Are they still getting a high number of sold copies over Nintendo? I'm sorry, the answer is still no.
If you ever read that Sonic games has more units sold and downloaded than Mario, it's because they counted free games like Sonic Dash, Sonic Rumble, and Sonic Forces Mobile.
For paid games that's released every year, Mario is still unbeatable.
SEGA might (sometimes) beat other third party game companies like Capcom, Bandai Namco, or Activision.
But still far if it's compared to Nintendo or Sony.
But Nintendo games are usually strictly sold on Switch consoles. Wouldn't the fact Sega games are usually multi-platform to give them the edge?

That's the theory but the fact is not like that ... Nintendo first party games in Switch/Wii/3DS/NDS really sold that much, beating the sales of other multi platform games.
For example just take a look at Top 10 Best-Selling Racing Games of All Time

1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (70 million)
2. Mario Kart Wii (37 million)
3. Mario Kart DS (23 million)
4. Mario Kart 7 (19 million)
5. Need for Speed: Most Wanted (16 million)
6. Need for Speed: Underground (15 million)
7. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (14.89 million)
8. Gran Turismo 4 (11.75 million)
9. Need for Speed: Underground 2 (11 million)
10. Gran Turismo 5 (10 million)

Nintendo dominated the top 4. Also only 3 games of 10 were multi platforms (Need for Speed series) since Mario Kart and Gran Turismo were exclusive to Nintendo / Playstation consoles.

The console where the game's released was also a factor.
The top 4 were released on Nintendo's best selling consoles/handhelds (Switch, Wii, NDS, 3DS).
The irony is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch was a remake of Mario Kart 8 for Wii U which doesn't even make it into the Top 10.
Being released on the Switch does make a difference, a lot.

Also I don't know whether it's a factor or not: most of Nintendo fans never pirate their games.
Gamers who wanted to try Nintendo games might, but not the die-hard Nintendo fans.
That's why they're always welcoming Nintendo classic catalogue back to their newest consoles.

Sheeeeeeit. So it's not just Sega, it's the fact Nintendo are pretty much the Disney of the video game industry and have a firm domination of it.

I never compared them before, but I guess what you said is true.
Nintendo is somehow becoming the giant's that's hard to catch up like Disney.
Even Shigeru Miyamoto said that he wanted Mario as famous as Mickey:
"There was a time when Mario was compared with Mickey Mouse.
And at the time, I thought that Mickey Mouse was 40 years older than Mario, so he had no chance.
But Mickey Mouse has evolved through the evolution of animation and, in that same sense, we have the idea that Mario then is going to evolve through a digital medium.
With every new technology and hardware that we put out, there's a Mario game created that was part of that evolutionary process."

Fan-Made 'Star Fox CD' Adds The Hornet From Daytona USA, Because Why Not

Quote
RealSunlitSpace's Star Fox CD is one of the most interesting upcoming adaptations of Nintendo's space combat classic, and adds in CD-quality music via MSU-1 chip support, as well as other neat additions to augment and enhance the experience.
The developer has now revealed that the game will also contain some fun little bonuses, with the most interesting being the addition of the iconic Hornet race car from Sega's Daytona USA.
The car replaces the Landmaster tank and is ...

SEGA did beat Nintendo ... in the arcade.
Nintendo even turned to SEGA when they wanted to make F-Zero, Luigi's Mansion, and Pokemon arcade games.

Yeah, but not like Nintendo tried to take the arcade scene.

Yeah, but not like Nintendo tried to take the arcade scene.

They did at first, especially after the success of Donkey Kong.

But after Famicom/NES were proven more succesful, they switched their focus to home console gaming.

Oh yeah... forgot Donkey Kong and Mario games before Super Mario were for arcades.

Guess Sega won in that regard.

Yeah. They couldn't recreate the success of first DK in both sequels (DK Jr. and DK3) in arcade but still at least they tried before leaving arcade business.
