Sorry but, I'm pro choice.

This game should not be an anime fashion show.  I'm all for having choices, but make them fit the universe that you've already established.  People love phantasy star for its mythology and world, not because they associate it with self expression and being fabulous.  There can still be plenty of choices involved.  Tasteful choices.  Perhaps choices even that don't pander to the teenyboppers of the internet.

Also, would it be terrible if clothing altered your statistics in some way?  Otherwise, customization is purely cosmetic and adds nothing to the gameplay.
Is there anything wrong with customization being purely cosmetic? I hate how clothes affect stats in most MMORPGs...

Anyway, about Phantasy Star Portable 2 having mostly anime styled characters, well, PSPo1 was way bigger on Japan than on the west, obviously the main target audience for PSPo2 was Japanese players, and since anime is so popular there it's not surprising that there's more anime related stuff on PSPo2, right?
The Phantasy Star series always had an anime-ish art style, PSO was just the least anime-ish game from the series, I think...

The next Sonic game should have every Sonic character playable, but it should be your choice if you play as them or not. If you do not like Shadow, OH WELL. Stop complaining, just play as Sonic and no one else, do not think about how adding all of those characters could have worsened the budget of the level design and art direction. I am pro choice, after all.

Seriously though, a lot of people buy these kind of games because of the character designers, for sure, but at the end of the day it is going to be the setting and gameplay that keep people interested, not making their characters.

APB had literally the best character customization I have ever seen in my life, but remember what happened to that? I do not even think the game lasted a month.

In my opinion character costumization is only important for online RPGs, but, obviously the most important aspect should be gameplay, and the development of character costumization should in no way affect the development of the gameplay.

The clothes in Phantasy Star Online where different to the clothes in Phantasy Star original series. The clothes in Phantasy Star Universe were different again and in Phantasy Star Portable 2, different again to some degree.

Again its FAR better now that if you want to dress like a hardcore space marine, or what ever... You can but if you don't. Well you can dress like a frilly pink girl. In PSO if you wanted to be a female Ranger you had to look like a skanky prostitute, if you WANTED to be a male force you HAD to look like a cross dressing cock sucker.

Phantasy Star Online the series in general means very different things to different people... Some use it as a glorified chat room, every since PSO, others just want to grind all day and yes some even want to use it to play dress up. I don't see why ANY of these things should be 'stamped out' with lack of choice... If anything Hacking was always the biggest problem and in PSO it was rife.

The worst trend in any PSO game was the Super Sayan shit from PSO... Far worse then anything I've seen in PSU in fact.

Going by any other MMORPG, yes terrible... Because what ends up happening is there becomes favoured combinations of clothes and everyone ends up dressing exactly the same and a few variations depending on level and class.

APB is one failed game among many succesful games to have deep custimization features. A game does not fail because of customization features so that is not really a good reason against customizations.

A great variety of customizations is good. I'm wholeheartly with what sharky said up there ^. Super saiyan hair looked generic imo as well (it was never my pick) but that doesn't make it non suitable all of a sudden, it doesn't take away the credibility because of one silly looking (in my opinion) long yellow spikey haired wannabe super saiyan goku looking character. I mean do not forget that you could actually make your character look like a fat little dwarf. A fat dwarf! Everything is suitable as long "artstyles" don't clash.

Anyway, where the hell did this discussion start anyway? Are there going to be lots of customization features in the first place? Honestly I think we should all just put trust in the development team as we have not seen anything.

APB did not fail, it's publisher entered into administration, UK tax laws not helping (Damn you children of Thatcher/Blair! :Shakesfist: )

In any case, another company has bought all rights and materials to the game and hoping to release sometime this year.

So no open world for this one either? I have to be honest, I would love to go around lavish PSO over world with friends... instead of staying in the lobby with all the weirdos that hold hands all night.
