3DS/DS game reccomendations
« on: May 29, 2012, 03:42:28 pm »
So come the end of the month I might be getting a 3DS. Why? Well, for one thing, the last "new" handheld I bought was a Nomad. I do own a GBA, but I bought that about two years ago. I also bought the GP2X Caanoo, but thats more of an emulator than a console with new games. I have an iPhone and iPod TOuch, but those aren't really handhelds.

Since my health care has this sweet program where every 120 gym visits gets me a $150 refund, I'll have $150 to put towards the thing. Not looking to be talked out of getting one, nor am I looking to be talked into a Vita. Might get one of those late next year or once more SEGA titles are on it.

So basically, I wanted to know what DS and 3DS games I should get. Any recommendations? I'm especially interested in ones that may be cheap used (DS titles) and are hidden gems.

3DS
Resident Evil: Revelations: supposed to be really good if you like Resident Evil (new or old apparantly)

Shinobi: I've heard nothing but good about this title too.

DS
Thor: I know it's a movie tie-in, but it's actually a really great little old-school scrolling brawler by WayForward. I really enjoyed this game.

For now, I'd recommend Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective if you liked Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney as it's from the same person. But what kind of games do you like to play on handhelds, Barry?

I don't have a 3DS, but I've heard that Super Mario 3D Land and Pushmo (a downloadable title) are really good. There's also Rhythm Thief coming out soon.

As for the DS, I'd rank it right up there with the Dreamcast as far as uninque and diverse libraries go.

If you like good RPGs, there's Radiant Historia, Chrono Trigger (The best version of it), Dragon Quest IV, V, VI and IX.
As for good SEGA titles: Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure, Sonic Colours and The Rub Rabbits.
Other standouts are:
Advance Wars: Dual Strike (really addictive turn based strategy)
Elite Beat Agents (Possibly the best rhythm game I've ever played) - the Japanese sequels are really good too.
Hotel Dusk: Room 215 (a well written mystery with a really cool visual style)
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (every bit as good as Symphony of the Night) - also see Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia
The entire Ace Attorney series is fantastic. The third title's my favourite.
Ghost Trick is from the Ace Attorney team, but it's more of a puzzle game.

For some solid 2D action, there's Mega Man ZX, Mega Man Zero Collection and Contra 4.

Picross 3D is a really addictive puzzle game.

The Professor Layton games are really good if you're up for brain teasers and some good animation.

Space Bust-A-Move is a must buy too.

Sorry for the rambling nature of this post :-/.

Also: Retro Game Challenge.

Thanks for all the ideas guys! If there are any more, please share.

@Chaosmaster8753: I like platformers, puzzle games (nothing insanely hard though) and have really enjoyed the first Phoenix Wright on iOS.

Games I'm sure to pick up day one are the Sonic Rush titles, just because I've never played them and they're very inexpensive. Will probably get Shinobi too, and eventually Generations. I know 3DS Generations isn't amazing, but I really want to play it since it has Casino Night and Mushroom Hill.

I'll second SOUP on the Elite Beat Agents, top little game that I'd forgotten about.

Also, I was meaning to get Chrono Trigger, but is it similar to Dragon Quest? I played the DS version of Realms of Reverie (DQ6 I think?) and I found it an unbearable grind. Maybe JRPGs just aren't my thing, but this one in particular really killed it for me whereas I liked stuff like Skies of Arcadia and enjoyed Lost Odyssey.

@MadeManG:
Chrono Trigger isn't really like Dragon Quest gameplay-wise. The art was done by Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball) just like Dragon Quest, but most of the similarities end there.
The whole game's designed around the fact that you don't grind. There are no random battles, and you can skip out of a good chunk of the fights if you want to.

I'd really recommend checking it out. One of my personal favourite games.

Retail:

Mario Kart and Kid Icarus clearly demonstrate the system's features. Kid Icarus is pretty frustrating at first, but once you learn the controls it's amazing.

EShop:

Pushmo (puzzle platformer), Sakura Samurai (Punch-Out meets Zelda), Colors3D (a drawing app) are all great diversions for less money.

Sounds like something I would like much more, I'll check it out! Thanks!

Has anyone else around here played The World Ends With You? I've been wanting to try that out for a while now.

Sorry about that one :(. I can't seem to find many games on their PAL store.

@Chaosmaster8753:
The World Ends With You is definetley worth checking out if you're up for something different. The main character's pretty much the definition of Emo, but the story and battle system are interesting. You control two protagonists at the same time (one on the top screen w/ the d-pad, the other on the bottom w/ the stylus). Lots of interesting ideas, and it's not a super long game (for a JRPG).
