Uncharted Hands On
« on: June 27, 2011, 11:40:28 am »
Yeah, I am probably a few years late but better late than never.

Naughty Dog is composed of several members of STI/Sonic Team - they have Mark Cerny (SEGA LEGEND) consult on every game. After Sonic disappeared I moved on to Crash Bandicoot who really filled in the void, I played all his games and I look forward to playing them soon (as I have a PS3 now, I can build a kick ass PS1 collection!).

I haven't had the chance yet to enjoy the Jax & Daxter series due to my alliance with the Dreamcast but they are on my too play list.

I had been following Uncharted ever since it came out and played the first 10 minutes years back, and it was destined to be the first PS3 game I would play.

Several years later, I bought a PS3 and now own Uncharted. In 3 sessions I've made it all the way to Chapter six.

The game is excellent, beautiful graphics, the controls are responsive, the voice acting is spot on and something about Nathan Drake reminds me a lot of Crash (I think Sonic Team should try a realistic game as well just for us to have an idea of what a real life Sonic would've been like)...

...and I have to say i'm not enjoying it.

The reason why I am not enjoying the game so much is cause of the over kill nature of the game. Your shooting and your shooting and your shooting the whole new school mechanics of regenerating health and limited range of weapons isn't fun for me either. Secondly why is there no in game map, showing enemies and the way to go.

Am I the only one whose bothered by the fact that Nathan Drake just keeps charting new territories and massacres each and every single inhabitant of the area, sure the designers have created a kill or be killed situation.

The thing that bothers me is that he is (presumably) an american civilian in a foriegn land killing every native in sight.

I play games like Max Payne where your a police officer shooting criminals, or Yakuza where you just beat the people unconscious. This guy on the other hand is a mass murderer.

Am I on the wrong track here?

Or the body count in the game is insanely high bare in mind unlike Resident Evil or Alan Wake the people you are killing are not already dead.

I'm pretty sure he's fighting mercs and soldiers, rather than the natives picking up automatic weapons and shooting at him.

Yeah, it's like MadeManG said. They aren't the indigenous peoples of the area. All the places he's visits don't really have people living there anymore. Anyone you run into are mercenaries hired by the villian to steal the treasure.

That said, the amount of guys you run into in the first game is pretty excessive. Especially in chapter 4 of the first game.
They manage to tone down the endless wave aspect in the second game.

As far as the lack of a map screen, I'd imagine that it's just because the progression through the levels is a pretty guided experience, and you don't really need a map. Not much backtracking at all.

At the very least i'd like a compus.

Hmmm... I don't know, who gave this guy to kill anyone he pleases and whose to say who is the villain. Maybe the line is less blurry in the future right now, but even if they are mercenaries - what is he?

How is he the hero if he is somewhere without the legal authroities permission and killing local pirates.

I don't know, I am to early in the game to formulate an opinion, but the pirates in the first chapter were locals in chapter 3 I believe you had that loan sharks hired goons, but in the African jungle after your shot down appear to be locals.

Let's see right now I don't even know if he is a clear cut good guy, cause he is a little shady after all he did abandon the girl who funded his entire expedition.

I think it's generally one of those kill or be killed things. Like Die Hard, or Dynamite Cop. It's also worth noting that the amount of people he ends up killing is more of a gameplay device than a plot device. It's there to break up the platforming sections, and keep things moving.

Those guys aren't locals though. The temples that you're running through aren't really inhabited anymore or anything.

You actually run into locals in Uncharted 2, and protect them.
He is a shady guy, but that's part of the appeal. Like Indiana Jones and such.

So anyway, I just realised now that Sonic is a genocidal maniac.

You see, we've seen before that Robotnik's robots have exhibited free will and intelligence. Now when Sonic comes into their path, rather than trying to reason with them or even trying to detail and/or reform these beings, he just outright murders them by rending them to pieces. If you look at the amount of times he's done this and the complete and utter lack of remorse he shows to these sentient creatures it's clear he's a murdering monster.

This is compounded by the fact that Sonic has stated himself and has has proven to be 'the fastest things alive'. He could quite easily avoid these robots, in fact it would likely be beneficial to him to do so. Instead he chooses to go out of his way to kill these poor robots.

Also, where the hell is the map in Sonic games? How am I supposed to know that I need to go right on the screen. I mean, there are at LEAST three directions I can move in (the others usually being up, down and left), so how are we supposed to just KNOW that we have to go right? What's worse is, the game encourages this horrible murderous behaviour towards innocent robots, but it doesn't have a radar to tell us where they are!

You are only on the tip of the iceberg Mang.

Even if, for whatever reason, people would like to argue Sonic is freeing the animals, this does not excuse the fact how many of them probably died during the explosion of the Death Egg. How many lives were lost? How many?! All in the name of his sick and deranged thirst of revenge against Robotnik for whatever reason the twisted hedgehog may have...

Nor have I forgotten the fact that Sonic has shown to have very little care about the space time continuum, messing with it not once, not twice but now three times! Infact, he completely wiped out whole timelines just because he believed his version would be better but showing very little care of the people who existed who now never will be. A fate worse than death, since they were never alive to begin with.

Sonic the Hedgehog is video games biggest villain, make no mistake about it my friends. And he needs to be stopped.

Archie established that Dr Ivo Kintobor (Robotnik backwards!!!) used to be a good man who created cures and stuff, but then Sonic caused one of his tests to go horribly wrong, which resulted in Sonic turning blue and fast, but Ivo losing all of his hair, gaining a lot of weight and becoming insane.

And if we cannot believe the good people who created Jughead, the anti-Fonz, who can we trust?

But really, what has Robotnik even done? Make full islands of carnivals, support tiny animals with disabilities by giving them a full protective shell, sometimes let them fly? This dick Sonic comes in, and breaks them, causing them to fall into the lava or something. I will give you that blowing up part of the moon was a bad call on his end, but it really has no effect on the world for 10+ years, so I am not sure why assholes keep bringing it up.

I think that was the Sonic the Comic (Europe) continuity. From what I remember, in Archie Dr Ivo Kintobor was from an alternate universe (Moebius) where Kintobor ran a veterinarian hospital, helping tiny animals, and protecting them from an evil Sonic. There never was the events you described. http://archiesonic.wikia.com/wiki/Archi ... g_Issue_11

The storyline you're talking about, with the test going wrong did appear in the US. That story appeared in Disney Adventures and (I think) a few other magazines, then it was made to be the starting point for the Euro comics.

Edit: Looks like it was also released in the US alongside the release of Sonic the Hedgehog but not by Archie:
