Yeah they definitely were. If you compare both versions back to back you'll see quite impressive things about the sms/ game gear versions. All stages are totally different, some stages "look" totally different and some music are different too. Every floor with the 3 doors, you could actually freely move and pick which order you wanted to complete the stages, while on the genesis it was linear and couldn't move mickey in the level select hub but moved himself from one to the next. I don't think you could pick things up and throw in the genesis version like u could in the sms version. But then again u couldn't throw balls in the sms version. In most of the cases it was simply better on sms for me.

It indeed doesn't get much attention. Just like in that diary video, most of the things are inspired from the genesis game. You can see him throw the balls. I'm fine with it though. While castle of illusion is a classic, surpassing it shouldn't be too hard. From a technical point it looks basic, especially compared to games like sonic, which for some strange reason they have a hard time emulating the physics/gameplay.

Yes which was why i think the SMS was the superior system to the NES especially in its latter years. The thing was although the ILLUSION series and the Sonic games took the same story as their MD counterpart or parts they were in essence different games which is why I never really count those titles as being ports but versions. Also historically what Sega did by giving gamers the same title across three/or four if you count the MCD platforms, is an act that Sony and Nintendo have copied in the last ten years or so.
As for this remake, technically it can be good or whatever but the thing is, i felt that the original game and QUACKSHOT to even ALADDIN were great games because they managed to capture the lighting in a bottle. These games had something that i dont think can be easily replicated. Its like NIGHTS and even the original SONIC series specifically the first SONIC game, that everything came together perfectly and it had that little something that the other games couldn't capture. There's just some things in game production where it all works out that its not easily to replicate. You see this in games like Streetfighter 2, final fight and even Contra 4 that after those titles were made and they try to create a sequel, followup to it they fail to get it like there predecessors because the titles were so perfect.I'm sure the remake will be up to a good quality like the other HD remakes sega has donebut i don't think it will capture the essence of what the original version had.

So this game is out now. Played the first world, it's pretty good so far.

I've played a little bit so far. The graphics and narration are pretty great. I just need to get use to the platforming.
