOTY, sorry Yakuza 3, Red Dead Redemption and Bayonetta! I am not sure what else there is to say, watch the multiplayer trailer if you have not already!

It's sad that Halo's gameplay is only just now starting to come up to snuff with the FPS games of a decade ago.

Too bad then that there's still no keyboard + mouse support, as far as I'm aware... thereby leaving it to still be inferior to PC first person shooters.

Sounds like they got some really cool ideas for the game, I'm looking forward to trying it out. I was honestly surprised at some of the really awesome multiplayer game types that they had in Halo 3 that I never knew about (punchout and Grifball for example) so if they support this game the same way (and they likely will) it should be really awesome.

If keyboards and mice were supported the game would become uneven. People with controllers would always be in disadvantage.

Also, where were other FPS when Bungie came up with... *drum roll* vehicles?

KB/Mouse would not yield disadvantaged. It is all about preference. In the end of the day it matters how well you use your instrument of choice. I know plenty of people that are really good at playing with controllers, put them on a PC and they are terrible.

Yes, pad players would be at a disadvantage. It's more of a dramatic control leap than the difference between pad players and arcade stick players in fighting games.

Aiming is far more quick and precise with mice, switching weapons is faster with mouse wheels, jumping is easier than having to reach down for a jump button, and so on. Add keyboard + mice to Xbox FPS games and I guarantee that it will be the preferred control method to give a competitive edge.

What FPS games? I cannot think of any games in the genre that have the same features and options Halo 3 had, even with tons of mods not many games can compare.

As for controls, I highly disagree. I assume you have not played Halo 3, or at least enough of it to see just how optimized it is to be played specifically with the controller.

While you are true with Halo 1 and Halo 2, I have no doubt in my mind Halo 3 would have to be extensively recoded and remodeled around a new design pattern before it would work well with a mouse and keyboard. It can be done, but would it be fun or balanced? I highly doubt it.

Literally millions of people do not seem to have any issues with the controls at all. I cannot be certain with how Reach controls, but if it is anything like Halo 3, I think it will have some of the best controls for a game ever.

I still have my friends copy of ODST in my apartment, does that mean i'll be able to get in on the beta?

Halo 3's online is very childish in comparison to most other shooters, when I played it I didn't even feel like I was accomplishing anything (levels, unlocks etc); It will be interesting to see what they have done differently this time.

Welllll to be fair, the unlocks are a relatively new thing of multiplayer. I agree it's fun (I remember particularly liking it in Age of Empires III for example, it seemed really funky and new), but I don't think it's necessary to a good experience.
Having said that, Halo 3 does have levels and ranks that you go through as you play, and you do unlock armour pieces (purely aesthetic) by doing so.

If you'll still have that copy on May 3rd, yes.

Oh hey, I didn't realize that TimmiT was amongst us. :P

Well duh, not many game developers want to make players walk so slow that it's like they're walking underwater.

Lmao, yes, I know how it's been optimized to be easier for people who don't have experience with FPS games on PC (and thus wouldn't know a great FPS game from a mediocre one). Keyboard and mouse players would still pwn those scrubs, though, especially if given the same features.

Who cares about balance? Keyboard + mouse players should be allowed to dominate.

Literally millions of people do not seem to have any issues with Nickelback's music at all. Does that make Nickelback a good band? No, they are still a shitty band, and using a controller for FPS games is still inferior to using a keyboard and mouse combo.

Millions of people can be wrong! =D

Rarely, but in this case, it is the millions of Halo players who are wrong. ^__^

Actually I just ran some tests, it says that you are wrong. Don't worry though, you don't have to play it.

Seriously though, I don't particularly like Halo either, but I'm not going to say people are 'wrong' for liking it. The wealth of game modes alone give reason to enjoy it.

Liking it in the bum is wrong.

Wait, you can't say that because its a persons preference, so you will whine about people that have such views. But you are allowed to do this with Halo?

Double standard much?
