Yakuza Dev Still Doesn't Think Switch Is The Right Platform For The Series

Quote
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama explained how the team is hesitant to port the series across to Nintendo's hybrid system as its family-friendly image could potentially clash with the "underground feeling" of the Yakuza series:
"Do we want to put a title like this where we're going around and picking a fight with the world and doing all this Yakuza stuff, on a Switch...
We still kind of think of ourselves as people of the night world, right? We don't want to be like walking around the day with everybody else.
Like for us, it's kind of showing this kind of underground feeling. I think the underground kind of feeling is what we want to do."

Sega explains why it’s dropping the ‘Yakuza’ brand
The series will now be known as 'Like a Dragon'

Quote
A Sega of America representative explained that the rebranding was to maintain parity between the Western and Japanese releases.
“I can confirm the series will be known as “Like a Dragon” moving forward to more closely align with the Japanese name,” said the representative.
In the franchise’s home country of Japan, the series has always been known as Ryū ga Gotoku since its inception in 2005, and takes after the name of its developer, Ryū ga Gotoku Studio.

Ghost of Tsushima Gave Sega Confidence to Release "Like a Dragon: Ishin" in the West
The original release back in 2014 never left Japan.

Quote
Executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama said, “We saw how well Ghost of Tsushima did, and how it was about this very Japanese setting made by Americans, so that gave us confidence Ishin could do well in America too.”
Yokoyama also noted that the success of Yakuza: Like a Dragon introduced the franchise to a new audience.
The timing was just right as well. Many players never got to play the original version of Ishin back in 2014 when it was released on PlayStation 3 and 4 as it didn’t get localized outside of Japan.

The "Yakuza" series will be retitled "Like a Dragon" in the West partly because of Ishin

Quote
RGG Studio family head, Masayoshi Yokoyama, explained why Yakuza is getting retitled. And it’s mostly due to the 2014 Ishin! spin-off.
Basically, Ryu Ga Gotoku: Ishin is a spin-off game that takes place in 19th century Japan.
There are certainly criminal factions, but no Yakuza. Releasing a game called Yakuza: Ishin!, containing no disco-suit wearing members of the Japanese criminal underworld, wouldn’t work.

Like a Dragon: Ishin! is not getting an English dub
The specialized vocabulary and the way people talked during the Bakumatsu era would make the lines incredibly long so it just wouldn’t work.

Quote
Producer Masayoshi Yokoyama said, “Starting with Yakuza 7 we’ve even been able to change the characters facial movement so they’re moving along with the English dialogue. It’s different than a foreign film dub.”
He added, “We fix their mouths so that they look like they’re properly speaking English. That’s where we’re at now. You can do that kind of thing with CG so in that way it’s actually better than live action. After we’ve changed the language to English we can change the characters faces to fit that as well. Japanese people are used to reading subtitles because we watch lots of Hollywood movies.”
“For the Ishin remake we’re using subtitles. We’re not dubbing voice overs,” he said. “We’re translating the game into English, but the specialized vocabulary and the way people talked during the Bakumatsu era would make the lines incredibly long so it just wouldn’t work. So this time we’re doing subtitles.”

Judgment mod restores actor who was deleted by SEGA

Quote
When Yakuza spin-off Judgment was released in Japan, where it's known as Judge Eyes, the voice and facial capture for Kyohei Hamura—the captain of the Matsugane family, and an important character in its crime thriller story—were provided by singer and actor Pierre Taki.
Three months later Judgment was withdrawn from sale, then re-released scrubbed clean of Taki's involvement.
Hamura's face was remodeled, and his voice re-recorded by a different actor, Miō Tanaka.
The Judgment Pierre Taki Restoration Patch (opens in new tab) is a mod that brings back both Taki's likeness and, if you're playing with Japanese audio, his voice.

I thought and hoped with Nagoshi-san gone the creative side of SEGA might make a come back. I guess its a bit soon and while its nice to see SEGA focus on making AAA games for the consoles and PC again. It's very disappointing to see them milk the Yakuza IP (yet again) and even more of a letdown to see the team use Unreal for the Remaster, much less have the team handle the remaster too.

I would have liked to see the team given more time to work on a new IP and the Yakuza IP given a little break. I'll still end up buying them all mind LOL
