Funny you should mention it, as I just working on an OFFICIAL top 10 list of the current best Xbox 360 games today. ^__^ Here's what I had so far:

1. Marvel vs. Capcom 2
2. Sonic Unleashed
3. Garou: Mark of the Wolves
4. Pac-Man Championship Edition
5. Bionic Commando: Re-Armed
6. Space Invaders Extreme
7. Rainbow Islands: Towering Adventure!
8. Mega Man 9

I don't know what games should round out this list yet, though I'm thinking it will be between Super Street Fighter IV, Rocket Knight, and Braid. Not sure. ^^'''

Also good are:
-Arkedo games (in the Indie section)
-Bubble Bobble Neo!
-Bust-A-Move Live
-Qix++
-Mega Man 10

Awesome looking upcoming games:
-Dust: An Elysian Tail
-Snoopy Flying Ace
-Neo Geo Battle Coliseum

I'll make posts about PS3 and the Wii later. ^__^

Now, you brought up a good thing.

Retail Games and XBLA/PSN/Wiiware should be separated?

Maybe so, if you want to distinguish them that way. And perhaps have a special section for compilations/other, since Namco Museum Virtual Arcade and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection are two of the best deals you can get, but they don't count as "real" games.

Edit: I forgot to mention VO:OT and Rez HD as being great titles to get. Silly me. Also, Sonic 4 is on the horizon, as well...

I think Downloadable and Retail games should be seperated, mainly because it makes it easier to use the guide if they are.

Anyway, with all the members here we're gonna end up with 'Must Buy' games lists that go on for over a hundred games.  I guarantee Sanus alone will probably list about 50 games (not that it's a bad thing, but he always has huge lists of games he likes).

I'm trying to think of a way to keep the list concise, but it's not easy.

Updated the list a bit, will be adding bits and pieces as people post their opinions and 'debate' why certain games shouldn't be on there.

"12. Resident Evil 5"

Really? Game was pretty average, at best. Boring in my opinion.

I debate 'NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams'. That's more of a "must own" if you are a SEGA fan who must have every SEGA game for a system. As an all-around recommendation list, NiGHTS 2 should not be included. 'House of the Dead Overkill', however.... ;)

Journey of Screams does not belong in any list. I will make a proper list of my personal recomendations when I have the time.

If we're talking must-haves, then Metroid Prime 3 on Wii needs a mention, or, even better if you can get it, the MP Trilogy edition. The controls are the best i've ever come across in an FPS and an ideal showcase for the Wii's motion sensing. Its pretty much the only game I play on the thing.

There are a lot of games I absolutely love that I will not put on this list (Lost Odyssey is a good example!) because I am only going to add games I think everyone should own if they have the platform.

Xbox 360 games-

Retail:

Halo 3
Bayonetta
Virtua Fighter 5
Bioshock
Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

Xbox Live Arcade:

Shadow Complex
Duke Nukem 3D
Banjo-Kazooie
Garou: Mark of the Wolves (even with it's shitty netplay)
Bionic Commando ReArmed
Virtual-On: Oratorio Tangram

Wii games-

The House of the Dead Overkill
Ghost Squad

I want to say Twilight Princess, but I just cannot... I CANNOT!

There are probably some other games I could mention, but I cannot think of anything at the moment.

As for accessories... On the 360 there is a nice bundle of the chatpad, headset, a year of Gold and a game all for like 70 USD, bad news is the game is PGR4.

Also instead of just adding everything we mention, you should wait till like three people enter in the same game before posting it, otherwise we will just have every game on the platforms on the list!

I have far too many games to list, so I'll put a few for Wii, as that has the most clear-cut 'Must Own' games for it.
* Madworld
* No More Heroes
* The House of the Dead: Overkill
* Resident Evil 4
* De Blob

As for the Messenger Kit for Xbox360, I never saw much stock in that thing, if you want to type fast messages just use Xbox.com to type and send them on your PC/Laptop. Then again that's not practical for everyone I guess. Second controller is obviously a must-have for any console though.
