ScrewAttack Apparently Hates Water Levels
« on: July 11, 2011, 06:39:20 pm »
In ScrewAttack's latest Top Ten they look at the Top 10 "Worst" Water Levels. They say that nobody even likes water levels (I do...) and it seems several SEGA titles made the list. Hydrocity from Sonic 3, the water dungeon in Skies of Arcadia and the entire game of Ecco the Dolphin make the list. Personally, I love all three of those levels.  :P
How about you guys? Do you like water stages or do you agree with ScrewAttack here?

Here is the video in case you want to see it:

And as a side note, Wind Waker is actually my favorite Zelda game. I've always liked sea voyages and I guess it's one of the few games that allows for that experience!

Who would have expected water levels in games about dolphins and boats?

That's bullshit about Ecco, and Hydrocity is in my opinion a very forgiving water level. I'd place Labyrinth over Hydrocity in terms of difficulty.

..What was so bad about Hydrocity anyways? The crushing wall of doom that takes 1% of the level?

ScrewAttack does this kind of shit to just get views, their constant attacks on Ecco are just getting silly. They clearly know nothing about the game, every clip they always show is like five minutes into the game, max.

Hydrocity is easily one of the BETTER water levels in game history. Maybe it is a bit too hard for a second level, but seriously it is awesome. Most of the level is on land anyways, come on.

But yeah, shitty list. The only really bad one was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles one, and that is arguable. Stuff like a minigame in Kingdom Hearts II should not be relevant, and you never actually even go UNDER the water in Wind Waker, so...

I don't really get the hate for Sonic water levels. Yes, you have to slow down and hunt for bubbles, but the stages are far from impossible and are quite easy if you just pace yourself and stop for a bubble when you see one. I thought Labyrinth Zone was a nice change of pace, and I loved the environment. Tidal Tempest is one of my favorite stages in Sonic CD, due to the clever little switches and use of water in the level. Hyrocity Zone (NOT Hydro City zone as screwattack incorrectly call it) was a fun water level, much more speedy sections and I found that a skilled player can avoid much of the water if they don't fall into it so much. Plus, you have the damn bubble shield! Get one, don't get hurt and you're set. Lost Labyrinth in Sonic 4 was one of my favorite Zones, and the underwater act is a cake walk.

In the 3D games, Aquarium Park has really been the only underwater Sonic stage (Aquatic Mine is Knuckles, bro!) and I loved it. Very forgiving drowning deaths due to the infinite jump and the drill wisp power allowed for speedy movement.

And yeah, the Ecco hate needs to stop on screwattack. Booting up Ecco late at night with an adult beverage is a real experience. The SEGA CD sounds so sexy at night.

I would of thought they would of picked that one water level from Sonic 2. It is so easy to fall into the water (I even glitched a couple times) and I've died many times in the water. -.-

Which one? Chemical Plant or Aquatic Ruin?

I'm actually not a massive fan of water levels, but that list is silly... The water temple in Skies of Arcadia was amazing imo, Fantastic sound track too!

Yeah, it is not like you can die in the water or anything either. In fact, you cannot get into a fight when you are in the water!

Aquatic Ruin. You were only in the water for like 5 seconds in Chemical Plant so it never bothered me.
