Man, he reminds me of Dark Falz Theatre from Idola Phantasy Star Saga.
Smart, wise, but creepy as hell....

Pretty much, yeah.

Gauntlet & Golden Axe-Inspired “Battle Axe”is now 50% off in the Nintendo eShop & Steam!
Sale ends on June 23, 2022.

Quote
“Battle Axe” is a top-down arcade adventure game which is largely inspired by Ed Logg’s 1985 classic, Gauntlet, but also draws from the likes of Golden Axe, Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara, and Knights Of The Round.
Battle Axe can be played solo or in local co-op by two people, with players choosing their preferred hero before embarking on their quest.
Each hero has a projectile attack to tackle the enemy from afar, as well as a short-range attack, special abilities to give them a momentary advantage, and they can also can pickup items which have a variety of effects.

Still... Golden Axe Warrior is the better Zelda (spiritual) sequel than Zelda II.

That's true, even if it was mostly a rip-off of the first game.

But Golden Axe Warrior was the first game you play as an anonymous warrior, which in my eyes is close to playing as a customized character but without the customization.

Weren't Dragon Quest I, III, and IV hero/heroine predate him?
We could even choose the gender, male or female.

For I & III sometimes he/she's called with his/her title (Erdrick) since he/she's Erdrick's descendant.
so DQ IV (released in 1990, GA Warriors released in 1991) hero/heroine probably the one that's more comparable since he/she's also an anonymous warrior, :

By first game, I mean the first Golden Axe game to play as an anonymous warrior. Though I did forget about the dragon Quest games.
