People aren't starting wars over NSA spying on us? Spending trillions of tax dollars on needless conflicts? But they will to stop a few people from loving each other under the eyes of the law?

And why is it the governments business who I love or don't? Marriage should be personal, between two people and their religion. Not with the government.

Gay marriage wouldn't start a war. The "conflict" has to do with morality. For some people homosexual relations are wrong (and there should be rules preventing them) and for others they are alright (and should be allowed).

In any case, both sides of the question should respect eachother. Both may have their points based on their religion or belief system, but a war wouldn't decide anything.

If it did start a war, it would be the most fabulous war ever!

Why should anyone respect bigots?  When you try to take other people's freedom, that's not morality.  Morality should only have to do with the way you live your own life.

I think he must have meant a civil rights war. Meaning that it would be difficult to change some of the state attitudes. Not an actual war with guns and stuff. At least I hope that's what he meant. I do know that a lot of southern states in the U.S. will not like it. I think the entire U.S. will eventually support it rather that all like it or not.

God created the world to be spied on, and have wars for the greater good, he didn't create the world so a man could marry a man and a woman could marry a woman, what a sin! (im joking here btw, so don't kill me anyone, I'm in full support of having freedom to marry the same gender)

but the only stuff the government is involved with is married couple benefits, i know there is more, but the only two i can think of, is hospital, like say your other is badly injured or is having a mental issue they dont allow you have to a say on anything unless your either the family or married. umm.. and something about death too but im not exactly sure of the details.

but yeah, with stuff like that, you can see why people were mad about not being able to officially be recognized by the government just because they had a same sex relationship. The people against allowing same sex couples those benefits every couple should be able to have are just evil.

Maybe the government could of changed the name of their recognition of marriage to Civil Unions like they were talking about doing to make the religious people less upset, but it looks like they decided against that, oh well XD. Looks like religious people will just have to deal with it.

Unfortunately, dude, same-sex advocates also drop the ball by assuming that everyone who disagrees with their stance is evil/bigot when really the vast majority are not really against their sexual orientation. There is such a thing as accepting, it's another thing entirely to demand and enforce people to embrace said culture.

The way I see it, the only way to have something that applies to both parties and that I fully support: civil partnerships. Same sex civil partnerships might be something that everyone can agree on.

Why exactly marriage is the ultimate token of recognition, I'll never know...

yeah i'd be fine with the term civil union or civil partnership, as long as it was applied to everyone and not just same-sex partnerships in regards to being officially recognized by the government.

I don't see the big deal about term marriage either. i actually prefer the term civil union or civil partnership.. sounds more modern, marriage sounds so old age and traditional :P

If they want to call same-sex marriage a Civil Union, then yes they should refer to all marriages as Civil Union, not just same-sex. That would be discrimination in some way or another. A lot of people like to mention how same-sex isn't traditional and therefore shouldn't be allowed. There is absolutely nothing traditional about marriage anymore, times have changed. I feel that if people really want to keep marriage "traditional" they should outlaw the possibility of divorce. There are plenty of people who get married and divorce in a few months, i mean, really? You're afraid of people from the same sex to get married, but you're not upset that everyone gets a divorce these days? Where's the "tradition" in that?

Why is someone a bigot for believing gay relationships are wrong? And how does that take away anyone's freedom?

There is a difference between me thinking a gay lifestyle is wrong under my own moral belief system and going around setting same-sex couples on fire.
For someone to earn respect, they must first respect others.

I personally believe that the government should just back away from the "marriage" thing. Just call them Civil Unions, and people can get "properly" married within their tradition/religion. Personally I always felt that marriage was more of a religious thing.

@pirovash

Far from it, actually. Unlike morally-bankrupt celebrities and the people who trivialize 'em, divorce is still quite a painful and unsettling issue.

No, 3raser. I actually did mean with guns and stuff. No sarcasm here. I'm actually making a point. 53% of the U.S. might support it, but low percentages of most states support it. This might actually start a war. I hope it does because I would really like to join one side in particular. I'm just not going to discuss which to anyone because I want all opinions welcome, like I said before.

I think I might know which side you would be on. It doesn't matter though. If you want to kill people over something as simple as that, then you may need psychological help. I'm not trying to offend you. I'm just telling you my opinion.
