Yeah, Microsoft is really that big. I mean has Microsoft ever face a big problem before like Nintendo and Sony?
Donkey Kong arcade success saved Nintendo back then. It's the last resort for them in game industry. If Donkey Kong arcade game failed, it would have likely caused Nintendo's American branch to collapse and pushed big old Nintendo into severe financial crisis.
Also thankfully Bluray won the Bluray vs HD DVD format war. Sony would have faced severe financial losses and deep corporate crisis if Blu-ray had lost the format war to HD DVD.
Microsoft? Everything is like a walk in the park to them.
Exactly! Maybe if it was more of a matter of "Sony Entertainment" and "Microsoft Gaming (now known as XBox)" as a rivalry sure, but again I don't think it matters that much because they are subsidiaries of corporations that pretty much major digital service industries.
Throughout the '90s, Sega and Nintendo had one of the most famous rivalries out there. they were the Coca-Cola and Pepsi of the video game industry. Even during the Saturn-Dreamcast era when
Dogma PlayStation became more of a concern to Sega than Nintendo, there were still people comparing Sega Saturn to N64 or Dreamcast to GameCube.
Thing is though, Donkey Kong saved Nintendo from bankruptcy and Bluray saved Sony from bankruptcy... but the Dreamcast could not save Sega from bankruptcy. Sega were "saved" by Sammy Holdings but not without consequence. Nintendo practically became the Disney of the video game industry while Sega was consumed and excreted as a subsidiary to Sammy Holdings, who only rebranded themselves as SegaSammy to save face to the Japanese consumers.
I'm not the only veteran fan who wants to see Sega return to be on par with Nintendo again, and Sega themselves claims they are "half-way there" to achieve that. It's just... I don't see how they can achieve that at all. Or the very least in my lifetime.
But i believe that, if Sega could manage their classic IPs as well as Nintendo can, that would somewhat help.
