Classic Games No One Talks About - The Game!
« on: January 01, 2011, 02:40:29 am »
Rules: Basically with each post, we will post a classic game on a SEGA system that you think no one talks about or is underrated, with some screens and why you like it. Next poster continues it with more games.

I'll start:

The Lost Vikings

This game is a multi game, appeared on the Genesis. It is actually developed by Blizzard, who is known for Diablo, Warcraft and Starcraft series of games. I'm not a Blizzard fan at all, but this game is pretty great.

The gameplay has you play with 3 Vikings, each one with unique powers, you can switch them around to get through puzzles. One of the Vikings (Erik) could run faster than the rest, bust through walls with his head and jump higher. The second Viking (Baleog) was a fighter class, he had a sword to kill enemies near him and a bow & arrow to kill enemies away from him/hit switches with. The third Viking (Olaf) was a tank basically, he has a shield to block attacks, can be used for a stepping stone for Erik to jump higher.

Great game.

Ahh, great thread idea! The Lost Vikings is probably my favorite game by Blizzard too.

Battle Mania Daiginjou / Trouble Shooter Vintage

[youtube:33ilqaj1]TCjDfbJWbt8[/youtube:33ilqaj1]

It is a shmup that does not play like many others, it feels more like a general action game like Gunstar Heroes, especially with the weapon selections. Not much else to say about what you do in the game though, it is pretty obvious right as soon as it starts out.

I think this is one of the best unknown games of all time, and I would definately consider it one of my favorite 16 bit games overall... It would probably be one of my favorite games ever if it had co-op and maybe some more modes. It has some poor sound I suppose, but the action, art, music, graphics, overall design and style are some of the best I have ever seen in any kind of game I can think of. Even the story and setting are wonderful. It really is just a fantastic game.

Usually I straight up hate shmups, but this, Radiant Silvergun and DeathSmiles have really changed my viewpoint of them entirely.

I will post some others later.

Totally Brilliant Topic !

I will add Pen Pen Triicelon/ GE Land Ho.

Land HO is staffed by Former Team Andromeda, SEGA Rally CS Team & Nights members and its showed in the game quality.

Take the racing genre then mix it completely on its head, add in completely mad characters and stages that only the Japanese could come up with (even the music score is totally bonkers )  then add in fun and a 4 player and you have a game that almost never fails to put a smile on my face . This game is just simple clean fun that always anyone can pick and play and where the game doesn't take its self serious at all, I miss games where its all about simple fun pick up and play

Game was just crying out for a sequel with double the stages and 4 player On-Line play and rankings  (the games really downer points)

X-Men 2: Clone Wars.

A platformer/beat 'em up developed by SEGA for the Genesis. I never hear anything about this game anymore, but it was one of my favourites. All of the characters genuinely feel unique. They've all got plenty of special moves, and handle differently.
The character's are big and detailed, but not to the point where they obscure the view of the surroundings.
Even the way it started off was great. The game just starts off right away. You don't even get to the title screen/character select until you finish the first level. It's really unique, and pulls you in right away.

Fantastic Dizzy for Sega Genesis
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I originally played this on an older console I can't even remember what one... It was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the Sega Genesis, and I think even Game Gear had a port of this...
Pretty simple concept to this game.
You play as an egg named Dizzy, trying to rescue all your egg-friends and family from an evil Wizard. The game is strickly adventure, very little combat aside from a few Mini Games.
You take damage by hitting spiders and fireballs and what not. They're fruit throughout the whole world to recover food.
And 99 stars you have to collect to beat the game.
Run around find items, here's the catch tho, you can only hold three items at a time. So this is where alot of people were turned off by the game, since it requires alot of back-tracking. I have yet to actually beat the game, I got right to the end and the last boss killed me, and I lost patience to go through the whole game again.
Plus some of the puzzles are just outrageously frustrating if your low on health.
But the graphics are nice, the music is sweet, and I adore the storyline non the less. I miss games where it was just to rescue a dear princess or something, in this case tho it's your friends and family, ultimately to rescue your girlfriend. Or rather, Dizzy's girlfriend.
There was multiple games in the Dizzy Series all sharing the same idea, just minor plot changes. I believe this is the only Console Port tho.
It's on the Wii virtual console. I think it was released on one of those SEGA AGES packages in Japan too.
Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind
Here is a game that I loved as a kid. The second game pissed me off, but I thought the first game was good. Basically you play Bubsy and try to get back your 'yarn' that was stolen by the woolies. Its a side scrolling, I want to be Sonic platformer from the early 90's. It has high speed sections.
Another great topic guys! I don't think I ever beat this. The controls for this were a little crazy but once you got used to it you were good.
Ghostbusters for the SEGA Genesis
[youtube:2onpzp8u]OPOfgDKv4Pg[/youtube:2onpzp8u]
The ONLY good Ghostbusters game of the time and a very distinct Japanese game (the bosses could only have been developed by the Japanese), despite being a very american license. Game had great RPG elements, fun platforming, creative weapons and AWESOME music. I suggest everybody give the game a go, whether it is on an original Genny/ Mega Drive or a emulator on your computer. Fantastic game.
Did you know it was developed internally by SEGA? I'm not sure, however, who the specific team was. The credits have a lot of nicknames.
I like to add Batman Returns On the Mega CD.
[youtube:1f1n1y3o]ZcSovxUN8Zg[/youtube:1f1n1y3o]
This was the game to truly bring home the feeling of playing a top SEGA Sprite Scaling Arcade game in your very own home. The scaling& rotation were amazing, everything looked completely soild and moved smoothly, the expoltions were simply masive and the soundtrack to die for. But it wasn't just about the bells and whistels , the game also played and controlled like a dream and again very much like a classic SEGA Arcade, with tight time limits and that classic -1 more go feeling
Even now the game is as playable as it was back in 1993 a true classic
Crusader of centy, or also known as soleil for the genesis/mega drive.
I got to know it at an early age, around 11 when we started learning about Dreamcast and burned copies. My brother ordered 2 discs of genesis emulators for the DC full of games, and there I discovered this masterful piece of game.
The main character has a sword which he can use to normally hit enemies, but when holding the attack button and release it after charged, he uses his sword as a boomerang and throws it forward and gets it back. At first look you would think it's a Zelda clone, but it's far from one.
For one, soleil is not revolved around gadgets to progress, instead you have animals that join you and when setting them alongside you(through the pause meny), they change or add a feature to your weapon. In example one animal adds an Ice element to your weopon which you can use to change water to ice so you can walk over it. Another animal adds a greater range when throwing the sword. Also you backtrack a lot less compared to Zelda, it's more straightforward and keeps up a good pace.
This is one of the few RPG's that fully takes advantage of the genesis hardware. The music in this game is beautiful, the visuals are colorfull and clean. The length of this game ain't Zelda large, but it's still enough to keep you happy when you finish it. This game is a true gem and stands alongside the other gems on the genesis.
Oh and also, sonic is in it, which is awesome!!
I really enjoy Cosmic Smash for the Dreamcast. Lots of replayability & the graphics still hold up today. Really a fun game to play with other people:
