30 years goes by spectacularly fast. As of this month, Altered Beast--the nostalgic yet oft-maligned--side scrolling beat-em-up is turning 30. Released in the arcades, followed by ports to the Genesis and near-countless others, Altered Beast has never been a favored franchise by Sega, historically. Nor particularly by fans.
There have been attempts at revivals--Altered Beast: Guardian of the Realms--which was an accurate homage with some good ideas, yet was a slog to complete, and Project Altered Beast, which was a re-imagining that failed on gameplay and even nostalgia.
Despite this, there have been signs that Altered Beast is ready to re-emerge once more:
1. With the 30th anniversary upon us, Sega and Funko Pop have released werewolf figures. Accompanying these figures are a new logo; it would seem an odd choice to go through the trouble of making a logo solely for Funko.
2. About two years ago, Sega inked a deal with a media company to produce a show or movie about Altered Beast, and we should be seeing the fruits of that labor soon. https://variety.com/2016/film/asia/altered-beast-streets-of-rage-sega-movies-shows-1201933661/ (https://variety.com/2016/film/asia/altered-beast-streets-of-rage-sega-movies-shows-1201933661/)
3. In an older Sega Blogs interview with M2, who ported 3D Altered Beast to the 3DS, the developers stated that there was no outstanding reason to port the game other than the fact that they looked at what sold on the Wii Virtual Console, and Altered Beast was high atop the charts. Clearly, the game still sells.
4. Altered Beast was one of--if not the--first games featured on Sega Forever, and has been downloaded 500-thousand times on Android alone.
5. In the Sega Genesis Collection trailer for PS4, XBox One, and PC, Altered Beast was featured heavily.
6. Despite not having a featured game since 2005, Sega has kept the series somewhat in our collective conscience with guest appearances of Neff's rhino form in Wreck-It Ralph and the werewolf appearing in Project X-Zone 2 for 3DS.
7. Sega recently said they were looking to bring back old franchises, and they have three unannounced digital games for Q3 2018.
I know this might not mean much to many, and that it could all be circumstantial. Yet, it means a lot to myself from a gaming perspective. Altered Beast--along with Sonic, of course--cemented my fondness of the Genesis and Sega as a whole. While a short, sometimes crude ride, playing as different beasts co-op with a friend was incredible fun as an adolescent (and if there's anything cooler than turning underworld demons to stone with your werebear-breath, I don't want to know about it).
Optimistically, I'd love for Altered Beast to be featured in Smash Bros. as a fighter or assist trophy (I even created a thread for it: https://smashboards.com/threads/wise-fwom-your-gwave-altered-beast-for-smash.453847/ (https://smashboards.com/threads/wise-fwom-your-gwave-altered-beast-for-smash.453847/) ), I realize that this is unrealistic.
While the window of opportunity to announce a game to coincide with anniversary is closing, in Sega even acknowledging Altered Beast with figures and a possible movie, it's enough. It's more than the series has had in a while. However, I'd gladly take more from one of my favorite games.

3D Altered Beast (3DS) Interview with Developer M2

When we looked at what games to port from the MegaDrive, we started with the games that were performing well on Wii Virtual Console, and from there narrowed down candidates based on popularity.
One of those titles was Altered Beast.
Maybe it’s because people find the bear really funny, I don’t know, but Altered Beast seems to be a pretty popular game!
Keep in mind that there’s an arcade version of Altered Beast, but unlike the arcade version, the MegaDrive version has two layer scrolling, and without those two layers, you really don’t have a foothold to start working on stereoscopic 3D.
The arcade version basically doesn’t have any parallax scroll at all.

The Limited Run version of the SEGA Astro City Mini will only be limited to 3,500 units, which will probably make this version sought after in the collectors market compared to the regular Japanese version.
As far as I know, the SEGA Astro City Mini unit included inside the English packaging is exactly the same as the Japanese retail unit.

Wave Master, the company that manages Sega's music, has contacted me and asked me to remove lots of albums related to Sega.
At the end of the day, over 500 albums were removed, including Sonic, OutRun, and others.
Unfortunately, this even included fan made compilation albums for games that have no commercial releases, which, quite frankly, makes absolutely no sense.

These five games are Altered Beast, Toejam & Earl, Sword of Vermilion, Thunder Force II, and Dynamite Headdy.
Out of the five games, Thunder Force II is probably the most notable, as it was skipped over in favor of its two sequels Thunder Force III and Thunder Force IV with stuff like the SEGA Genesis Mini or the SEGA AGES series, until now.

The new OpenFPGA feature recently made available to Pocket owners with firmware update version 1.1 beta.
In short, this allows developers to make all new “cores” for the Pocket’s FPGA hardware, allowing it to run games from other retro game hardware it was not originally intended to replicate.
This is an official update from Analogue, which they’ve made clear since the Pocket’s original announcement was something they’d always intended for it to have, even if it couldn’t be there on release.
Now that it’s finally here, the first new community developed cores included ones made to run Sega Game Gear, Master System, and SG-1000 games, created by spiritualized1997.

Here's how both this remake and its sequel could work:
- Updated story with more fleshed-out characters.
- Fixed controls, especially camera controls.
- Both games should be open world, where you could roam freely around the city, talk to people, do missions, and play minigames and SEGA arcade games, including the original Altered Beast.
- Rename Foret City to Forest City.
- In both games, when you play as Luke (as Human), you could walk, run, jump, punch and kick, dodge-roll, interact with objects and people, use weapons (guns, close combat weapons, etc.), drive vehicles, and swim. You could enter the transformation menu anytime you want, on the ground, in the air, even within a vehicle (you automatically jump out/the vehicle gets destroyed in the process). Same goes for reverting back to Human (ground, air, etc.).
- Make the cutscenes (and the transformations) JUST as cinematic as the announcement/teaser trailer.
- Keep the gory CGI transformations, but maybe don’t have them play EVERY SINGLE TIME you transform, at least not during heated affairs with enemies and bosses. And make new transformation scenes for Weretiger. Just imagine how awesome it would be to fly a helicopter or a plane, chasing an enemy in the air, then jumping out, choosing a Beast Form in mid-air (time stops or slows down in the transformation menu), and going Garuda, Dragon, or U.W.H. (Unidentified Weightless Human) on the enemies.
- Make Luke's Health, Spirit Energy (Beast Form), attacks, combos, and other Human abilities upgradable, along with each Beast Form.
- The player should be able to lock on to enemies and bosses.
- Garuda, Dragon, and U.W.H. (Unidentified Weightless Human) could actually fly freely in the sky.
- Werewolf, Wendigo, Grizzly, and Weretiger could climb buildings. (Werewolf and Weretiger would be faster, and Wendigo and Grizzly would be slower, but Wendigo and Grizzly would be harder to get knocked/shot off the wall.)
- Werewolf and Weretiger could make huge jumps to get from building to building.
- Wendigo would be much bigger and be able to lift cars, trucks, and other large objects.
- Merman could be used underwater, as well as on land, but his attacks would be more effective in water.

Now, in 2024, one sole developer by the name of Jeff Silvers has managed to acquire the Tengen name and has used this to create a brand new company called 'Tengen Games'.
According to the website, Silvers had conducted research in 2022 and discovered that nobody owned the Tengen name at the time, so simply began a lengthy process of officially registering it with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The registration is now currently in the 'final stages' of completion.

Running September 12–14, 2025, the campaign invites fans to download and "clip" a retro-inspired SEGA flyer — The SEGA Circular — and redeem it at participating retro game stores across the U.S. for one free Console Heroes collectible. These collectibles are miniature dioramas that are hidden inside replica Genesis game cartridges, each one opening up to reveal a 3D scene from legendary SEGA titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog™ 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Altered Beast™, and more. While supplies last, one per customer.

- Redesigned stage's parallax clouds
- New beast palette to a better constrast (thanks to RheoGamer!)
- high jump for all hero states, including beast
- proper jump punch and jump kick hero frames implemented to all states
- switched from blinking to shake effect to all enemies after collision (thanks to Yuri D'Avila)
- enemies shake state timeout to avoid overpopulation
- Scroll performance increase thanks to Erik Hogan from Scorpion Engine who enemies animation sync by type
- Damage / Hurt / fall states partially implemented (not in beast form)
Important: In history section, some screens are scrambled. this is a Scorpion issue that is being solved already.
