1993 Phantasy Star IV Developer Interview

I think the innovation of the Phantasy Star games has mainly been in terms of graphics and visual presentation.
However, when you consider that RPGs evolved from table-top gaming, and that characters exist as something in the players’ imaginations, then the perspective that you shouldn’t display too much overtly is also correct.
For my part, though, I think the main draw of video games is their overt use of sound and visuals, and that’s what we have pursued in the Phantasy Star series.

Sega Releases New Trailer for Phantasy Star Online 2 Senran Kagura Crossover

The video showcases avatars wearing a range of clothing, some of which looks very casual by Earth, 2020 standards.
It also depicts emotes, combat encounters, and in-game models of things that are, according to a cursory google search, referred to as oppai mousepads.

Hiroki Hamasaki (Director) About Phantasy Star Online 2 Cloud for Switch :

"There’s actually been a lot of downloads. However, not many are actually playing from there in the present situation.

And then  Satoshi Sakai (series producer) added :

"The Switch itself doesn’t have an email address and you can’t accept the email,
so we’ll make it so that you can use a smartphone or PC to accept the Sega ID registration.
I think things like are part of setting a threshold.
We plan to make adjustments so that you’ll get to play right away without making an ID."

Also he mentioned that Phantasy Star Online 2 is one of the main online RPGs in Japan,
and it is still one of Sega Games’ top level profit-earners.

Sega’s Video Game Business Holds Strong Among Bleak Overall Financial Results

Repeat sales (of games released in the previous quarters) were strong, especially outside of Japan. The performance of new free to play titles was also solid.
Sega expects the strong performance of its video game business to continue for the rest of the fiscal year, including both repeat sales and the free-to-play segment.
