Reworked Sega Wiki page on the development studios...

So I have worked on this for a quite a while now...I discovered this japanese wiki page that documents japanese companies internally.

I observed that information with Google Translate, and researched around (such as Sega Retro) and pieced it together.


Previous documentation on Sega's development teams was kind of poor I feel. Nintendo, Atlus, Square Enix have decent lists on the web, while Sega's 2003 era structure stayed officially as corrent for like 9 years (Valykria Chronicles and 7th Dragon being made by SEGA WOW while at the Sega Arcade division being just one type of nonsense). And overall it just gave people the impression, and the old saying that "oh Sammy killed all of Segas internal teams, they dont make any games anymore!"


Glad that Segabits, during the developer year didn't try to stick together games that were made by Sega pre-2000, or post 2004.


Anywho, here are some interresting snippets while researching:


In the old era:


Tetsuya Mizuguchi had his own "Emotion Engine Research and Development" office in 1992...wonder if that was the basis for Rez, Sega Rally, hmmmm...


There was also a "RPG Project Office", with Rieko Kodama in it, presumably it's own department for RPG games, on the Saturn all Sega RPG's were partnerships, perhaps it was a studio for those games...OR Skies of Arcadie was just that long in development.


IC cards for Arcades were introduced by Sega in 1999. That technology was in development since the early 90's.


All the above started around the same time, Yu Suzuki started prototyping Shenmue...it seems all these projects were a long time in the making. And only the IC card idea for Arcades took off.


In the new era:


The "New Business Division" in 2001 was the eventual release for the Mushiking arcade machine in 2003, the very first kids card arcade game. Started of a sub-industry in Japanese arcades.


And for those who say the mobile and PC Online strategy from Sega is only as old as their newest financial report...that is wrong as well.
Mobile studios at both Arcade and Consumer division were established in 2010, as well as an Online R&D Department.


Then recently a new arcade department opened, with their first release being the sand sculpting arcade machine.


I had fun researching and putting this together, so I hope you like reading through it.

That is interesting about Tetsuya Mizuguchi  in 1992. I'll keep it in my notes in case we do a interview with him anytime soon (I sorta wanted to see if he wanted to do one to promote 18, have a few good (and solid) SEGA questions, with stuff about his new game so it won't feel like its all about retro stuff. I noticed some Japanese developers rather talk about the now than the then.)

Well done! Great job, we lacked really a page so accurate and realized so meticulously about the subject.
A very interesting read, with some little gems, pleasant and helpful even for those who already know a good part of the argument.

Nice job. Didn't SEGA Mobile exist for awhile though, under SEGA Of America, post Dreamcast?

This is very interesting and I know I'll enjoy reading through it all. One aspect I noticed, since I'm a big Master System fan, is the section that outlines Compile's SMS games. R-Type isn't listed, whereas Sega Retro has an uncited claim that it was developed by Compile. I love Sega Retro but they tend to have a lot of information that isn't cited and/or is editorial in nature (often referring to home conversions of arcade games as "watered-down," for example). So I was just wondering if anyone has any proof that Compile developed R-Type.

Generally I ignored reprogrammed 3rd party games...

Unfortuanetly I seem to have run into a bit of trouble by veteran wikipedians..ah well. You guys think it is that poor of a layout (huge ass tables)

The tables are slightly confusing in some ways, because they contain multiple dev teams and timelines... maybe you could break them down into smaller tables, one for each development group. I know you've already put a huge amount of work into it. But the veteran Wikipedians are probably taking an interest because this potentially could be a featured page eventually.

I have some mega early inetrviews with Mizuguchi-san and the dept he started work in was SEGA CG dept making concepts and various idea's for SEGA AS-1 Arcade ride and so on  . Also some of the early tech demo's of his Metropolis Arcade ride project was show way back on ITV Bad Influence TV gamming show .

These theme park attractions are interresting. Seems like the creators of arcade hits Sega Rally and the Kids Card games, started at theme park development.

Also interresting that Hisao Oguchi future Sega president and CCO of Sega Sammy, has his roots in medal/coin games, his department also pretty much came up with the card arcade genre.
He was definitly the more "business" and "casino" oriented person than Yu Suzuki of AM2.

It might need to be updated though.
