Being well made and having impact does not make a game good just by itself. As we both know

I would tend to disagree . If looks at the likes of Daytona USA CCE onthe Saturn - It's not a patch on the classic Daytona USA game most of the magic is lost , but its a well made game just not for everybody or even fans of the original. I feel very much the same for Daytona USA 2 on the Arcades too .

Now Street Fighter II totally transformed Vs Fighter for ever and had a huge impact on the gaming scene. SF III is an amazing sequel with some of the best combo and counter systems ever seen in a fighter and a game that was so deep and brutal to the player that it sadly put many off, very much like VO II - It was a game for the true diehard gamer and like VO II a game so deep it will take years to master and even after years of playing the game, you'll discover new tricks and ways to play the game .

Its most prob why to this day its still used in some fighting game tournaments. Sure SF IV was a step backwards and basically  SF II done in 3D, but Capcom had too , so the more casual game player could get back into the series . That said for me VF 5 was a step back to that of VF 4 Evo, but I'll hardly call VF 5 a sh8t game .

Except it's not even close to SF2. All they did was include most of the roster.

sh8t game .

And all the old moves, controls  and combo's . I think there's a very good reason why SF IV got rave reviews

Crackdude: Can I ask which 2D fighters you do like? SNK Fan? I can kind of agree on that one. Even this gen KoFXIII >>>>>>>>SFIV.
I was really into KOF when I was a kid. I still think they are THE best. Of course, I'm pretty shit at them and can't fully appreciate their depth, but SNK fighters are by far my favorites.

On the face of it, it looks as if it's similar, but the games are so hugely different. The addition of EX moves, Ultras, Focus Attacks, things like input shortcuts and changes to move properties changed the game so much.

It plays massively different to SF2, it's night and day unless you play at a very casual level where throwing a fireball is considered 'impressive' (no offense by that, some people don't play fighters and would see the games as very similar).

SFIV was superficial enough of a return to "form" that it looked amazing from a distance. All SF's are different beasts, but basically the first SFIII entry came out I think sometime around SF Alpha 3 and it was a game different enough from Alpha/SF2 that it alienated people on a casual level. Mostly new characters (this is important because Alpha series had new characters but still a bunch of familiar styles/char), choose a super/length of meter, EX move in 2nd Impact, parry, etc. Coincidentally around this time fighting games started to lose popularity according to Yoshinori Ono so people didn't focus on them as much in the mainstream.

Plus SFIV had more casual friendly things, like character reactions to Ultras on their faces, some cartoonish Ultras (Akuma Ultra 2?), Ultra system on top of Super meter where you will by default have access to an Ultra art if you are hit enough (base damage for half-filled ultra is 100%, full ultra is 150%). Focus attack, I don't know what to think tbh. Casual players probably either abuse or don't use it even if it only absorb on hit. SFIV does have some kinda hardcore stuff like one frame links though

To say nothing of whether all this was good or bad. It was just a strategic overture to corralling a lost audience

If you could play SF II or any of its spin off's, you could play SF IV and do ok . SF IV went back to SF II really and even brought back a lot of the classic characters and I think it was reflected in the sales - A game that did much better than SF III be that in the Arcades or the home. To me because it was far easier to get it too, where as SF III (even for SF veterans) was a real die hard game and had a massive steep learning curve.

Genocide CUTTAH, but with a ZOMBIE CHARLIE.

Interesting character, I don't like the frankenstien thing, but at least it's original-ish. I hate that CINEMATIC supers are back, but whatever, I didn't plan to get into this game anyway.

Maybe I'm just imagining it but the first reveal trailer had more muted colours.

Seems like they changed the colour schemes to make it look even more like SF4.

They did lighten up the colours i believe. Someone had a comparison of Chunners between the trailers, she looks better in the new one IMO.

Yeah looks fine, tho not  much nicer than the last one and I wasn't even impressed with 4 (graphically).

yes, its slow but this is aimed at a mainstream crowd. I noticed this trend now: Make fighting games slower. I think one of the main complaints with Smash players is that Melee is faster (and amoung other things) than the newest entries.

Eh?

Really? Street Fighter games have had a pretty good balance with them aiming at both more casual players and pro tournament players lately, with them focusing a lot on balancing the game with Street Fighter IV expansions/patches.
