Yeah Nintendo has had celebrities advertise their products before. This is very different from any of their past advertisements though. This particular celebrity is an otaku magnet. If Nintendo ever had any intention of appealing to the expanded audience they created they would of never created an ad like this. The expanded audience sees Otaku culture as shameful. Especially the older generations. One of Japan's political figures has even commented on how Japan culture is headed in a horrible direction. I mean. I guess I can see why older people think such, Japan in their life time used to be very different. Now it's super colorful and energetic, and lots of anime. Probably makes them so angry! Damn kids, ruining Japan! Probably similar to how people in the US think allowing gay marriage is destroying the country.
I mean just look at the ad. Nintendo is blatantly targeting Otaku. I don't see anything wrong with that though. Otaku and gamers are big overlapping demographics in Japan.
Otaku is a good audience, just ask Sony! Sony rolling in Otaku money, they love the Vita.
here is an example of an old DS commercial appealing to older generations

Pretty much, yeah. That's okay though! Greatness Awaits.
