I think the next Sonic game has a lot riding on it.  After Boom, people are going to be looking for a serious palette cleanser, even though ST didn't even develop it.

I agree with this, I don't think Sonic Boom was as bad as 06, but it's gotten a lot of flack and generally got crucified all over.

I hope it's a legitimately great game, not just 'acceptable'. I thought Generations was okay, but nothing special, I got bored by the time I got to the first boss (I need to go back and play more, but it really didn't capture me).

I'm expecting it to be bad though.

If you got bored of Sonic Generations before the first boss then simply you just don't like current Sonic games, regardless of quality. The general consensus is that Generations and Colours are both good if not great Sonic games. And I wouldn't change much about the series going forward. I especially love the on the fly perspective switching and I think Sonic Colours especially got the right level of platforming vs speed.

It's the same with me and GTA games, I don't doubt they're well made games or whatever, but I never find them compelling, I end up just goofing about, looking up the all weapons cheats and killing people until I'm bored.

That's very likely. By comparison I really enjoyed Rayman Origins, but couldn't get into either Sonic Colours or Sonic Gens. I do want to give Gens another shot, as I feel there's potential in it. I still feel like it's not up to the standards of the originals, but that could legitimately be some nostalgia.

I thought GTA 3-SA were good games, but GTAIV was shit, and I didn't even play GTAV. I don't think GTAIV was a well made game outside of technical feats.

Aye, and here's the problem.  Gens and Colors are good games that can be made very, very enjoyable if you really take the time to appreciate all the things they got right while simultaneously accepting their flaws.  However, I wouldn't expect a normal non-sonic fan to have to do that.  Games like Rayman Origins and Mario Galaxy need no explaining, and have very few flaws.  Sonic games need to be better at selling themselves at first glance.  They need more polish, more forgiving level design, and a generally lower barrier of entry to be considered more than just good.

To be fair the new Rayman games are better platformers than both Sonic and Mario. Which is surprising since the original Rayman games were absolute crap.

But Sonic COULD be better than Rayman, Colours and Generations are on the right track imo... They just need more time in the oven and more polish to go that extra mile.

I think Rayman was helped by the great 2D style as well, helped it stand out. It would be amazing if they made a true 2D Sonic game again, but that will likely never happen.

Meh, I'm not all that fussed about returning to sprites and such. Just make the game play well and look nice and I'm there. As I said I really dig the perspective switching of recent Sonic games.

I will not accept this. Replay them, come back and don't even dare to tell me that Rayman 2 isn't one of the best 3D platformers ever made!

I never played Rayman 3 (I remember it was met with a rather lukewarm critical reception) but Rayman 2 is fucking fantastic.  It's honestly better than SA1 and maybe even Mario 64/Banjo at times.  Talk about under-appreciated.  Dat danny elfman tier music.

I was half-joking. I dont get the love for Rayman 2, its pretty good, but I preffered Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 at the time.

I guess I dont mind gimmicky things over purity

Not sure what you mean by purity but rayman 2 is magical and a goddamn oddity for 2 reasons

1) there are no glitches.  None.  It is a technical masterpiece.  Compare this with SA1 and good grief.

2) the controls and camera are smooth as hell.  It literally almost never gets in the way of gameplay.

I mean, it may not be everyone's cup of tea but its a brilliantly realized game, especially for 2000 or what have you.

Eh, sprites are nice and all but I prefer 2.5D over modern 2D sprites any day of the week. There's something to appreciate about sprites made in the past but these days sprites aren't nearly as great.
